View Full Version : Squeaky/Squealy Front End

I have a 97 Impreza 2.2L. When I drive, usually while I used my brakes, but even sometimes when just turning corners, I hear a squeak. It sounds like it's coming from the front end of the vehicle. I've sprayed brake cleaner into to brakes, which didn't help all that much. Anyone have any advice as to what is causing this?

Sounds like it's time to take off the wheels and check the brakes for:
1) pad wear (need new pads?)
2) proper lubrication (are shoes not properly sliding on the pins?)
3) proper piston function
and so forth. It's not rocket science, and replacing pads/cleaning up the caliper is a very doable DIY maintenance.

The pads are brand new, and what do I use for lube? I had some stuff come with it, but I didn't put it on. And it even does it when I'm turning too, so I'm not really sure it's just the brakes.

The stuff that comes with pads (in little disposable plastic packets) I usually use as anti-squeal, applying it to the following places:
1) spread between back of each pad and inner shim (the thin metal "plate" that clips onto the back of the pad.
2) dab a small amount on the top and bottom clips that hold the pad pairs together, right where they touch the pad units.
Be VERY careful not to get the stuff anywhere else, especially not on the pad friction surface or the rotor!

This should probably fix your problem (assuming you are using Subaru brand pads; aftermarket pads tend to be more likely to squeal). If you don't have the stuff that came with the pads, you can also use high-temp caliper grease (it's very important to get the right stuff, so it doesn't melt under high brake temps and drip onto pads/rotor!). I would get a good synthetic one -- one tube will be under $20 and will last you all your future brake pad changes.

Whenever you change your pads, you also need to check that the two pins that the pad units slide on are well-lubed (again, only using high-temp caliper grease). You want to make sure that the lock pin slides smoothly when you remove it, and the caliper rotates smoothly around the guide pin. If these don't slide smoothly, the pads may not release from the rotor properly, causing wear/noises when the brake is not being pressed.

Thanks, I'll be sure to try that out .. it's starting to get REALLY annoying.
