I just pulled the factory radio out of my wifes 2005 Legacy/Outback 2.5i and this is what I found: The OEM HU's face plate is oversized-it ears out well beyond the standard single or double DIN dimensions in all directions to form the main center council trim. The flasher button and the manual VAC controls are integrated in the plate theough cutouts and can easily be removed via machine screws. Owners of Legacy's with Auto VAC controls may or may not be out of luck. A lot of time would need to be spent making a wood template to accept an aftermarket standard DIN H/U'c cutout along with the VAC and flasher cutouts as well. The Template would then need to fastened to the HU's side mounting plates via some sheet metal angle brackets and of couse painted to match the OEM trim. Can anybody suggest another material other than wood that can be used for a face plate? Note; I own a standard assortment of household tools so limit your suggestions to materials that can be formed using dremel-please no tig welding or machining. Removal instructions: pop the trim plate around the stick shift, unscrew the side trim and pop them out, unscrew the HU's mounting clips then remove the VAC screws from both mounting brackets to remove the radio.
