I was running Sunoco 93oct, and it was on a DynoJet(magic dyno)
As far as running that boost on pump gas on a stock motor, I think its ok.. I have run near that boost on a stock 2.0 for over a year with no problems. Car had over 30k on it when it was parted out. Thats all I will say about it though...

It took a good few hours to dial it in right and extract every ounce of power but the car is smooth as glass and an animal.
I am actually afraid of it a little right now.

bgbyztoy 09-12-2004, 08:05 PM people dont understand that the evo came with a bigger turbo with a smaller displacement.. not like our cars it came with a small turbo.. even my pe1820 is small.. dont want to sound cocky but i've ran an evo with intake, dp, cat delete, exhaust, injectors, fuel pump, ecu reflashed, hks cams and alittle more boost.. we ran 60 till 145mph and i pulled 1 1/2 car.. he was a cocky guy saying he can beat any sti.. but after we ran i shut him up.. he ran a 12.4@112 at etown anyways ;)

I have been building and driving, 87-93 mustangs since I am 16yrs old (I had 11 of them personally) I went to the track with a friend that bought my last car I put together, he couldnt get the car to go faster then 12.10 in the 1/4, my 1st pass in the car with a street drag radial was 10.85,
the STI's and WRX's are very hard to get to go consistantly in my opinion, where I think the evos are easier to drive in a staright line and be more consistant.
Give me any 2 identically equipped cars and 99 times out of 100 I can beat the other driver quarter mile wise at least.

Junior is one of the best tuners for utec on the whole east coast, and a good friend of mine. I wouldnt trust anyone else.

what headers are you running and have you heat wrapped them or jet-hot coated them? any increase in lag?

I've drag raced my whole life and in driving the car its an 11.50 ish car all day long.
I just finished my 1 st full tank of 94 octane too and I got 18mpg. Not too shabby!!! :banana:

Why not ?? 400whp is 400whp.. and should be a 120+mph car .... My friends EVO that made 450whp trapped 124mph and from a roll ran just like a 124 car, even makes more from the 1/8th the the 1/4 then my car
I'm running 15psi on pump gas which is like 365whp.... shouldn't be much to worry about...

Thats plain ignorant for someone especially with a 4cyl with short gearing.
My mustang is in about 3500 peices right now but if your friends with the honda or vw want to run for big money we have my friends "street car" that will run him. Mustang (small bolck, 10 inch tire, how fast could it be right :huh: )

My car with a VF22 made 29 more ftlbs, just by adding the GTspec header and uppipe. And it spooled 200 rpm faster.
I swear by them.

do you recommend wrapping (well maybe against cracking since you said spool was same with or without) them / coating (for spool or cracking)?

I noticed an improvement in spool up from datalogs from repairing a lot of damaged wrap and wrapping the uppipe, turbo and downpipe. Subjectively, in lower gears it did not have as much lag the first few times on the throttle, and I also thought that the power did not "fatigue" as much on a cross country blast at relatively low speed (under 80 mph in twisties) where I was either cornering as quick as I could or always braking or accelerating.

I'm running 15psi on pump gas which is like 365whp.... shouldn't be much to worry about...
400whp dynojet is not 400whp dyno dynamics. Just for reference, with the green on my 2.5, I ran 11.9@118mph, running a tune that was right around the 380-400whp 'Mustang' mark. ( I made 427 on the smaller 20G, but that was with C16 ).
Keep in mind I'm not a pro drag racer, and that was with a nearly 1.9 60' time. I did three 11.9s that day at two different drag strips all with the same 118ish trap speed.
If you have a real 400+whp, you should be in that range, perhaps a few mph more if the temps are cool.
As for your stock STI motor, it will not last. You will have some broken ring landings shortly. Those stock cast STI pistons don't like high boost for lots of time. You should consider a quick weekend piston swap.

A couple of people have PM'd me to ask how much work it is to do said 'weekend swap'. Here is a quick outline of the procedure, along with the costs.
Step 1: Pull motor.
This is not as hard as it sounds. Pull off intake and exhaust stuff, disconnect main wire harness in engine bay, disconnect fuel lines, drain coolent and remove radiator, pull out transmission release bearing pin, undo 6 tranny to engine bolts (2 nuts actually). Undo lower two engine mount bolts. Take out front O2 so you dont smash it. Hook up chain. Lift motor out.
Step 2: Remove heads.
Once engine is on the ground, remove the clutch and flywheel, intake manifold and exhaust manifold. Remove valve covers. Remove plastic timing belt covers. Remove pully bolts (the hardest part.. see below). Remove timing belt and pully. Remove tensioner. Undo cam cap bolts and remove cams. Undo head bolts and slide heads off.
Step 3: Remove old pistons.
Open up the 4 access holes to get to the wrist pins. Move the motor around so you can get to each pin, one at a time. Remove locks and slide pins out.. then push pistons out.
Step 4: Replace with new pistons and rings.
Compress rings on pistons, and use ring holder to slide pistons in. make sure not to forget locks on inside of pistons. Put wrist pins back in, along with outside locks. Reinstall covers to pin holes.
Step 5: Install Heads
Using new head gaskets, reinstall heads, torque correctly, reinstall cams and caps. put on cam sprockets. put in tensioner. Install new timing belt. Put covers back on.
Step 6: Resinstall.
Put the exhaust and intake manifold back on. Lift back in car. Reverse all of Step 1, fuel, coolent, oil, etc.
Cost:
Your time
Head Gaskets ($50)
Pistons and Rings ($600)
Can be done in one day is you are quick and have a few helpers.
Tools you need:
Engine lift and stand
Standard metric stuff (10,12,14,17,19)
strong (1/2 not 3/8) 10mm hex socket
14mm hex socket
12 point 14mm 1/2 socket
6 point 14mm 1/2 socket
12 point 12mm 1/2 socket
impact screwdriver

Why is that? Cast pistons just dont break... I mean sure if you pump alot(30+psi) they will push the lands down and cause them to break. 22-24 psi pump gas on a safe tune... will last you. DETONATION breaks the pistons not boost.

22psi does not yield 400+whp on pump gas. The issue is the amount of advance and boost needed to get over 400whp in a configuration like this. 24+psi plus enough advance to get this power will break the motor, eventually. I fully understand the issues of detonation causing the eventual piston failure.
Let's just say that many of the 400whp+ tunes posted here are pushed far enough to be well into the silent but deadly detonation range.
As for 22-24 psi on a safe tune lasting, it depends on your definition of lasting, as well as how you drive the car. A stock motor driven hard at >24psi on a green will have problems, but you might get a year into it before problems appear.
Everyone is free to take advice as they see fit, and replace motors as they see fit. There is no absolute line to cross.... but my experience, and the experience of many other tuners is that at the very high hp levels (>400whp for these 2.5Ls), there are some significant stock limitations.
(not even addresssing the out of balance cranks, scratched in the bearing services from Subaru, etc).

I think this is were the "reliable" "safe" terms get thrown off. 99% on the time when you are going for a big HP goal, you anticipate building the motor sooner or later. Most of the guys are happy if they get away with it for a 1 year, non expect much more... Its like any HI output motor, big or small you set the goal for a true reliable (wont void warranty ect) or you set your goal high and know thatit wont last forever.. Even race motors running "24"psi on pump gas have to be freshned up after a while...problem is everyone hasa diffrent opinion of how long a "while" is.

Very true. A quick search of my post history can see how I feel. I kept my 2.5 block stock as a measure of testing. My motor rarly if ever experienced any serious detonation. It was tuned almost every day I drove it, and was a working test platform for PDXTuning. It actually never once saw pump gas.. always pump + Toluene (20%), or race gas. It did however have a number of drag runs, track runs, autocrosses, and that pesky drive to work.
Like many others, I knew the block would not last. I was most interested to see where it failed. It failed in a small way, and was still pounding out 450 mustang dyno whp when I took it out. However inspection of the pistons shows all 4 were looking stressed.. 2 were already cracked, and one was discolored and starting to crack.
The drop in vacuum pressure, which seemed to be realted to the cracks, occurred after a few weeks of very high boost (27-28psi). I don't remember a single knock event during that timeframe.... but I was running 104 unleaded a lot then as well.
My speculation about other motor problems is not just from my car, but from other cars as well. A good number of green turbo'd cars that have pushed to 400whp have suffered the same fate. In the same light, one might suspect that Ron from Axis, Quirt from Crawford, and many others have chosed to swap the pistons out first for a reason.
One other thing to consider is that ALOT of people tune their cars on the dyno to high HP numbers on race gas, but don't drive it that way on the street. While expensive to drive around town on race gas, I wanted to see what the motor can really take, so I ran my 27-28psi everyday.... and that make taking people for rides that much more enjoyable.. ;)
Anyways, I'm going to get a nice sleeved built block and make some good power, as I'm getting tired of taking my engine out! ;)

Sorry but a timeslip is a product of ALOT of different factors, with power only being one of them. For instance I am fairly sure an EVO will run a good bit lower ET for the same HP. Something about better gear ratios than the STi and a bit less wieght. But too many here would assume that the STi is making less power.

Just remeber that with my crappppppy driving I got a car with about 30 less hp and a bad clutch to go 12.5@116mph with a 2.2 60ft.... On pump gas... when Carls car cuts his 1.6XX 60fts... and add in the 1?? MPH traps it runs the numbers.... that all :cool:
As for the lotus..... Wait til someone makes mid 300s on one... That toyota block and the yamaho head... Can we say 2000lb 350hp 9000rpm rev mid engine monster... with gears to match...
Just look at what a 400hp NSX will run on pump gas.... 10.50s@128-130mph.. and 1.5 60fts on 17" BFGs.

I went 11.50 @ 121mph...pulling timing in 4th gear.. went 101.53mph to the 1/8th... been 124.49 ... so in other words... with 410whp in a 3200lb car... you ran 128-129mph traps since that would be "way faster" then 124mph... and Quicker would make you running 11.1's .... which i find hard to beleive..
Also which track did you supposedly run at ???
Next... your 3 years older then me... soo woohoo you have tons more drag racing experience... which i doubt.... have you made 1000 1/4 mile passes ???
Finally you keep saying I didn't take your race... you didn't take the races i offered.... so not sure how you figure i punked out...

I get crazy because thats happen to me 4239857489754 times where people ask to race or whatnot and in order to intimidate me they throw out a crazy number knowing I wont put it up...that all.
