I'm about to purchase my first set of tires on my 04 STi .How do the azenis stack up to the re070 on my sti. I want the same perfomance. If you guys have any other tires that you think are better(for dry performance only some track use and autox) Please let me KNow. I do not want to be disappointed with the tires that I buy. Thanks for all your help.

I, personally don't think the "Azenis" is a good street tire and they get 'greasy' on the track when they get hot....but they seem to be the autox tire of choice by many.
Some shaved Kumho MX's or Falken 451's may be a good choice or maybe something a bit more exotic....

I have the "Azenis" and won't be buying them again....too scary in the rain and just not right for my taste.

How about the bfg gforce t/a kd? Are they better than the azenis and re070? This is one of the hardest choices I have had make on my car. I was thinking about the toyo ra-1 but I would like a tire that i could get about 10K. I think ra-1 only get like 7500.

I think ra-1 only get like 7500.

....THAT is not an empirical.....

You could roast 'em in an afternoon or they could last a good long time.

The RA-1 will be head, neck, and shoulders above any non-R compound except in wear(and maybe wet performance when worn).

The BFG's may be another good choice...stiff sidewall...they don't get as much 'action' around this board as other choices.

I've had the Azenis, the RE070 (two sets), Pilot Sport A/S, RA-1s, and a couple autocross R-compounds on my 2004 STi. Remembering that this is merely my opinion and I'm not a car tester or anything, I like the RE070 for summer street tires. They feel better to me than the Azenis, but I'm not sure if it is quite enough to justify the big price difference -- the Azenis are cheap! The PS A/S are really nice all-seasons, but they are certainly no match for the grip of summer performance tires (duh). The RA-1's are fabulous as I've said many times -- tons more grip than any street tire, and far better wear than autocross R compounds (both in absolute miles and in heat cycling). But they are an R compound tire and will obviously wear faster than standard street tires. I have no experience with some of the other tires you might want to consider (Kumho MX, Falken FK-451, BFG).

I've been on the track with the Michelin's (not terrible and nice in a downpour), RE070s, and RA-1's. The RE070 was just fine. The RA-1 is so much better though, which is probably why half the BMWCCA guys at the track had them on their cars. Do you need them? Doubtful -- the RE070's work fine and better driving almost always trumps a few seconds from equipment (e.g. the instructor STi's with their RE070s were much faster than me on RA-1s). But man it's a nice feeling to have so much more grip available under braking, even if most of the time a porky 540i in front of you won't let you use it.

For autocross the RE070 or Azenis are fine, but they're certainly no R-compound. The RA-1 is worth on the order of 2 seconds on a typical autocross course over a street tire like the RE070. That's huge. Kumho's or Hoosier's are worth a bit more. If I had to choose a street tire and cost were removed, I'd go for the RE070 over the Azenis (that's what I did).

Thanks for yor opion. That helps alot. How many miles do you think your RA-1 will get or have gotten? I have been looking online at used re070 and with only a couple of thousand miles on them they cost $400-$500. I think that might be the way I go. Then I will start looking for another set of rims and put the RA-1's on them. I only put about 5k-7.5k on my car. If i bought the RA-1's then I would have to buy a new set every year. that is $1000 that i could put towards an fp green, suspenion upgrade, and other parts, such as more tools for the garage. Every guy needs more tools.
