What's the ratio on the WRX and STi? I think i read somewhere that revlabs had 2 steering racks with faster ratios, one faster than the STi, and the other that was much much faster... Which one is the 12.5:1? :)

[oh yeah and :furious: for me not having $$$ for this right now...] ;)

Don't quote me on this I think subi114 will chime in here but i think the WRX is 16:1 and the STi is like 15:1

$1600 for everything minus the AP. We got one catted downpipe in yesterday but that's part of a turboback. Apparently another one has just been shipped, so we should see it by the end of the week.

I've read that the WRX is either 16:1 or 16.5:1 in a couple of places. The STi is 15:1 and these racks are 12.5:1. Revlab has a quicker rack that is 11.5:1 but that's for race/rally use only.

Damn you Aerosim, damn you!

Mwaaa haaa haaa ...

Give me a call tomorrow afternoon. Your motor is all buttoned up (STi cams are in, found the oil leak, etc.) but I need to get a bung welded into the headers for the EGT sensor.

Oh yeah ... while I'm cleaning up and selling things ... there's a C&R WRX radiator here. Brand new, includes fans and overflow tank for $650. Local pick-up only because the box is missing in action.

Thanks.

Subi114
09-28-2004, 08:50 PM
yes all the steering racks are the same... The WRX is at 16:1 the STi is 15:1 and the STi spec-c is 13:1 rev labs steering rack will be 12.5:1 That's a damn good deal if it includes the steering rack bushings with alignment... I might just have to chime in on this deal when I get my coilovers... So it will include alignment right steve or is that extra? I wonder if corner balancing will be included. But yeah man I'll be by tomorrow after class steve I haven't been there to bug you in a while... Yup, as far as I can tell, the racks are all the same. There are apparently some revisions to the '05 STi rack internals as far as ratio, but not the design of the rack.

Thanks for answering, Chris. No corner balancing cause there's really no way to corner balance unless you have coilovers, but an alignment is included.

Yes, we are. We're trying to keep at least one or two in stock so we don't have to deal with the lengthy turn-around time. Anyway, they're going to be making them for a while and we'll be carrying them as long as they make them.

How hard are these racks to install? Any special tools needed, etc.?

Pretty easy as long as you're careful. The rack has to be centered (as well as the steering wheel). No special tools, either ... but you will need an alignment. The rack comes without the arms, but has new locking washers. So, you have to remove the arms (complete with tie rod ends) from your rack and fit them on the new one.

I don't have any customers who have bought one for their STi's yet, but this was a quote from one of my customer's friends.

> I'm anxious to see how your steering is better then the
> '04's. Nothing touches my RevLab quick ratio steering rack.
> If you come by CA Speedway this weekend ... you should try my

So far all of the racks have been purchased out of state, but I do have one local customer who has ordered one. I'll make sure to have him post his impressions here.

We finally installed a rack on a local car and it's amazing. The only shortcoming is that the power steering pump is a little short on volume so it makes some noise at parking lot speeds when turning. Other than that, nothing short of "Why didn't Subaru do this from the beginning".

We should have more racks within a week or two, but we're currently out.

Cool.

What does the noise sound like and how loud'ish is it? Would my wife think my car was broken or hate my car any more? :) Any worries about the steering pump dying an early death because of this?

Did you get to try it at highway speeds and beyond? Was it too twitchy at 100+ MPH or was it still very steady and comfortable?

It sounds kind of like a loose power steering belt. Only at parking lot speeds though ... once you rev it a little, it goes away. I don't think the pump will die early, but I'm pretty sure that the Spec C pump is higher volume than stock.

I got it up to 80mph or so on local streets ... not twitchy at all. Just all over nice. The owner was going to do Buttonwillow (I think) yesterday so I'll ask him what he thought about it on the drive up, etc.

for the 05 steering racks they are different in design as in the 04... So only 05 racks will work with 05... but all the other racks will work with each other. the sti racks are the same ratio as before but the design is different that's why it feels like it's more responsive. Just wanted to clarify that to you guys. So for all you guys that are wanting to get your 05 racks changed out there will be some down time... We will have to send YOUR rack out to be rebuild. But if you have an 02-04 wrx we can do them now. we have a few more coming in.

11-29-2004, 12:31 AM
Yeah, I'm sure that we'll have the same deal going for a while. As far as the noise, I haven't heard from the owner, but I actually think that the noise was from some air that was stuck in the system. We had an STi with a power steering system that just didn't want to bleed and it was making the same noise. It may just be that the STi's are a little more finicky about bleeding out the air because I've never had this problem with a WRX. Anyway, I'll see if I can get the owner of the other car to comment.

All I gotta say is
WooooHooooo !!!!
http://subaru-wrx-sti.com/web/QRack.jpg
The QRack is just plain awesome !!! - highly recommend it !
Steve & Chris and Westend did an awesome job
I had them install the QR and some TEIN RA's on a Wednesday a couple of weeks ago, then aligned & corner balanced by Darren on Thursday and track testing on Friday at the Redlinetrackevents track day !

Well.....
My best lap was 1:33.06 at the Streets of Willow the car handled awesome !!!! as if on rails - got rid of that pesky understeer and the QR made it easier to drive at the track
There was a recent Motor Trend article testing the 05 STi & 05 EVO MR at the very same track, same configuration (CW w/ bowl) the MR lapped 1:34:38 and the STi 1:35:37 and they also tested the Lambo Gallardo @ 1:33:42
I feel I can still extract another second or 2 - just need more practice - I'm not driving to the limits of braking yet
I got video where I'm chasing down a stock EVO - and I could pretty much turn on his inside line :)
Now a modded EVO would be faster .... and I know i'm not comapring 2 stock cars - I'm comparing my car setup against others so yes it's not a fair comparison !

Ok - here's the video >>click save as (42 MB)<< (http://subaru-wrx-sti.com/web/evochase.mpg)

Lower Quality Streamable >>Click to view or save as(15 MB)<< (http://subaru-wrx-sti.com/web/evochase.wmv)

- I caught up to these 2 then passed them, the red wagon was awesome... nice handling not that easy to chase down ! - I spunout too: dumb mistake, missed my braking point, + I downshifted too early .... I was paying too much attention to the cars behind me rather than the road ahead!

http://subaru-wrx-sti.com/web/WSLAP.jpg

The pump in the STi has been working OK so far, just slight hint of heavy steering at times but nothing major (stopped at a grade) - no noises so far!

Well! I'm glad to see more people getting into the quick racks rev-lab has to offer. I was starting to feel as if the interest had worn off. For those who want to know, the 11.5:1 rack is entirely streetable. I've owned mine since May and driving with that ratio still brings a smile. It's the best mod I've made EVER! because I make use of it every time I drive (d'uh!).
Nope. No problems. No kicking from the power steering. Two turns lock-to-lock is no big deal in any driving regime I've been in. The steering effort is way into my comfort zone, and feels more substantial-natural. The Noltec steering rack bushings help too.
So, if you like the 12.5:1 rack you will positively LOVE the 11.5:1 rack. :D No, it's not twitchy. ;) You'd be surprised how much faster the average driver is than even this ratio presents, imho. I refer to average driver input. A 10.5:1 rack is not inconsiderable except for reasons having to do with the physical considerations of fitting such a rack in the stock housing. There is a concern for the housing walls becoming too thin. This from Tibor at Rev-lab.
So see if you can get some of those 11.5:1 racks. You'll be glad you did.
I just thought I'd do a search to see if the interest was still there.
later!

yep - the rack is costly and there are many other mods that will make more of a difference in track times such as coilovers / braces/ ALK/ exhaust/ EMS/ tires/ etc....

but the rack certainly helps and makes everyday driving even more fun !!

Funny thing happened too... this morning I get a call from Tibor - I didn't know he was from RevLab! he was enquiring about the rack I took off from my STi and had put up for sale in the classifieds.... so he bought it and my OEM rack will be on its way to Oooooooh Canada !!! Of the two options, race 11.5:1 or standard 12.5:1 which one do you guys recommend for street and track use (6 to 10 track days per year)? Which one is closest to the EVO8?

I drove a EVO and was blown away by how quick the rack was but I don't want to go switching cars at this point.

Are they still availible?

I drove a friend of mines car with the rack but it was at slow paddock speeds and didn't really get the full feel of it, but I'm considering it more and more due to the track days that I run.

I'd recommend the 12.5:1 rack if you do a lot of highway miles and it's your daily driver. That one is closest to the EVO rack. We'll have a couple more in stock in a week or two and I'm sending another 2 out tomorrow to get converted.

12.5:1 is great!
daily driving : IMO it's not "twitchy" at all, I drive my STi daily and while the steering is quicker, it's not to the point that it makes it require extensive amount of attention, I can still drive in the freeway w/ one hand (when on the c-phone)

track/ spirited driving : there's no substitute!

I think it's an awesome upgrade, especially if you are looking to GREATLY change the way your car feels & "handles". It really made the car feel even sportier!

Once you have Quick Rack you never go back!

Aerosim has a great price package here - installation, shipping, alignment by W.E.A.

Highly Recommend it !
