View Full Version : Toubles hardwiring my iPod
I've searched around through quite a few threads and haven't come up with much. What I'm trying to do is connect my iPod directly to my Pioneer HU. I have that Griffin iTrip thing and, in my case, it's doesn't work for beans. Also, I don't have a casette player, so that style adapter won't work either.
Last week I took my HU out and, unfortunately, it appears that I only have outputs on the back of it. For example, coming from the back of my HU there is a pair of "front" red/white female plugs, a pair of "rear" red/white female plugs, a mic plug, and a hands free plug (I think) all of which "dangle" from the HU. Then there is a pair of red/white female plugs that are "integrated" into the back of my HU. I tried connecting the iPod to the integrated female plugs and can just barely make out the music. Again, I guess everything coming from the back of my HU is outputs, not inputs.
So, what if any, are my options? In one of the threads I thought I saw something about hooking into the mic output, would that work? I don't have the money to replace my HU, so that Alpine unit is out of the question. And I saw some sort of Denison Ice Link (I think that's what it's called) in another thread, would that work too?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And please pardon my ignorance, I haven't the first clue when it comes to car audio stuff - I installed the HU myself (including the wiring harness and whatnot), but that's about as much as I know. I don't have aftermarket components, subs, amps, tweeters, or anything like that, just the HU and an otherwise stock audio system.
Gixxer 09-20-2004, 03:53 PM Can your HU control a CD changer? If so, you can probably get an adapter that will turn this manufacturer-specific input into a standard set of RCAs. Might be available directly from Pioneer or check with BlitzSafe...
AFAIK, my HU can control a changer. I'll look deeper into that possibility. Thank you very much for the idea/seuggestion.
P.S. Is your username "Gixxer" a reference to the nickname for the GSX-R motorcycles?
Diane 09-20-2004, 04:44 PM Just to elaborate on what gixxer said you just get the RCA adapter that plugs into your cd changer outlet for you pioneer deck and then you have to get the y cable (if thats what its called?) that plugs into the RCA and your ipod. This goes for most decks just get the adapter. Also if you want to spend a liitle more money do a search on the internet i beleive a few companys are soming out with interfaces that will be compatible with your deck, if you want the intergation. I just foget the name of it soundgate or something i'll post when i find it. I myself am going with the alpine interface.
BlkTS02 09-20-2004, 04:54 PM IIRC Pioneer has a aux input adapter which will allow you to connect your ipod.
Diane, thank you for your elaboration. The cable I have right now has red/white male plugs on one end and a headphone jack/plug on the other (to plug into the headphone jack on the iPod, obviously). So are you saying that I will need not only need the cable I currently have, but an adapter that has, on one end, a male connector that will plug into my changer control input, as well as red/white female plugs on the other end?
Or, an adapter that has a male plug that will go into my changer control input and red/white female plugs on the other end.
My apologies for a complete lack of understanding (or is it just stupidity?) in this field.
Gixxer 09-20-2004, 06:30 PM P.S. Is your username "Gixxer" a reference to the nickname for the GSX-R motorcycles?
Yes. I own a 2001 Suzuki GSX-R750. It doesn't see much steet use anymore but typically sees 300-700 racetrack miles a month
So are you saying that I will need not only need the cable I currently have, but an adapter that has, on one end, a male connector that will plug into my changer control input, as well as red/white female plugs on the other end?
That's correct.
daphunkie12 09-20-2004, 06:51 PM go to http://www.densionusa.com/x/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=375&Itemid=79 or buy an alpine head unit they have an ipod adaptor coming out this month. you use the hu control for and it displays everything on the head unit. go to alpines website they have it there. that is what im going to do.
Gixxer - Glad to hear your bike sees the track - competitive or recreational? (The more time I spend on the track, the less I enjoy riding on the street.) Everything I've read about the new 750s says they're just a great bike. Apparently one just set a new track record at Nelson Ledges with Larry Denning at the helm.
Thanks for the clarification as to the connector I'll need for the changer control input. I'll see what Radio Shack has here in the next day or two.
daphunk - The Alpine unit does seem really slick. But I'd like to avoid the cost of a new HU as well as the unit just to play my iPod. If I can get away with buying a $5 connector while making use of my exisiting HU, it's all the better.
That Ice Link unit seems to be pretty neat as well. Am I correct in assuming that it plugs into the HU's changer control input (based off of the quote below)?
ice>Link takes the place of your external CD Changer and it operates like one.
Davenow 09-20-2004, 10:14 PM Did you get it wet? I hear they arent waterproof.
draggy 09-21-2004, 12:31 AM IIRC Pioneer has a aux input adapter which will allow you to connect your ipod.
This is what pioneer has to offer:
if you want to keep an input for a cd changer: http://pioneerelectronics.com/pna/product/detail/0,,2076_4109_32762,00.html
or if you don't intend on installing a changer:

They basically convert Pioneer's IP Bus connector to RCA. So assuming you have an IP Bus compatible deck this will work for you. A quick search for it and i found it for sale at car domain and ebay.
Dave - Assuming you're talking about the iPod, no, I haven't gotten it wet yet.
Draggy (and BlkTS) - Thank you very much for those links. Honestly, though, I have no idea if my HU is IP Bus compatible. I'd have to doubt it (it's a solid four years old). I'll yank the deck tomorrow or the next day and see what I can find.
I have a pioneer deck that is that old and it is IP-bus compatible. I think it is a deh-p2000. It is old and a low end model so I would think that your deck has it. I'm sure you could find the specs if you dig on pioneers website.
Okay, here's the HU I have: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/product/detail/0,,2076_4039_37556,00.html
It would appear as though I apparently do not have an IP-bus compatible deck (but I still haven't taken the HU out again to look).
So, is my only option to hook into the changer control? Sounds like it would be cheaper that way anyway.
draggy 09-21-2004, 11:47 PM It actually is available according to the "specifications" tab on the product page; also if you open up the install manual the diagram points out the IP Bus jack location on the back of the unit.
02R6, just re-read your post and to clarify, the IP Bus port on the Pioneer decks is what Pioneer changers plug into. The devices I posted about earlier allow you to use that port and convert it to RCA jacks to allow an additional device such as the ipod to plug into.
draggy - I'm a moron. You're right, obviously it does have an IP Bus port. I just went ahead and ordered the device posted in your second link. Thanks a lot for your help.
draggy 09-22-2004, 11:44 AM no problem...glad i can help
Got that IP Bus converter today; the iPod works like a charm playing though my HU and factory speakers - no more lugging around cases of CDs.
Thanks again for everybodys help and for dealing with my stupidity.
