View Full Version : Short Shifters

Hey, all.

I want some local interpretations of short shifters.

Do you have one? Why/Why not?

Which one do you have?

How much was it?

Why is it good/bad?

I'm trying to avoid the "I have this one, it rules" types of answers--useful feedback both good and bad. Shift feel, did it make things easier/harder to shift under certain situations, etc.

I appreciate the input!

I enjoyed my Kart-Boy, don't know if he is still making em or makes em for GD models or not...

Not to short, not to long, good solid quick shifts, worked like a champ, probably could have built it or at least modified the stock one for alot less...

So the throw was just about right for you with the Kart-Boy?

How would you have modified stock? Just shortened the stick, or go more indepth than that?

Kartboy SS with the bushings and the tranny mounts were the best combo for the rex IMO.

I have a factory short throw shifter and its tuff getting in gear compared to my old civic. I always for some reason miss shift when shifting into 4th or 2nd. What do bushings actually do? Would they make it more smooth when shifting?

I too have the Kartboy with bushings. I dont have any aftermarket ones to compare it to, but I definately like the positive shift feel as opposed to the stock shifter. I would like it a little shorter, but the throw is acceptable.

I like my subaru factory short shifter. But the only points of comparison I have are the new/used wrx's I test drove (4) before buying mine. The SS is definitely shorter/quicker and more positive feeling than stock, non-SS. But obviously doesn't solve the stiff transitions in the lower gears. I love this car, but I would have to rate the gearbox smoothness fairly low compared to previous MT cars I've owned. No revelations there.

If I had a car with a stock shifter, I would definitely look at swapping to an SS as one of the earlier mods.

The factory short throw shifter is excellent. But, the Kart Boy aftermarket version with the hard bushings is every bit as good (plus it costs less). FWIW...My experience with both types of shifters is that there is no real difference.

Well, I'd be interested, AK, depending on the price. :) I was thinking about keeping the stock knob, however. Selling them seperately? Or a good deal for both?

I have the kart boy ss with the hardened bushings as well. I also got the momo knob. It is my first and only mod so far. The only problem is everyone has the same set up ;-)

I have no real experience with any of the other setups but I like the kartboy MUCH better than stock.

I have the COBB short shifter and bushings. It is adjustable so the the through and shifter height are perfect for me. Instal was easy. My only issue is that I had to turn the metal ring holding the lower rubber dust seal on around so that the shifter would not hit it when going into first. Love every minute of shifting now.

I still think that the Kartboy shifter and bushings was the best mod for the money on the WRX.
