I would have guessed the sedan/wagon ratio to be roughly the same for the Legacy models and Outback models. However, a line in a review of the new Legacy and Outback in tomorrow's NY Times (see http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/24/automobiles/24AUTO.html) caught my eye:Both the Legacy and Outback come as sedans, but Subaru's strength is in wagons, which account for about 95 percent of Outback sales (but only about a third of Legacys).I can readily believe that only 5% of all Outbacks sold are sedans - I rarely see them on the road. But I was stunned that roughly 66% of Legacys sold are sedans.

BTW, the review was very positive - the reviewer admits to having owned two Outbacks, a 1996 and a 2004.

Wow, that Legacy stat IS surprising. I hardly ever see Legacy sedans in my Chicago-area neck of the woods. I'm surprised even at the 5% of OB sedan sales. I have only seen one out and about, in the few years since it came out.

The vast majority of standard Legacies in the South are sedans.

I'm surprised there are so many Legacy sedans; I almost never see any. But then I live in the northeast ...

I'm not surprised so few Outbacks are sedans. People buy Outbacks for camping, skiing, paddling etc, and need the cargo space they get with a wagon.

Makes sense, sort of.
