View Full Version : mounting driving lights behind the upper grill?
PJBEV5 09-02-2004, 12:20 PM I am going to buy some small PIAA driving lamps (I haven't figured out which ones yet) and I want to mount them behind the grill on either side of the emblem.
Has anyone ever done this? Pics?
How hard is it? It looks like there's enough space, but the issue seems to be what to mount them to.
Thanks for your help, and any pictures would be helpful!
ydant 09-02-2004, 01:20 PM Mounting them there would be like mounting the supertones (horns). You can either use the center column, the side columns, or mount from the top bar. There are plenty of places, but you'll probably have to drill holes in the metal...
jharl 09-03-2004, 12:11 AM I've done it in my legacy.

So I don't know if it will help you much. I just researched sizes of the driving lights and figured out what I could fit in there. The hardest part was just figuring out how to mount them. I designed some brackets and had someone make them up for me.

I used small PIAAs as well, but through the grill, not behind it. :)

There is only about 3 inches clearance between the top grille and the radiator.
The only PIAA light I know of that fit that gap is the 002X, which uses 35W H3 bulbs. They are not useful as driving lamps imho.
Here is a pic & an old thread from when I mounted it through the grille side piece. It can be mounted between the top grille & radiator using brackets secured to the top grille. I replaced them with optilux fog projectors, which serves as a better fog light than the oems imho.

Which lights are those in your grill? I was thinking about doing it that way too.
Although, I kind of like the stealth look of behind the grill.

I ended up getting the Optilux 2020 they have both a driving and a fog light in them. I also bought a set of PIAA Ion Yellow bulbs for the fog lights in them. Now all I need to do is install them......they will fit behind the grill, but I'm going to have to fabricate some sort of mounting bracket!?
Any suggestions on the material to get for the bracket?
It has to be something strong enough and thick enough that the lights don't shake, but also pliable enough that I can bend it so that I can screw it into the radiator support and still have the light be in the right place. I was thinking aluminium? Where would I get it? Home Depot?

Home Depot is a good starting point.
I wouldn't start with aluminum, except perhaps for the L-bracket. A reasonably tough material but workable enough (i.e. you can bend, drill, or cut with tin snips) is the galvanized steel used in the Simpson's Strong Ties line. Afaik, those are intended to join wood columns, and should be near the lumber section. I've used them for various brackets in the past. You can fold them into L or U shaped beams for improved rigidity.
Psydotek 09-16-2004, 03:57 PM Yeah, i got my stuff at home depot, afew metal beams that were about 3 feet long and about 1" wide (i think) that i just cut, bent, drilled, and bolted together to make this:

They were tucked away so it took me a while to find, but they were in the same aisle with shelf brackets/braces and screws/bolts.
Rice Boi 09-17-2004, 03:30 AM Just an idea:
I'm planning on doing this my self. Since I have a single beam HID kit on my WRX, I'm planning on putting some running lights behind the mesh grill of my Liberal grill and putting the smoked tint over the lens so they don't seem aparent there.
I personally don't think it's attractive on the WRX to have lights in the grill area but would be a very sufficient area for brights. Which is why I would want to smoke them black.
PJBEV5 09-17-2004, 08:51 AM I like that idea.....maybe I'll try tinting too. However, wouldn't that dim the lights?
I'm going to Home Depot this weekend to look for the 3' by "1 galvanized steel for the brackets.

Depending on the duration and wattage of the aux light, there may be an issue with the tint material melting due to heat from the bulbs. Aux lights that can fit behind the grille would probably have a very narrow distance between the bulb and the lens, so there is probably a higher heat concentration than, say, oem headlights. On the PIAA 002Xs, I initially installed 3M clear protection sheet, only to find mild burn marks on the sides. Now that they are behind the mesh, they no longer have the 3M on them.
In any case, you may want to see first how it looks not tinted. It may not be completely unnoticable from the outside, but it may be enough. Here's an example, PIAA 002X, not tinted, behind grille mesh:
