View Full Version : Thought I had a problem with axles but it's not that

Ok, I thought my axles were bad. Changed them out and still have the same exact problem! Here's what happens.

When the car warms up and I make any kind of turn below 20 I get this horrible clicking noise comming from my front. I can also feel it in the wheel. It's just not barely feeling in the wheel, it's actually pretty violent. It doesn't do it at all when it's cold. Also during the winter after driving around on it for a while and make a turn there is no noise so it's only during the summer. Anything above 20 mph it doesn't make this noise. I thought maybe it could be a wheel bearing but it does it when I turn it both ways and same in reverse. It started doing it at the same time to either side. Also it doesn't make any kind of noise when I'm driving in a strait line, only when turned. I've had this problem for the last year and a half or so, I figured if it was a wheel bearing then it would have seezed by now.

Does anyone have anykind of clue what this could be? I don't have the money at all to start replacing stuff. When I fix it, it has to be what's wong with it or I will not be able to affored to fix it. There isn't anything that seems to be out of place or missing. Someone please help!!! If anyone has any questions please ask, I want to be as descriptive as possible.

Wow. That sounds like a though one to me....

Only slow(under 20) corners, huh? Does "turn" mean anything with the wheel off center or just with a significant steering input?

My first guess would be an axle or bearing..... I dunno.

Springs could be binding. Have you ever had the struts off the car? I accidentally flipped the washer on the top hats over and the bearings would never spin. The springs would coil up and then violently spin over when the force was too great.

Have someone watch the springs as you turn the wheel from lock to lock. That would tell you.

if your sitting in a parking lot and turn the wheel side to side, do you feel it?

could be a binding differential. That could get exnpensive.

Or it could be your front end link. I kinda had this and then put in dif endlinks and it went away.

Hmm...I put on my lowering springs when I got my car in 01'. The last time they have been out would problably be when I crased it 2 years ago. So the shop it was at most likely took them out. I haven't personally taken them out since I put them in. I will check that out.

McDade, no it doesn't make any noise unless my car is rolling. Like I said, on a regular hot day it'll take a 10-15 min. drive after sitting all night before it'll do it when I turn. Say I went out at 7 am and drove for a half hour it would do it. Then I decide to go home and I don't drive for a while (say or more hours) it'll have to warm up again before it does it.

Thanks for all the help so far guys, it's reallly just pissing me off that I can't figure out what's going on with it because I'm pretty handy with cars. Before everyone was saying it was my axles and that made complete sense to me. I really don't think it's the wheel bearing because it's not a constant noise while driving and I think it would have seezed a long time ago if it was. Keep the idea's comming please. If I'm not being clear about something ask and I'll try to describe better.

Thanks

I wonder if they put the cone washers on backwards, or didn't put them on at all when they put the struts in. have you jacked up the car and shaken things around with your hands to see if anything's loose.

I didn't really do that. When I took off the axles I disconnected the strut from the brake and put it back on, seemed fine. In the next few days maybe I'll just take out the front struts and reinstall them, and check my endlinks. I have looked at it though to see if it was the axles or anything missing and it seemed fine. Maybe I'll jack up my friends too and see what looks the same and what doesn't. :(

The cone washers were what I was talking about, btw.

Directly under the struts tops.

That's kinda what I thought you ment, just wanted to make sure we were on the same page.

Keep the thoughts comming if you have them. I hope it's just an install mistake and not something I'll have to pay for.

When you take the struts out....if you do......see if the strut tops spin freely in circles. If they don't.....cone washers..
