View Full Version : help me decide: 17s or 18s
axjms 10-22-2004, 04:36 AM Hey guys,
I am looking at getting some used rims. Is that stupid? Anyway, I can't decide if I should get 18s or 17s. I have an 04 wagon and I will be using the stockers for winter. I have read all about how 18s are heavier (slower) but handle better generally. I have also read that 18s get really beat up. I really like the looks of 18's but I don't want to destroy them and waste my money. I am looking at some 18x8 OZ superleggaras. Thanks for the input guys.
tribalwrx 10-22-2004, 04:47 AM 18's are nice but not if you plan on dragging with them, they'll slow you down, but if your not going to drag with them on then by all means go for it, i prefer the 17's but if i could get some 18's at a good price i would consider them.

AK*WRX*2004 10-22-2004, 05:19 AM I'm personally going with 17's cause I like speed over bling. I've heard that 18's do get beat up more than 17's but haven't owned either sooo... If you want your car to handle well and still go fast, go with a set of 17 by 8's. I'm either getting 17 by 7 1/2 or 17 by 8 this spring... Hope this helps. -Gene :)
hirevn 10-22-2004, 01:41 PM i just put 18s on my sti with my winter tires.i already had a great set of winter 18s so i got some decent alloys and my car handles hands down better, smoother ride and much less road noise.you may not notice a diffrence cause of the stock sti tires are a track tire so i think thats wear ive felt the diffrence.im now going to save my stock sti tires and wheels for racing and use the 18s for everyday driving.
SQUAD_907 10-22-2004, 01:45 PM 18s...wrx not designed for drag... :D
axjms 10-22-2004, 01:50 PM I see myself on the strip maybe once a year at the most. My main concern is good all around performance and decent ride quality. I know the roads are not the best around here but they are not that bad right? I am not going to thrash 18s just driving around am I? Right now I am leaning towards 18s. I will let you know if I bite the bullet and buy some.
thanks
RallyX13 10-22-2004, 02:02 PM With any low profile tire you just have to be careful when you drive. You always have to be on the alert for potholes and such. So go with the 18's. :D

Yup, be very careful with the 18's. I popped a tire and then cracekd a rim with my 18's. 17's would be better wheel protection, but 18's look better, and due to thinner sidewall have better handling normally ( using same brand tire on 17 vs 18) but likewise are more prone to pothole damage.
Sokudo 10-26-2004, 08:29 PM you have pm axjms !
dubba you are ex 10-27-2004, 12:41 AM 17s arent too small, arent too big

eurojax 10-27-2004, 05:29 AM Pro's of 18's:
Look "cooler"
less sidewall flex.
Cons of 18's
Heavier
More rotational mass = minus horsepower
Kind of ricey IMHO
Dont add to overall performance compared to 15's, 16's, and 17 inchers.
More wheel to clean :p
I will be purchasing 15 inch rims in a couple months. I'm always trying to be different
tribalwrx 10-27-2004, 06:37 AM hell if i had the spare cash i'd take mikes 17'' oz's of him, god i need something other than stock wheels on this car, well maybe tax time.
