I wanted to purchase HIDs for my 05 wrx but supposedly theyre now illegal in California. They also cost a lot and id rather get suspension than HIDs for now. I plan on just purchasing some Piaa Extreme White Plus headlight bulbs but will i run into any problems due to the day time running lights? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Aftermarket HIDs are illegal on a federal basis in all states. That doesn't stop many people from having them, however you're better off not installing HIDs on the stock lights on your 05. Generally the results aren't too good and you will never achieve anywhere near the lighting performance of the OEM HIDs found in the STi.
The only problem you will have related to the DRLs and aftermarket bulbs is that those expensive bulbs will burn out faster because they will be on all the time, although at reduced intensity. Before changing bulbs you should disable the DRLs permanently, preferably by disconnecting the main control module.

Or pack a spare set of bulbs in the trunk. :) Unless you splurge for the really expensive stuff (silverstars) it's not going to break the bank or anything by having a spare set handy.

Sylvania Silverstar - tinted blue bulbs suck
Osram Silverstar - not tinted and not sold in the US are good (http://www.powerbulbs.com)

<-- i have HIDs in EDM projectors ;)

PIAA's line of tinted bulbs produce less light than equivalent-wattage regular bulbs, sacrifising light output for colour temperature. Be aware of this (applies to all tinted bulbs).

The PIAA Ion Crystal H3 bulbs are probably their only good "coated" bulbs. They're supposed to put out 85w levels of light while only drawing only 55w, but maybe that could be to compensate a bit for the coating... ;)

The Ion Crystals emit an amber-yellow light for use in inclement weather conditions, and are not coated AFAIK.

I had the PIAA extreme whites. The light output was whiter than stock bulbs, but I don't know if it was any brighter. The main thing you'll want to know is reliability of these... it's terrible. The first bulb died after 7 months, so both were replaced on the 1 year warranty. The second set lasted about 6 months. These bulbs were way too expensive for having to get a set every 6 - 7 months. I now use the stock ones with no regrets.

Darn, I wish I had known there was a one year warranty on the bulbs. My drivers side bulb crapped out after about the same amount of time (DRL's not disabled). Was gonna by a new set, but didn't feel like spending the dough, and put the stockers back in.
