Thoughts on this?

I have a FP Green with a STG4 setup, stock block and motor but will definately upgrade to a built 2.5 with better heads and cams later on. Right now I am running an ECUtek reflash for injector scaling with the UTEC. Is it worth it to change that for a Hydra?

Also, with the Hydra, since it is MAP and you get rid of the MAS, is there any advantages of me running the Perrin BigMAF? What will I use for an intake of I make the switch?

I switched because of the transition delay the utec has. However, much to my surprise, the element hydra is even better than stock ever was from a drivability standpoint. I think you'd benefit greatly with a standalone system.

As far as the big maf, you wont get any benefit from it if you switch, you still need the maf sensor to measure air temps, but it doesnt use the sensor to regulate fuel like the utec does. You can use whatever intake you like with the element hydra, doesnt make a difference.

I personally will be switching from the STi UTEC to the Hydra ECM. However, I will still be keeping the STi UTEC as it allows me to retain OBDII for the sniffer testing (Ma. emissions) so I will swap around ECM's twice a year.

Nonetheless, on to the topic at hand. I feel as though the Hydra has alot more to offer than anything else out currently, hence the reason I will be purchasing it. Big Turkey I too have a similar setup as you, from reading various posts. It would be a wise idea to call Phil and speak with him to get you more familiar with the setup. One aspect I like most about the Hydra ECM is that is it MAP based which seems to allow an infinite amount of possibilities over a MAF based setup.

As for the MAF sensor, it is now used for the following:
Air intake temperature: This uses your factory MAF sensor for temperature ranges and allows you to globally adjust the fuel and ignition maps to compensate for 16 ranges of air intake temperatures. The benefit is to add extra fuel or adjust timing for when the car is running in a wide rage of temperature conditions due to seasonal changes or desert weatherThat is verbatim from Element Tuning's website.

I switched and i'm very happy. I don't have it completely tuned yet and its already better. I love the partial throttle full boost with the bov venting and no bucking like a maf controlled ECU. If you have experienced that before with the utec you understand how annoying it can be. No more lean after shifting or back firing. Some people liked the back firing but I thought is embarrassing. One of the main reasons I upgraded was because I didn't want my AFR to fluctuate with temp changes. I would be pissed when I had the AFR tuned just the way I wanted it. Then a few hours later it would be totally different. I also wanted to be able to use the AVCS.

If you have the means, a full standalone is awesome. Even on the "not terribly impressive" base maps, my AEM is running smoother than stock.

If you convert to speed-density (MAP) tuning, you can remove the MAF or just ignore it completely. ANY intake will work, but you also have the option of having one made or modifying yours to suit your needs without any of the MAF worries.
