Whats the difference between yellow and red? Are Optima's lighter at all?

the yellow top is a deep cycle battery, the red top is a basic battery with a high reserve time. If you are looking for a smaller lighter battery you can buy the optima compact car battery or go by pyramid audio and check out there stinger batterys. i can get optimas though my shop just let me know if you want prices on them.

Also all optimas are Dry Cell Batteries so you dont have to worry about them tipping and leaking or setting them on concrete, they also hold a charge for a really long time.

they won't discharge on concrete?

nice... that problem has always bothered me. I deal with batterys on concrete a lot in a shop. Maybe someday all car batteries will be like that. They are probably safer in an accident too, that would be a good lever to make them a requirement for manufactures. Optima's for everyone!!

what does the word concrete mean in battery terms?

Resbum

It means... concrete, as in, what the floor of your garage is made of.

setting a battery on a concrete floor will drain it dead.

Lol.... indeed.

Ahh.. gotcha. How fast do batteries typically drain if they are not connected?

Einsti3n

i dont think that they do drain if they just arent connected, however if you were to set a battery on a concrete floor, it would lose its charge in a day or so, i think.

This was from www.batteriesplus.com. Kind of interesting.

Is it really true that it is bad for an automotive or
motorcycle battery to be stored directly on concrete?

This is a myth. It did have some basis in fact with the very early designs of these types of batteries when the outside case material was somewhat porous and allowed minute amounts of electrolyte to seep through the case to the concrete. This would in turn react with conductive materials in concrete and cause a voltage drain thereby "killing" the battery. Today, all batteries of this type, have a polypropylene exterior case which is extremely resistant to any leaks unless damaged. Storage of a battery directly on concrete will not harm the battery.

I have taken brand new batteries and put them on the concrete, they will go dead. No leaks at all, just with an earth ground present the battery will go dead. If the battery has one of those little spacers on the bottom, it will be ok, maybe that's what they're talking about. I really don't think this is a myth though, it has just happened to me too many times. Go to every auto shop/store in town and they will all have their batteries on a rack or shelf.

whats up turtle? umm let me see what i can get you a battery for. i will talk to the interstate guy as soon as he comes in. But if you want a red top i will be trying to get a bunch for pretty cheap so i will keep in touch.

though my shop i get the batterys from interstate. but i used to have a line on pallots of red tops in different sizes. my friends dad can get pallots of red tops from the millitary, he usally sells them for a like $60.00, but i will have to talk to him tonite. basically the millitary says if the battery is dead, lets just put a new one and throw away the dead one out.

thanks
