Hi All.

I'm a noob in seach of shallow mount speakers for my '04 Impreza OBS. The shallowest that I could find that are of decent quality are the Infinity REF 6001SI, which are 6.5" and about 1-7/8" deep. Does anyone know if these will fit without the aid of a spacer?

Are there any decent quality speakers out there that will fit without a spacer? 6.5" or 5.25". Doesn't really matter. I just wanna get rid of the crappy paper ones.

Thanx...

Why not use a spacer and open yourself up to a much bigger speaker selection?!?

Have you looked at the Focal Polyglass Vslim speakers? Don't remember what the mounting depth is, but supposed to be fairly shallow.

My speakers were 2.5" deep and fit fine, not sure what the max depth is

shoot....

I made a 3/4 inch thick spacer out of MDF and I dynamatted the door panel and I put some nice viper components in there...

I wouldn't limit my speaker selection because I wouldn't want to use spacers...

yeah, almost anything can fit with spacers, i made 3/4" spacers and fit 2.44" depth jl audio vr coaxials that i had sitting around, mine are just made out of mdf, but for 25 bucks you can buy a set that has everything you need, search for easy coast scooby and you'll find em

Thanks for the suggestions, folks.

The reason I was trying to go without spacers is that I heard from an installer that if the speaker gets too close to the grill, it might limit the movement of the speaker so that it might not sound so good.

Why oh why did Subaru make their doors so thin?

If I were you, I'd call or e-mail the folks over at IAPerformance (http://www.iaperformance.com). They make spacers and know Subies. I doubt you'll have problems using their spacers, but they can certainly set your mind at ease... FWIW, I have a set of Focal Access 6.5" component speakers in the doors of my STi with absolutely no problems.

Couple things you can do to avoid the grill problem you mention:

You can grind down the back of the door panel for more room.
IAPerformance included longer door clips to space the panel out further.
Use 2 washers on four of the speaker mounting screws so the screw sticks out above the speaker surround to give it clearance.

Shallow speaker recommendation: DEI Directed 3065s, they will fit anywhere.

When tdflex says "grind down the back of the door panel" don't get too concerned if you haven't looked at it yet. There are just a couple of thin ribs that can be removed with a utility knife very easily. I have Infinity Kappa 60.5 CS's in mine. They installed very easily with the IA spacers.
