Babelfish Translation...
Subaru Tokyo motor show
As for theme of the Subaru Tokyo motor show "the Open all roads car the joy of living, in all people". As for this a request that is included we would like to make the respective life, one by one rich, regardless of the element of the person who rides and the person who is used.
As for the eyeball of the booth sale is planned spring of next year, new model it is light ' R1 ' of the automobile (earl one). They are 3 door hatch-backs 2 + 2 R1 last year was sold ' R2 ' to utilize design motif, designates 2 name riding in a car as the basis.
To shorten substantially, by not considering the habitability of the rear cockpit, total length and the wheel base by comparison with R2 the forum where it is possible, even design is not the present lightly automobile and is refined is actualized.
Engine and CVT etc. are diverted the DOHC power train of R2, but it has become something which as for commodity concept you called 2 + 2 mini cars of the adult, differs.
To other things development was advanced ' with the red hat and collaboration of in presser ' of the welfare vehicle which is called the Subaru trance CARE and ' ・・f痰激bタ' and the home delivery trader, ' samba of red hat specification - ' and so on is displayed.
With motor show it became familiarity, the driving simulator - the combination our virtuous type device can also be exhibited, experienced.

This R1e concept is much more successful in terms of styling, as compared to the production R1. Much larger wheels, and a much more graceful body shape, with better integrated headlights.
Even so, the production R1 is a step forward from the R2.

Jon [in CT] 10-14-2004, 11:49 PM Fuji Heavy issued an English language 4-page press release today titled "Exhibition outline of the 38th Tokyo Motor Show for Commercial & Barrier - free Vehicles." It's at

s204bb 10-15-2004, 05:16 AM After the R1e concept, this is a big disappointment. It just looks like a typical Japanese small hatch. :(
i like the concept version much better

Sauceboy01 10-16-2004, 02:41 PM concept looks very close, just a few differences. like bumper, and that body ridge along the side connecting to the rear taillight is gone on the original version..
and some other minor things.

True, but this is a perfect example of "the devil is in the details." The changes are subtle, but HUGELY impact on the overall impression.
This is why I keep saying don't base your comments on the new-direction styling of the new Subarus until they actually hit the streets. Making comments or judgements on heavily taped over test mules, or non-production concepts is misguided at best.
The R1e concept is clearly better looking than the production R1. That in no way means that other future production Subies will also look worse. They could just as easily look much better than any of the concepts. We just don't know...

What the heck is that extra zig-zag red lever down at the base of the center console?
STi Boy 10-19-2004, 09:02 PM What the heck is that extra zig-zag red lever down at the base of the center console?
e-brake i think...
STi Boy 10-19-2004, 09:02 PM That is one beautiful car, It looks like a Toyota echo
yep! i love the echo and the r1!!
WRX Fan 10-19-2004, 09:53 PM Some of the items on that car are for access by disabled persons. That is why you see the spinner etc.
sir_wagon 10-19-2004, 10:15 PM What the heck is that extra zig-zag red lever down at the base of the center console?
Combination brake-accelerator for people with no leg movement?
I sort of like the styling, both inside and out. The two-tone interior blends well.
There is so much you can do in such a small package and still keep enough interior space to make it worth the effort, so these mini-cars will often resemble giant eggs to a certain extent. :alien: If you compare it to other microcars, I'll say this one came out looking above averge.

.
BINGO. Just a few proportion changes, and the cars changes from fairly decent, to definitly now.
Almost like when you see a set of twin sisters and while they (obviously) looks alike, but one of them is hot, and the other not. Subtle differences make it or break it.
Now besides thhe new fangled corporate grill, I see that bulging "shoulder" running acrioss the side of the concept. Too bad its gone in the production version, cuz I think that shoulder ridge looks pretty nice - breaks up the body and makes it look a little more agressive.
hhcchen 10-19-2004, 11:13 PM so, they do have the ability to make a minimal front overhang...
they should do that to the rest of their vehicles...

The R1 does not have boxer engine like the other subaru. That is why it is possible have a short overhang in the front. Having a boxer engine in the front, it will be impossible to have a really short overhang unless they move all the radiators on the top of the engine.
All the audis have long overhangs comparing to benz, bmw. When u have engine in front of the front driveshaft, you are going to have a long overhang.
Cheers,
Dusty
happasaiyan 10-20-2004, 08:30 AM the real question is: can i shove an ej257 in there? :)

Nobody is upset over the size.. we were expecting that. We're upset that it went from:

Hell, the R2 looks good, but the R1 lost it's good looks in becoming more R2 like.

Looks like crap.
districtlogic 10-21-2004, 02:17 PM i love it. I'm from europe, and as most of you know, europe and asia have many small cars, due to the design of streets and how crowded they are. The R1 will compete nicely against the Smart, Fiat, and such. The design is pretty cool for the small car range and fits four people with some nice versatility in storage, thats what people overseas will look for.

I agree completely. People here complaining about the R1, et al, either have no appreciation or understanding of why these mico cars exist. Just ignore them.

ringe 10-21-2004, 03:54 PM Looks way better in production than concept form, mainly because the front wing-grill design is much more graceful/flowing with the form of the car. The wing-tips go straight out and slightly up, as opposed to the downward slant on the concept that looked so counter intuitive. Not sure I would buy one, but if they can clean this up for the Impreza it may not look too bad.
teknisa 10-21-2004, 07:30 PM I think that car would sell extreamly well in Italy.
The Smart cars over there are as popular as a Honda Civic here. Everyone has one.

:p :p
that is too funny. i was just down in Sydney, and I swear if you parked the JDM bumper '05 Legacy next to the US one, you'd notice the same thing, i mean we're talking only 4" in bumper length (the JDM being 4" shorter or so), but man, it makes a big difference in a subtle way (that sounds oxymoronic but its true!)
districtlogic 10-22-2004, 01:12 AM Yeah, thats very true, when i first came here, I was like WOAH! all the cars have way bigger bumpers here, i thought it was weird at first. America safety standards are pretty high compared to the rest of the world, which is a good thing when looking at all the morons that drive in this country lol
Diabolical1 CC 10-22-2004, 03:29 AM hehe Not for big people.
I tired to get into a Honda Beat In Tokyo once, they had to take the roof off. This roof doesn't look removeable.
