View Full Version : Higher-Performance Legacy Survey
SUBE555 09-13-2004, 04:42 PM Alright everyone, since we have seen a number of threads noting peoples’ desire for a Legacy STi model in the near future, it would be very interesting to see exactly what people think it should be made of, what are it’s key points, how you value it, and so on, particularly for Subaru of America to see.
The results will be tabulated and both posted here AND sent to Subaru of America.
Please take a little time to respond to this survey (it took me less than 5 minutes to fill out with some thought), it's really shorter than it looks. The easiest way is to quote the post and delete the information that does not pertain to your thoughts. For numbers #1-3 however, please pick one or the other, if you were to decide a model today, which one would you ultimately take. Beyond the first 3, you can mark as many as you feel as pertinent. Additional comments can be added after you finish the survey.
Please keep it as clean as Impreza development thread was. Surveys and additional input only please. :)
Thank you for your time in advance.

#8 Have you driven a new Legacy GT?

(Why *else* am I buying an STi??)
#4 I would prefer:
2)A performance package that could address most of the STi model areas
(By selecting this, I’m assuming it’s a fully-developed and manufacturer-approved package, with full dealership support and manufacturer warranty, sold in turn-key format like many other auto companies offer or have offered in the past—such as SLP’s partnership with GM to make performance F-bodies, or Toyota/Scion’s TRD etc.).

If you answered '2', continue at #6. Do not answer both.
Once you complete # 6, please continue #7 and fill in the demographic data at the end.
-----
#6A What would be your reason for choosing an option package over a full model?
You may answer with as many from this question as you like
1)Less visual to an STi model
2)Should cost less, but get the job done just about as well, better bang for buck
3)I don't need everything an STi model may come with (such as GT versus GT Limited packaging)
4)Possibly lower insurance
5)Other (Please specify):
--All of the above. Plus, it should be easier for SOA to implement the changes at port, or at certified dealerships (like Mazda’s “MazdaSpeed” authorized dealerships) than try to deal with US Import regulations for a “new model”. Here, the product could be sold like Honda/Acura or Toyota/Scion sell their performance packages—at the dealership and installed on an available car they have, or at port for a car coming in their allocation.
PLUS,
#6) This idea of a cross-platform, or multi-platform customizable STi kit/package would *solve* the debate over sedan/wagon and why we can’t have both, it would solve the “I want a Forester STi” demand, the Impreza WRX Wagon STi demand, and the (if there is any) Subaru 7-seat X-over/SUV STi demand.
A STi *package* gives the best to everyone: it lets the customers get what they want, with full support; it lets the dealership sell the cars as there is demand instead of have their lots fill with unwanted STis; it lets SOA offer performance products similar to those offered overseas, but without the hassle of regulating those products for sale here in the US.
In addition, SOA could enlist the help/support of other aftermarket tuners (COBB, ProDrive, etc) in offering their approved/authorized performance packages through the dealership—again reducing the cost to Subaru itself by removing it from the development/R&D aspects of building a Legacy STi for the US market.
Also, the “kit” could actually be various kits with different level of modification offered, from the mild to the serious—all selected by the consumer. If Dell can make its fortune on customizable PCs, Subaru could do the same with the STi brand.
#6B What parts would you feel should be changed from stock?
1)Tires
2)Wheels
3)Brakes
4)Suspension
5)Drivetrain (Transmission/Differentials)
6)Engine Performance
7)Exterior
8)Interior
--All of the above, possibly with different “stages” available within each (as SLP offered 3 suspension stages for their in-house SS Camaro, or as COBB offers in their aftermarket performance upgrade kits).
#6C What would you expect from engine performance enhancements?
3)ECU Upgrade + Sports Cat + Axle-Back (Netting perhaps 15-25chp)
--this would be the minimum level.
4)ECU Upgrade + Full Turbo Back (Including Sports Cat) + STi Up-Pipe (Netting power figures similar to WRX STi) (Similar to Prodrive PP)
--mid level.
5)It should have a new Turbo, Intercooler & the whole 9 yards pushing power beyond the WRX STi
--“Mommy, can I *please* have this?” level.
#6D Should there be any changes to the stock drivetrain?
4)Yes, throw in the entire STi drivetrain
--6MT, DCCD, etc, is a must.
#6E Does it matter which brakes I get?
1)No, plain-jane looking brakes are fine as long as they work very well
--For cost, they need not be Brembos, but they should be upgraded ventilated/cross-drilled, stainless steel lines, etc.
#6F What would you rather see for tires if you had an option?
2)Performance all-season's like Pirelli PZero Nero M&S, Toyo Proxes 4's, Falken Ziex ZE512
3)Summer-only tires like Bridgestone Potenza RE050, Potenza S-03, Toyo T1-S, etc
4)Competition-type like Bridgestone RE070 (on STi), Pirelli PZero Corsa
--All three as options, but NO WAY should RE92s be on the list.
#6G Your percieved value of such a package:
3)$3-4k
--Stage 1
4)$4-5k
--Stage 2
5)$5-6k
--Stage 3

samagon 09-17-2004, 02:51 PM sorry for not following the format, but here is my take:
based on the different magazines reviews and compairisons, the main thing to address would be the things included, and not adding an STi to the lineup. with the WRX sti a standard was set that the car would be a no holds barred performer. people that want the legacy (and would be able to afford the ~$34k pricetag that would likely come with a higher end model) want luxury appointments, not a stiffer suspension and less interior.
so, yes: more power; yes: better handling; 17" wheels standard; 18" option. that is where the 'STi' would end.
it needs to be leather, have satelite nav, and at the least HID. 5spd auto with manual shift capability should be included.
I know this probably belongs in a different thread, but if another STi model is to be added to the line, it should probably be a wrx wagon sti, and not a legacy sti. I say this because the legacy is supposed to be moving luxury, where the wrx is supposed to be the performance car, and to me sti says performance over luxury.
