I will probally fly into steamboat or fly near by " benifits of being a pilot" The rally isnt hard to miss.................. The cars will be lined up at steamboat around 7:30 in the morning on sat...... should start at around 8...... At the park expose you can find out where the stages are and the spectator spots... I know the service area is just outside steamboat in a small town....... Everyone at steamboat will know about this race and whats happening.

i realize it wont be hard to miss but i have no idea where the rally actually is. is there alot of "go here but dont go here" type directions or is everything pretty laid back? will there be huge crowds and a lot of cars to deal with? i know how much smoother things go when you go to a big event with people that know how to get around. they know the good places to park and spectate and all that other stuff that will make the trip easier/more enjoyable.

From what I hear (I've never been to this rally) you can only spectate in certain places specified beforehand so there really isn't a "good spot" since there is only one or two per stage.

If you haven't already you should check out their website, http://www.coloradocogrally.com , for more info. They have a ton of info including road closures which I would assume is the stage map basically. You can find the county roads using mapquest to get a better idea of location of the stages.

How come you aren't driving this year...or are you? I really want to try my hand at rallying at some point. I just need the money. :D

When are you getting into Steamboat? I am up for meeting up at some point during the weekend.

I am not driving this year becuase my sponsor punked me........ We had a signed contract and they broke it....... after rim of the world they didnt send me a check .... so no cog :( Its an awsome race though! THis is a prorally dont expect too many spectators .............. They never advertise the events and nobody knows about them.......Some powerful cars will be there ........autosport engineering has a monster sti and so does doug havir. I should get there early sat.......... pm me for my cell we can meet up and you can chill with us. ITs pretty laid back you can ask anyone for spectator areas. The spectator spots were pretty good last year.

Alot of the stages are on private property ........ If u make a deal with the owners you can watch anywhere you want.

I have been to the web site but its super slow and the maps dont show what im looking for. i looked at the schedule but what does this mean:
Saturday 9/25/2004 1:00 PM FCO, MTC #3 @ 12:47pm

is that the start of a stage? is there anyway to know where this stage is before i get to the rally? i want to know where im going before i even show up in steamboat.

Thats co driver/ team info ........... MTC - main time control ..... FCO? --- uhhh co driver knows that  I never pay attention to this ....

anyway the rally starts at 8am sat ...... be there before that about 730 for the park expose aka car show .............. you can pick up a spectator packet .... which will tell you everything you need to know......... They wont tell you in advance --- they dont want competitors to know where the stages are.

There is a pdf file that shows road closures and times but does that mean that is where the stages are? The pdf is on the right side of the screen on the home page.

Yea thats correct........... When I raced it last year .......... off major roadways it took a couple miles to get to the start of the stage.... All the stages are near by.... I am going to dig up my topgraphic maps from my aviation class............. try and find these roads

mike270
09-20-2004, 03:51 PM
Using mapquest most of the roads look like they are quite a ways west of Steamboat. Some seem closer to Craig then to Steamboat, but I am not sure if I am even looking at the right roads or not for sure.

ummmm .............. I dont think I will be able to fly out there  So I am going to have to drive.............. does anyone want to share a hotel room? Slit the costs? That means I will be getting there friday

mike270
09-21-2004, 12:43 AM
I am thinking about camping out actually. There is a KOA in Craig that isn't too far away. I haven't decided though. A hotel is still an option but it depends on cost.

WRXMaster
09-21-2004, 01:38 AM
I will bring a sleeping bag ............... single bed room is like 45 dollars

mike270
09-21-2004, 01:41 AM
You planning on going to a campground then or just sleeping in the back of the car?

WRXMaster
09-21-2004, 02:02 AM
Hotel room............... thats how we do it in rally ........... Pile as many people into the hotel room as possible......... Plus everyone is going to be at the main bar at steamboat and its 2 minutes from the hotel

Being so close to the action ........seeing them on transits :) ....... I was lucky to go to rally mexico  WRC events are just awsome! THe partys............. the wrc cars running all over the streets :)

Cog was cool.
Great weather, even a rainbow at the Parc Expose.
Cars were fast, really fast. Why? Because the gravel roads are like highways and half of them are downhill.:) I even got my rental car up over 70 on one.
The Autosport Engineering car was my pick for best of show and I like the way that Pat Richard drove. He almost rolled on the SSS.
Crowds were awesome, too. Not crowded, but plenty of hardcore fans. I really wish that I knew who all of the drivers, co-drivers, crew, etc were. I was standing right next to some pretty important people, I think. One of them was for sure. I overheard Pere Gladysz (Mopar co-driver) talking about the 6.1L Hemi program.

I saw some other things that I really liked. Pat Richard signing autographs for some kids. Natalie Richard almost seemed more impressive than Pat. She must be super brave to ride with Pat. I think that she was the one that spoke up at the Parc Expose when they announced that Stage 2 was cancelled.

Graham Wilcock(?) of Autosport Engineering was another person that really impressed me. I didn't get to talk to to him very much, but I figured out early that I just need to shut up before anything else stupid comes out of my mouth. He's smart. I noticed that his Autosport Engineering car paid more attention to getting the weight LOW in the car.

***I noticed that Graham was looking at Shepherd's Group5 SRT-4.***

Cog had more than the usual Mitsus and Subarus, which was nice. Several VWs and DSMs were there. There wasn't anything really odd, however.

There were older rally-bred cars, like a Celica GT4 and Mazda GTX. That made me wonder about next year's rally cars. Most manufacturers don't have AWD cars in the lineup, but ALL have FWD cars. Some even offer turbo FWD cars. That sounds like Group5 material. I hope they all notice how well the SRT-4 performs with (only) 2WD.
Maybe that would draw more carmakers into rallying and make Group5 hot. In turn road going FWD cars would get hotter.

Cog was alot of fun! Sucks that alot of the pro guys skiped running cog

Cog was a blast. I should have my pics up tomorrow sometime and I will post a link to them here.

It was good to meet you Chris. My phone battery died on the way back to Denver while I was talking to you. I wasn't able to get it charged again until Monday and had to go back to classes. I wish I would have remembered to bring my car charger. Your knowledge of the event from last year made me a lot less confused about where to go and what was worth watching and taught me a lot about how the rallies are run. :D Nice find on the end of stage 9 too. It was fun to watch without a lot of other spectators. Maybe this time next year I will be a participant in the rally instead of only a spectator. Good luck with everything next year Chris. Let me know when you find something out.

EDIT: Let me know if you need a codriver  ;)

Ok...pics are up.

Let me know what you guys think of them. They were taken with a simple point and shoot digi cam. I think the pics at the bottom of the list came out the best IMO. I like taking photos as a hobby and I am thinking about getting a nice digital SLR so any criticism or hints/tips would be appreciated. :)

Finally got the video to work. I am a little slow.

I wish we could get superspecial's like that. Jumbotrons, real grand stands, etc. Hopefully one day it will come true.

Good video too. I just wish there were rally videos that didn't have all the car sounds cut out. That is half the fun of watching rally is listening to the cars as they go by.

I have alot of rally videos ---- if you want some more  I wish our championship could use wrc cars  Lovel drove a wrc car here in the US for a couple races-- he destroyed all the open class cars.... so they baned wrc cars from the us

I am always looking for more rally vids. :D

When did Lovell drive the WRC car? Was it part of the SRTUSA team or something else. I know the SRTUSA cars were very close to WRC spec but a little down on power right?
