I've got a TBE and EM already and I'm looking to do a turbo swap this winter (with supporting fuel mods). I really need help deciding on the turbo though. I'm not looking for either a drag strip monster or an autocross king - just a very fast, very fun car to drive with more go than stock. I've tried searching and I think I've narrowed the list to this:

Either the 18g or 20g from deadbolt. What are the pros/cons of the TD05 vs. TD06 housings? Reminder, I will not be running race gas so I don't need a turbo that can hit 25psi.

OR a PE1818 or PE1820. How do these compare in size to the Deadbolt turbos? I think a PE1820 is comprable to an 18g, but I don't know (if I did, I wouldn't be here asking).

I'm trying to maximize my power output without sacrificing spool up unnecessarily on too big of a turbo that requires race gas to really run well. Anyone's suggestions or opinions are welcomed. Thanks.

P.S. This is for a USDM 2.5L STi - there are a lot of general turbo threads where people talk spool up and xxpsi but I have no idea if they are talking about a 2.0L or a 2.5L

While I'd like to see the answers too, try PMing Deadbolt. They seem to always respond, at least in the Vendor Classfieds section in the ad for their turbos. Post what you find here, however you get it.

PE1820f, 18G, 20G, SR40. not in any particular order. these turbos would be well in efficiency range on pump.

Any thoughts on the possiblity of spending a little extra for some Water / Alcohol Injection? It may be a really good way to help lessen worries of det or knock while getting good performance out of your upgrade.

I am thinking maybe you should look in the direction of a GT32 twin scroll setup if you would prefer something without too much lag. But I am far from a performance expert so other can gladly chime in and tell me if that is stupid.

I posted the question to Deadbolt in their "turbos" thread. I'll post their response here for anyone else who's looking for the same info.

Thanks for the WI and GT32 ideas. I'll look into them, especially WI. I could always sell my current downpipe if I buy the GT32 kit I guess. Replacing the header and all may be more work than I want to get into though.

Green

The FP Green is too big. Why sacrifice all that spool up time when you then can't push the turbo to it's limit because you're using 93 octane.. doesn't make sense.

Agreed to an extent. And I think I am going to go with a Green personally. But at the same time if he goes with WI then he can still push pretty hard on a Green. It just doesn't sound like the exact turbo for jlp7t. Although there is a lot of talk about the Green being fairly linear in its increase of power. There are just so many good options out there at the moment that it will be hard to decide until more people have really found the limits of tuning on the ej257 with different turbos.

Here is Jerry at Deadbolt's response as promised:

"Thanks for your interest! Some general information regarding the makeup of the turbos, the TD05 or TD06 part refers to the turbine wheel(some people call it exhaust wheel) the 18G, 20G, etc. of course refers to the compressor wheel.

The TD06-20G seems to be a very good match for the STi, producing quick spool for a turbo of its size, (best report of 20PSI at 3800 RPM) and can also support well over 350WHP on an STi with appropriate tuning and supporting mods.

The PE1818 will spool quite fast, but since it uses the IHI #18 turbine housing it will be limited on the total power output.

The PE1820 uses the larger #20 housing however it will not deliver quite as much punch as the TD06-20G up top, but spoolup will be similar.

Feel free to email us at deadboltenterprises@charter.net if we can be of any further assistance.
