View Full Version : DIY Turbo for 2.5RS?

I have a MY00 2.5RS, and like a lot of people, have been pretty disappointed with the poor availability of turbo kits.

I seem to recall that at least a few people have more or less put together their own kits. I'm beginning to think this is the only hope for me as well.

Questions:

1. Where did you get the up/down pipes from?
2. Newbie question: Are the fittings for the various parts (turbo, wastegate, etc.) standardized to the extent that they are more-or-less mix-and-match, or is this going to be a problem as well?

These seem like pretty big obstacles to me (especially #1), since I'm not able to fab my own parts.

Somebody please point me in the right direction here.

Thanks.

the turbo manifolds and up-pipes and downpipes and headers will ocome off of WRX and according to my subaru dealership will fit on an EJ25. what I might htink about doing is getting a catless up-pipe from like SHIV at vishnu perfomrnace and maybe borla headers or somehting.. they may require a little bending put its not hard for a good shop to do. you can get a good turbo for a performance shop or if you want to save money pick up something used from a junk yard for the time being. waste gates aren't too expensize. you can mix and match certain parts but not all. seeing as how most people cant or won't fabricate stuff liek this, you might be able to get custom parts and then have them modify them.... all custom jobs WILL need modification, its just to what extent.

I'm having a shop make me a few more parts for my kit. I might be able to have them fab up some replicas of my parts, I have an '01 so anything I use you'll be able to use as well.

I'll double check on prices when I get my kit here completely, but it might be an idea.

I'm almost doen with my kit so e-mail me with any questions you might have:

You can check out forcedairtech.com Or you can call the owner, Robert, at
520-632-1251.

They've been turboing Subaru's here in Arizona.

Good luck!

In short, parts are not mix and match, whatever turbocharger you choose is the central part of what you are going to do - flanges, pipes, whatnot.

Thanks for the great leads!

For up/down pipes, it sounds like the only things that will fit off-the-shelf is stuff that came out of another Subaru (to be expected). Then it's a not-so-simple matter of shoehorning everything in there.

I'll have to weigh whether or not this will be more painful than the vendor kit route. With DIY, at least I'll control my own destiny (which could be a good or bad thing, since all my turbo-knowledge is book-learnin'...)

Rrrrghh... sometimes it makes me want to go out get something with an H-badge on the front...

Just kidding! Thanks again.

If you can find a vendor that will sell you a DIY kit, it will be easier to install.

Not changing the header, front crossmember, and waterpump saves a lot of effort.

However, I am not sure if there is a vendor supplying DIY kits that I would recommend doing business with.

I don't know if the old Minnam (not carmodifications.com, but the other guys) is still available, or what their current price is if it is. JCSports might supply you with a kit at their current price, but they are dishonest. Do not deal with them. ASR might supply you a kit at the current price. However, they appear to be dishonest, too. Same deal. B-Spec will only do custom kits, but will sell and ship the parts for your own install. Rallispec I think still only sells turbos that they install. iSR will install a turbo but don't think they have a DIY version available.

That really doesn't leave much choice except to truly do it yourself.

You will have to have some custom welding done at some point. Make friends with someone who can do it, because that will likely end up being the most expensive part of the kit.
