I want to take a notebook and read the standard engine diags from the ECU on the car.... Where is the RS232 connection for the 2002 Impreza 2.5RS?

If you mean the ALDL (assembly line diagnostic link) to hook up a scan tool, I'm not 100% sure. I believe it's somewhere under the dash on the driver's side.

There are software/cable packages that allow a PC with a serial port to act as a fully featured scan tool, but the port on the car is not a standard RS232 asynchronous serial port.

It's an ODBII port located under the steering wheel. Just sit on the ground on the drivers side and look up under the steering column...you'll see it. It may have a little 2.5" x 0.75" cover on it. You'll need an ODBII to RS232 adapter. It's not a standard RS232 port.
