View Full Version : 2.2 Borla Headers - Rattle LOUD = bad.
cjfike 09-21-2004, 01:00 AM I bought these headers from a fellow enthusist here at this site.
Bolt up real neatly. New gaskets on flanges and after 'Y'.
I start the engine, and when it catches the headers >CLANK<. Then it just stops at around 600 RPM. Sure did wake me up though. I haven't heard a clank like that since the clutch fragmented in my '70 cuda.
There are several RPM ranges it just rattles. RATTLES. No leaks that I can find.
Are Borla Headers <= Goose Poop?
Anyone used Fiber gaskets with these? Anyone know where to get fiber gaskets to try?
todnar 09-21-2004, 09:22 AM Don't know of the clank you speak of.I had them on my 2.2 and the headers made the cats rattle(metallic noise).Got much worse when I installed a Hi-Flow Cat.Ended up taking the headers off because it was so annoying.

cjfike 09-21-2004, 10:01 AM I don't know if it is the flanges and the studs, or the movement of the engines on the initial moment it starts. But there is a clank when it starts.
Yes, these babies are headed for the for sale cheap aisle.
Nicklbrso 09-21-2004, 11:15 AM I had the same thing happen on my old L with the Borlas that todnar is speaking of. At certain RPM's you would hear this metallic rattle noise. It must have been the cat.
todnar 09-21-2004, 12:03 PM When I put the stock manifold back on with the Hi-Flow Cat the metallic noise went away.
Right now I'm running stock manifold,Cobb's Hi-Flow cat and a Cobb cat-back.
Now the drone is annoying, which there wasn't one with the Borla and Cobb's stuff.
That metallic noise is just plain wrong but that's the way it is.
Slack 09-21-2004, 01:06 PM I have the headers for my L and they make the rattling noise. The welds at the collector keep cracking and leaking. I am sick of my car sounding like crap and I'll be replacing them with some stock headers if I can find any.

Jejunum 09-21-2004, 01:37 PM you think it could be a piece of the heat shield rattling. when i put my borlas on i bent the crap outta one of the heat shields on the cat (near the junction of the headers and cat) and it rattled until i bent it down.
cjfike 09-21-2004, 02:21 PM When the engine is idling, the front cat oscillates (up or down) about 1 ~ 3 cm.
@1000 rpm the oscillation stops till about 1700 rpm and it comes back but not as dramatically.
Since the front CAT design takes the exhaust and redirects towards the rear of the car (basically a 90 degree turn), it must have something to do with the rigidity or lack of rigidity between the stock manifold pipe and the header.
I don't know. It is coming off as soon as it is cool to the touch.
DreddRS25 09-21-2004, 04:30 PM I bought some borlas back about 2-3months ago from a fellow Leg GT owner. The headers bolted right up and fit well. However when coasting or engine braking I hear a metal *tack* sound, not quite a clank but still a metal slapping sound. It also rattles something down there when I fire it up. I reached under there and held onto one of the heatshields and the rattle went away. Though the metal *tack* sound I believe is coming from the connection of the header/cat. It is pretty annoying, but I feel as though it should be easy to rid of rather than swapping out the headers.
cjfike 09-21-2004, 11:42 PM Maybe since they are a different design, and I think on yours more pipes are involved it just isn't as severe.
1 to 3 CM oscillation is going to cause future issues such as metal fatigue. If I welded a brace from the cross member to the cat and manufactured some kind spring suspension it may reduce the oscillation to an acceptable level.
However, when I called Borla they did not really have anything to say but these are meant for off road use. Unfortunately I did not (and do not) see that in their ads.
Thank you for your offering!
