Some of you may have been following my stripped 2nd gear transmission saga (http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=602108) . Well, here is the update; I took it to a non-dealership transmission place and they confirmed that both 2nd gears (the gear itself and its match) were completely stripped of all their teeth. BUT, they can't simply buy just the new gears; appearently the design is obsolete and the new design gears can only be bought as a package with the gears and gear shafts. The whole deal costs $570 in parts. That puts my tranny repair at $1200. It smells kinda fishy to me, can anyone confirm this story?
I suppose I could always hope the re-design is stronger?

Huh?
If I remember I'll have my parts manager verify/or debunk that for you tommorow.
Or meybe N.U or SubieGal can chime in (they work parts, I'm service)

I'd really appreciate that. I can't see why Subaru would not sell the gears separately; they did it for my 5th gear. This sounds like a scheme for either the dealership to make money off the transmission place (they can't order direct from Subaru) or for them to make money off me.

second gear (one of the pair) is part of the main shaft, so you have to get that, and the matching gear. $570 sounds just a LITTLE high. Also ask if theyre including synchros and seals etc, but it may be about right...
But about it being "obsolete" bah...

Just buy a used transmission and drop that in. Then, send your busted box to Rallispec, and when you get it back, sell the other transmission. It will be more expensive, but you will get a fairly indestructable transmission out of the deal!
