I was about halfway through the the article "300 Horsepower Snowmobile" in the new Subaru Performance mag thinking, what an awesome car, I wonder who the lucky sob is? A quick check back reveals it's non other than Nabisco's Glenn Wallace. Great article Glenn.

Will you be returning this year? I know it's WTLY that you participated but it's still fun to read about it in print and to see the pictures. Do you have anymore photos?

I was born and grew up in Quesnel and most of my cousins and uncles and raced (and still do) for years at the Gold Pan Raceway. Lot's of winter driving opportunities in Quesnel, eh? I really can't imagine anything more fun than ripping that fast in the snow and ice.

Thanks!

The rally runs ever 2 years, and alternates winter/summer, except this year they did a bonus summer event.

So, the next summer event is 2006 (http://www.alcan5000.com), next winter event is 2008 (by my calcs).

So I haven't seen the print copy yet, nor the layout/artwork!!

Was the DCCD sidebar helpful? (I didn't write it, just gave them some comments). Did they print the prep sidebar?

The Next Best Thing (some would say better) is the Thunderbird Rally in BC. (http://www.rallybc.com/html/tsd_events.html)

There is also a companion article coming in the next issue of Drive, although it has more of a focus on the remote northern wilderness than the rally itself. It has more photos, but mostly of Subies in the Great White North.

I thought it was cool to do two articles that relate to each other but have a different slant on the event. Neither is a straightforward account of the rally, as most of the other articles have been (it seemed redundant to re-tell it, and after all we didn't win either!)

This is the first article I've ever had in print, so it is a big personal milestone for me. It was great of Subaru to sponsor such a great team, a great banquet at the end of the rally, and then also to let me write about it in their magazines.

Ironically my wife, kids and I are featured in a local Saab dealer color ad this month in a couple of magazines. Must be the month for Wallaces being in print. Hey, Saab is part of the GM/Subaru family now, really, it is ok.... :)

Glenn, driver of the 300 HP snowmobile. :)

The layout/artwork is great.
There's a big photo of your car in action on the title page and four more smaller ones in the article. The prep sidebar is there too. ( lot's of great info.)
The dccd section is more like a separate two page spread with a cool "body-off" photo showing the components used by dccd. I haven't read the dccd deal yet, but that's next. I always end up with two copies of Drive/Performance and I'm not sure why I would get mine before you as I'm over in Yakima (where it's getting close to LM-22 time again, Yahoo).
Thanks for the thunderbird link

I've only seen http://www.driveperformancesubaru.com which is the subscription link.

I know the 2nd article will definitely be on the web at http://www.drive.subaru.com when it comes out.

Thanks again for the kind comments; there was a lot of information to fit into 700 words (I think my first draft was 1300!)

Glenn

PS my copies just arrived. Cool!

A few of us from the "Subaru Crew" at Edmunds.com got written up in this issue of DRIVE too.

http://www.drive.subaru.com/Fall04_SubaruDifference.htm

Besides yours truly, there's mention of Patti Mickel from SOA (and Edmunds), juice (AJ), as well as a screen shot showing posts from Colin, Tom and Patti. Besides that, Ed (lark) has a letter and pic in the "Letters" section. Everyone mentioned also participate here at nasioc in various forums.

Thanks!!!! Can't wait for the print copy.

Err, I just noticed an editing glitch.... and this is my fault (not Subaru's) because I did read the final copy and didn't catch the change in the language.

There's a missing sentence in the 2nd last paragraph that makes it look like we won the rally. Well actually it says that. We didn't. It should have said:
When we arrived back in Inuvik, we met the local Inuit shaman at the gas station. He proclaimed solemnly that we would win. He proved to be right in a way that we didn’t expect. We all experienced something very rare: the adventure of a lifetime, the remoteness and grandeur of the remote north and the closeness of good friends on a long journey.

Satch will be yelling at me.

I must be up to 18 minutes of fame now...

Does Patti work in customer service? (the 800 #/email etc?)

If so I think she drove with me on the road test portion of the WRX Ride-n-Drive.

Yes she does. She's a customer service training leader at SOA's Cherry Hill headquarters. She's blonde, mid/late 40s, I would guess.

She's a great lady, and was responsible for getting AJ and myself invited to the Detroit Show debut of the new Legacy, as well as the ride-&-drive this past May at Las Vegas. She's also been very helpful in resolving problems with Subie owners over at Edmunds.com.

In addition, we've (the Edmunds Subaru Crew) passed many suggestions to her on how to improve future Subies, in which she's passed on to their product planning department. In fact there's a thread on Edmunds dedicated to "Suggestions for Subaru," in which she monitors regularly. About a year before the current generation Forester debuted here, she asked the "Crew" for suggestions on what we would like to see in the next Forester. A few months before the new Forester debuted we found out from her that eight items we had recommended were incorporated into the new car. So it's very nice to have a connection within SOA who cares as much about the product as we all do.
