View Full Version : Avic-N1 and the mystery of the missing sound

I have an 05 STi, and just last week took out the factory premium system and installed an Avic-n1 and pioneer component speakers. Install went smooth, no big issues. Then I go to test the system out and everything works (navigation, mp3, radio, dvd, etc.) except there is absolutely no sound. Nothing, cricket cricket, hear a feather drop, silence….

So I go through the usual steps of checking what’s wrong. I tested the speakers on a different system, they all work. Using a multimeter, I tested the signal coming out of the avic to the speakers, it’s a healthy 12volts. All wiring checks out ok. Wiring harness connections check out ok

So I think maybe the amp inside the avic might be fried, so I try hooking up the factory stereo (which I know works perfectly) to the harness and I get nothing…. Silence again, identical symptoms. Unfortunately, I no longer have the factory speakers to test this with, but just in case I use another set of old speakers that I know work and still get nothing, same damn thing as with the avic, there is a signal at the speakers, just no sound at all.

So: both units are putting out a signal

That signal gets to the speakers. Leads are ok.

Speakers work; I tested them.

= no sound

doesn’t make any sense.

I have no frikkin’ clue what else to try! http://forums.nasioc.com/ubb-files/smilies/mad.gif

Please help.

12V to your speakers? Yikes!

Read off the ohms for each speaker measuring from the headunit. They should be 4 ohms give or take an ohm. Anything less may mean something is shorted..

check your speaker connection,at least one of them is touching metal, either a wire is shorted to ground or when you install the speaker, the connection is hitting the metal surface.Turn the radio off then on and listen for a speaker to pop, that will be the one that has the ground on it.Good luck.

Thanks for the info. As for the 12V, that was a typo, there should have been a decimal point in there. I'll go out and try looking for a ground tomorrow, it's far too cold to do anything in the garage tonight.

Quick question though: none of the 4 speakers makes a sound, would that lead one to believe all 4 are grounded? Or would it take just one to mess everything up? There is a "pop" sound when I first turn on the car that comes from the speakers. I'll look into that too.

One grounded speaker will shut down the amp. in the radio(overload),the sound you are listening for will be very slight,if you dont hear a sound then use an ohm meter to check for the ground.Remove the radio harness from the car, gound one of the meter lead and use the other to probe the speaker wires,be careful not to probe 12 volts. When you find the grounded speaker the meter will read 0 ohm.

Man oh man, you guys are great, I dont know why I didn't figure this out on my own, what a noob. Anyways, I went out, checked the resistance on all 4 speaker leads, and sure enough, both the front speakers had a little tiny spot where they were touching the sheet metal of the door. Fixed that, and now I'm enjoing the sweet sounds of my $2k install. Thanks!
