The thought of Subaru bringing back the SVX is both exciting and nerve racking. Originally the SVX was a very exciting car for it's time but that was more then ten years ago. The scary part is that the original SVX was close to the final nail in Subarus coffin by 1994; it took the Outback to pull Subaru out of the red. Those are two diabolically different cars.
The fear is that Subaru is outpacing it's momentum by introducing a slew of performance vehicles to a market that has yet to fully except Subaru as a performance brand.
Timeline: 2003 MY Intoduction of new coupe, model designation yet to be official, pricing is uncertain. 2003 MY STX, confirmed by SOA, priced in the low to mid $20Gs. Turbo Forester, confirmed by SOA, price will break $30Gs, current MY Foresters S pushing high $20Gs. 2004 MY moderate redesign to all Legacys. 2005 MY intoduction of entirely new, larger platform. Official details to be announced by early 2003 CY.
By 1997 the MSRP of the SVX was $35,000 +- but were sold at $31,500 +-. We were nearly giving the last one away and we all breathed a sigh of relief when the last one left the lot in spring of 1998. We still have half a dozen left over 2001 MY 6 cly. Outbacks on the lot that list for $30Gs to $33Gs.
Is this new "SVX" going to break $30Gs? If it's not actually a WRX STi then Subaru runs the huge risk of creating another original SVX or 6 cyl. Outback.

the SVX now sells for WAY OVER BLUE book...
that car was sooo ahead of it's time.... totally.. it has more gadgets on it than you can imagine... if you are an SVX owner, you know what i mean!!! :D
i am totally looking forward to the 'new svx'... i really hope Subaru goes through with it! why not? they always have the Ouback and Forester platform to fall back on.... those are very strong sales for Subaru to fall back on if the limited SVX flops drastically....
i want one! :D

I completely agree that the SVX was an awsome car that was way ahead of it's time, I've driven them and I've sold a couple. And yes it had a lot of cool gadgets. But it almost single handidly killed Subaru in North America. Subaru struggled tooth and nail to to cover the financial damage the SVX produced.
Remember 1991 through 1994? Subaru North America was almost bankrupt and was seriousley close to pulling out of this market.
Consider some of the global similarities between the late 1980s, early 1990s and this current era. In that previous era the Yen was fairly strong while the US was in a recession. Subaru was still trying to be all things to all people; competing in Honda and Toyota territory with the majority os Subaru sales being FWD cars. Fast forward to the current era. After the bad Japanes recession of the mid 1990s the Yen is beginning to strengthen while the US economy is unstable at best and quit possibley headed for another recession. The AWD niche that Subaru has nearly owned since 1995 is only a few months away from being invaded by every manufacturer selling cars in North America.
Subaru developed this niche and exploited it. Are they strong enough to defend it? Defending it may require more money then Subaru has. Are their pockets deep enough?
The good news for Subaru is that for the last six years they have been raking in the cash. Sales have consistenly increased an averaged of about 12% a year while corprate profits have averaged over 20%. For such a small manufacturer they have a huge amount of money.
The giant risk Subaru faces in producing another SVX should not be taken lightly. Is a new SVX going to be as exotic as the original? Something that flies in the face of contemporary automotive design as pointedly and as brashly as the original SVX? If this new car sports the SVX model designation then the answer to both those questions should most assuredly be a resounding YES! Because that's what any SVX is and should be. Anything less then that doesn't deserve the SVX logo.
But think about the cost invloved with puting something like that on the street.
We need to be careful whith what we wish for.

i read this quite a while ago in a magazine. i forget which one. it was published as being strictly a rumor, and thats all this is: a rumor. but anyway, they said that the STX would be a coupe based on the WRX platform, and would have a higher-outputting engine than the rex. they said it would be japan's answer to the TT. i dont know the accuracy of this information, but if true, it would be pretty cool. they said something about it being under $30k in price.

If Subaru can make the new SVX like a Porsche 911 Turbo then it will sell like hot cakes, you know, flat six twin turbo. :p Anyways I think if the body design is not as wired as the old SVX and offer manual transmission I think it should do okay if it is under $30gs.
