View Full Version : Window Tinting
SammyDFG 06-18-2001, 08:05 PM A few questions about window tinting...
(my first mod i am going to do haha)
-I'm wondering how many people have their window tinted and what % tints did you get?
-I'm hearing some people got 5% tints, isnt that extremely dark and dangerous to drive in?
-What % is legal in your state? Here in New York its 35%
-Have you ever heard or been in an incident where you got a ticket for having your windows tinted?
-What is the darkest window tint % for the rear window so it can be safe to drive in at night and day?
:p

1 - i have 20% front and 5% on all 3 rear
2 - dark yes... dangerous... yes if you are not used to it and dont have adequate lighting
3 - 35% on front is legal in WA - rears? do as you please pretty much...
4 - got a ticket in CA (twice) for having tint on the front windows - had to pull the tint twice to get tix dropped
5 - dark as you feel comfy with. if you are not comfy with, dont do it. 35% is good... 20% is still good but a bit dark for some.

rktwgn 06-19-2001, 07:33 AM I would definitely advise against tinting the windshield! You could be in an accident and take a lot of blame (if blameless) just because of the tint on the windshield. A smart lawyer would argue that your vision (especially at night) was impaired because of the tint. I just had a strip of tint put across the windshield down to the top of the rearview mirror bracket to help cut glare. As for the rest of the car, 28% or 33% is fine. Anything darker and you look like a "pimpmobile".
joefong 06-19-2001, 10:47 PM I got 30% all around...5 windows. Looks pretty damn good..:D
I think that the tint is all about how u like it...everyone has their own opinion but here in cali they have so many different interpretations of the laws it dont matter what u do...

the_gille 06-19-2001, 11:04 PM Subie Gal - You are from Washington. Yes? Why then did you have to strip the tint in a state that you arent even from? Unless you were a Cali resident at that time, then my question is pointless.

DoctorNick 06-19-2001, 11:58 PM when do you start to actualy notice tint? cuz I was thinking of like a 70-80% tint just to semi protect my interor from summer sun....I don't want dark cuz the cops will be on me and I want soem so it keeps a little cooler. Justa thought.

Longitude 06-20-2001, 01:54 AM I gots the 22% reflective mirror Blue tint on the rear 3 windows. WRC Safari style babee!!
--Long
JenisonWRX 06-20-2001, 08:14 AM 5% on back and rear windows
20% on front windows
5% for windshield strip
yes its dark
yes it looks bad azz
I took it to the dealer yesterday to get a touchup done and when I pulled up to the detailing department everyone stopped...walked over and say...'that is best looking WRX I have seen with those tints'
I really must post some pics.
stumpz 06-20-2001, 09:12 PM 50% all around. Very light. Didn't want to attract too much attention.
anastrophe 06-21-2001, 12:12 AM that's exactly what i did a couple of weeks ago - 50% all around (except windshield, of course). llumar film. nice. you have to stop and think for a second whether or not it really is tinted, which is just what i was looking for - low profile, not attention getting, but keeps the car about 50 degrees F cooler on a blistering hot day.
Folklorez 06-21-2001, 12:22 AM ive got 36% grey on 5 windows...
its a light, easy to see thru, kind of tint. not to light yet not too dark. i think it has a classy look to it but thats just me... :)
i Paid $225, i think thats a lil expensive though...
here in chicago its illegal to have the front 2 windows tinted and as for the back it doesnt matter. i got a $25 dollar ticket 4 having my front ones tinted. :( i was in shock, usually cops wont even bother if its a light tint but this guy was a prick...
SubaDan 06-21-2001, 12:47 AM I got 20% all the way around except for the front window. Got a 6 inch white strip acrossed the top though. I know its illegal cause when I paid it had to be in cash and on the receit it said alarm system. HAHA If I get pulled over I just roll my front two windows down and they don't even get to see the tint on those. Plus with a radar detector and a FOB badge on the license plate. Don't really have to be worried too much about being hassled. Most people think I am an undercover cop. Its funny. No one wants to race me. Thats why I always win when I race like top sports cars. I beat a Viper once. Shuush I am sure he was really trying too.
DoctorNick 06-21-2001, 12:47 AM can you guys throw up some pictures of cars with light tints...I am thinking fo doing it to all my windows...and yeah I don't care what teh cops in chicago say...cuz I will just make sure my windows are rolled down when they pull up next to me :D

Folklorez 08-16-2001, 10:57 PM go with a light reflective mirror tint for your white rex... i think that would look good.

35% Platinum reflective tint.
verrrrry subtle, get about the same kind of privacy as 30% normal tint.
I saw a white impreza with bronze reflective, i like that look alot
subymamma 08-17-2001, 05:48 PM rktwgn: I take exception to that "pimpmobile" statement. I have all my windows really dark (not limo tint, but you can't really see in much) AND had some tint on my windshield!
I'm sick of getting cut on for skin cancer and that's all I think about when I feel that sun cookin' in on my arms. I love the shade and have used very dark tint almost 20 years on different vehicles. It never seems difficult to me to see thru in the dark and this had never been an issue with me. My fronts actually are illegal but in Florida they don't really enforce it.
If your fronts are illegal and you get pulled over for anything, roll down your front windows right away. Don't give the cop a close-up look....
Azuth 08-17-2001, 06:09 PM I got 35% all around. None on the windshield. The look seems just about right. You can just barely see a person inside the car. 35% is the limit here in GA. I paid $165.
i ain't got no tint on no windows and it sucks. when i do get it, i'm going 20
rosco
theGrideimpreza4u 08-18-2001, 11:40 AM i got 20% all around and it looks like 5% at night good enough for me.anything u do here in pittsburgh is almost not allowed i got pulled for a clear license plate cover !..lata greg
Sandkicker 08-18-2001, 04:44 PM Just tinted mine yesterday. Went with 35% all around... looks perfect on the midnight black, expecially with our dark interiors.
The legal limit here in UT is 43% front sides, 28% rear sides and back. the 35% looks pretty sharp without lookin ghetto-style. Apparently the cops must not care around here too much because most cars I see with tint, have a bit darker than mine. The guy rolling out of the garage before me got his tinted to 13%. I guess it depends where you live and how scared you are of getting a ticket for it. Around here they give you a no-cost fix-it ticket the first time. If you don't fix it in 30 days and get caught again, they fine you... not sure how much though.
Cost me $159 and if i get pulled over for 'em being too dark, the place said they'd take it off for free... not a bad deal in my mind. If that happened, I would just re-tint the front 2 to the legal limit. I can also see fine out, even at night. At night though it's hard to see in, even with my face against the glass. I recommend 30-35% for a sharp look, without drawing too much attention.
remarcable 08-18-2001, 05:44 PM I forget what percent they did on my wagon, but it's the max SC allows. I believe they called what was put on the rear "Limo" tint and the front windows were 20%. That sound right?
I have vision problems occasionally on non-lighted streets when turning left... I either have to roll down the window or lean really far forward. It has freaked me out a few times. Rear visibility took a little while to get used to, you just have to adjust brain and eyes a bit darker than normal.
My favorite part about having dark tint in the back is that those idiot SUVs with lights 6" off the ground no longer bother me with glare when tailgating.
http://www.remarcable.net/misc/legacy_outback/gallery/Image66.jpg
If you are behind me and there is a light source ahead of me, you will be able to make out shadows (seat, radar detector, etc), other than that I'm pretty much invisible to tailgaters and passing traffic (until they reach the front windows, and then depending on the lighting they might see me).
Make sure you pay a little extra and get a lifetime warranty and high quality tint... not that purple crap.
