Depending on the year of your 2.5RS, many of the CAI's you can purchase will utilitze your stock airbox, and they will recommend a drop in filter. This allows the tubining to fit IN the fender. A RAM intake like the Injen removes your stock box and places the filter NEAR the fender. It's not fun to try and fit a filter in the fender of an Impreza, IMHO.
I have a Ganzflow intake, very pleased. Many others also have Cobb, and sing praises there as well. IMO, a CAI has a sound closer to what you are looking for.
If your paying near $300 for your intake, think again. Mine was about $160, and that included an Amsoil drop in filter.

if you want sound, just take off the intake snorkel(all of the plastic tubes that are attached to the box).
at WOT it'll give a real nice WHOOPing sound.

Simply removing the snorkus does give the sound your looking for (in fact it's where pretty much all the sound comes from in an intake upgrade), but the problem is, without adding any piping, your intake opening lies directly above your engine and your sucking in HOT air.
Do the mod proper, and at least fit a pipe to the front of the car or the fender. Because hot air is teh crap for power :D

For sound and cost, go with the pdm. Same as the Ganz for 50 bucks. Then get a K&N - I even have a used one I'd sell you, lol.
