View Full Version : Ultimate Autocross Impreza (How would you build it?)
JJTheSubeDriver 06-24-2001, 11:47 PM Okay. Now time for me to dream. :) Let's say I wanted to make a really kick-ass autocross/rally/track car out of my Impreza. Meaning SM at the very least, maybe even going into the "real" mod classes. Here's what I would do:
Car: Use mine. :) Or get a bean-can to start with.
Engine Mods:
Can you say twin turbo h6? I can! How about a 2.2 twin turbo? How about a all-motor 2.5? A supercharged 2.5? A twin-turbo 2.5 with nitrous? Remember, I'm dreaming crazy here...
Fully programmable ECU and telemetry system.
Tranny/AWD System:
full dog box
change from viscous to mechanical LSD's front center and rear. Kaaz??
Suspension:
External reservoir coil-overs, triple adjustable, custom valved, etc, etc.
Camber/Castor plates front and rear, adjustable control arms.
Other:
Siyanara interior, ac, radio, dash, carpet, headliner, seats, unnessecary wiring (impreza going on a diet :D) Hello carbon-fiber hood, fenders, door panels (hell the entire car!)
Race seats/harnesses, full cage.
About 6-8 sets of wheels with appropriate tires for all possible racing conditions.
Cost: I don't know, maybe tens of thousands?? :D Of course, a sponsor to pay for this all would be nice too, but then that's really dreaming.
How about you? What would your dream race only impreza be made up of?
Realistically, I would have to say that I would be happy with Larry Ganz's turbo rs. What a nice set-up! But there is just something about a car that's not street legal that you have to tow it to the track.... :D
nqwan 06-24-2001, 11:54 PM uhhh...i'd just get a lot of money, call up prodive, order a wrc car and unrestrict it...i know its for rally and all, but heck, if i had the money i'd be autocrossing that thing to hell, just as long as i'm driving...hehehe
blaster88 06-25-2001, 08:03 AM I think the ultimate autocross Impreza would be in STS (better Pax than G Stock).
Get the DMS 50 suspension, a Cobb tuning intake, Stromung exhaust, Yokohama A032R's, and a TECII.
That's about $6k worth of stuff, and would be a lot more competitive than whatever you can spend in a mod or prepared class.
omahasubaru 06-25-2001, 09:33 AM I don't think you can run a TECII in STS, they allow Chips and piggyback units, but not a fully programable ECU.
blaster88 06-25-2001, 10:41 AM Electronic means to modify the engine management system are permitted by use of altered engine control computers and the installation of piggyback control devices such as VTEC Controllers and ignition controllers.
Sounds like TEC II would fall under this.
Warp3 06-25-2001, 10:53 AM They've been discussing stuff like this (electronics rules in STS) on the streettouring list lately (at Yahoo! Groups (was an eGroups list)). Basically what I'm hearing is future revisions of the rules will eliminate systems like the TEC-II from being allowed in STS.
Besides, I think you mean STR unless you want to rethink the Yoko A032Rs (80 treadlife, STS requires 140+). :)
kelley nelson 06-25-2001, 12:39 PM The TEC needs some non-stock sensors in order to work, it's not STS legal.
I'm with whoever said they'd like ot autocross a WRC. I've seen it on tight tarmac exhibitions and it looks pretty tossable. It's got that sequential gearbox too ;)
Spectre23 06-25-2001, 03:18 PM You couldn't run the A032R's in STS either. They are an R compound tire with a treadwear below 140. And those tires are nowhere near good enough for SM.
kelley nelson 06-25-2001, 05:58 PM I just assumed we were talking about building the fastest possible Impreza, irregardless of any classing concerns. (Quite possibly not even fitting into any mod classes)
blaster88 06-25-2001, 06:39 PM Okay, PolePosition S03's.
The question of ultimate autocross Impreza is different than the fastest Impreza you can imagine.
To me the ultimate would be the one that is most competitive. STS is probably the place where an Impreza is most likely to be a winning car with a good driver - in the prepared classes the wild Vettes etc are going to win. Sorry, that's just the way it is.
So max out the STS mods would be the way to go.
The ULTIMATE Impreza must be the Prodrive WRC car. Since we are spending imaginary money, the half million or so that would cost is no object. Not sure how it would fare on an autocross course, though.
wigglesxjr 06-25-2001, 11:22 PM Could anyone fill me in as to the differences between the WRC impreza and the SCCA PRORally version? As I understand it, they are mostly identical other than the fact that WRC regulations require them to wear a 34mm intake restrictor...if this is the case, shouldn't the PR incarnation of the Subaru rally car be theoretically more powerful?
nqwan 06-26-2001, 04:37 AM imagine autocrossing with the antilag system in the wrc car...
"hey buddy, your car is shooting fireballs out of its ass!!"
tom@kartboy 06-26-2001, 10:16 PM just buy my RS
it has everythig you just asked for :)
and it does kick ass in SM

Travis R 06-27-2001, 12:03 PM I think an Impreza would be very competitive in EP. The minimum weight requirements are 1.01 lbs per liter (before engine mods). So an AWD 2.2L car would only have to weigh 2222 lbs. I think weight control is critical in auto-x.
SM would be fun, but more expensive (to be competitive). And since when does a real race car have to have a back seat? ;)
adrian03 06-27-2001, 01:32 PM Tom, are there any Audi S4's running in SM in your region? How do you do against them?
The SM S4's in the SF region is killing everyone. And usually 2-5 seconds faster than all Imprezas on a 60 sec course.
Maybe we just need to learn how to drive? :p

#55 STR
Section 8 06-27-2001, 03:38 PM As I understand it, they are mostly identical other than the fact that WRC regulations require them to wear a 34mm intake restrictor...if this is the case, shouldn't the PR incarnation of the Subaru rally car be theoretically more powerful?
They could make it more powerful under the rules. I doubt that they did though. They basically brought the U.S.S. Misouri to a spitball fight, so I imaging that they stuck with what they already had, and are familure with. Maybe even detuned it a wee bit in key areas for reliability. Though I doubt that too.

There...that should about do it...:) :) :) Hey I can dream too..
if your only gonna auto-x it... you wouldn't want the cage.. less weight
Greg Sharpe 07-02-2001, 05:33 AM Yeah, the cage may add a bit too much taste for some people's class of choice. So instead, lets strip it down and seam weld the sucker! While we're at it, why not use some 22B bosy pieces? I like the addition of carbon fiber panels, nice ricey/functional blend there.
Gonna need an adjustable center diff too. Philly region SCCA people will remember watching the 22B dance around in the rain at one particular autoX. The fellow driving it that day made adjustments to the center diff to suit the wet/dry conditions of the day. It was cool.
Air to water intercooler, only for the drag/autoX version. Fill it up with ice water and enjoy the added efficiency.
Gotta get rid of the bump steer too.
Oooooh, and use fender exit exhaust like some GNs & TTAs!!!!
Gosh, dreaming is fun.
go go go 07-02-2001, 05:53 AM How about this? This is Dirt Trial car but I think it'll do well in AutoX, too.
