Unabomber 09-19-2004, 02:04 PM PWR, Griffen, Fluidyne, SMC all make radiators. A radiator is a radiator pretty much. You will see zero temp drop unless you replace the thermostat. XT6Wagon 09-19-2004, 03:50 PM I agree there is definitely no reason to upgrade until you are running stupid HP in the middle of the AZ/Nevada desert. Under normal conditions, I'd agree. But if you're looking to replace the radiator then you've probably got track (road course) days in mind in the summer. If you're going to do that a lot, I'd think a upgraded radiator would be a good idea. Even with the stock thermostat you get greater cooling capacity (most aftermarket radiators hold more), so your chance of having temps remain much over the thermostat opening point are less. Most of them have a larger cooling area as well. I'd say if you see any elevated temps in your track days it would be smart to consider it. On a hot (upper 80), late May day at Second Creek in Denver this year a lot of cars were experiencing cooling problems--many of them stock. The altitude (~5000 feet) and dry air don't aid in cooling and the track is notorious for being rough on cooling and brakes. I noticed the temp gauge on my STi moved just a hair above where it normally is (always) so I took a cool down lap and pulled over for a few minutes (after about 20 full-on minutes). A stock M3 pulled up at about the same time. His temp guage was buried in the red. TRS XT6Wagon 09-19-2004, 05:21 PM Todd, when my car was around 300WHP I did a rallyX on the stock tires. So basicly I spent 4 minutes at 6K rpm at speeds from walking pace to maybe 30 MPH. The temp needle did not move. From what I've seen that is about as abusive as you can get on the cooling system since you are running high RPM almost all the time and no airflow over the radiator other than the cooling fans. Track days have the advantage of higher speeds to remove any temp rise in the lower speed sections. coil222 09-19-2004, 05:40 PM I'm running a PWR on my 05 Sti that I bought from an 03 WRX owner. Crucial thermo, Cusco cap and Perrin hoses. Install was pretty easy and the PWR fits very closely to stock. |
