jblaine 10-27-2004, 02:26 PM So, you got STI to make the speedo gear for you?
STI likely doesn't make the gears or the speedo gears. The speedo gears are plastic, so it's probably a plastic fabrication company. :)
jblaine 10-27-2004, 03:03 PM Yeah, I was just trying to figure out the "OEM" wording.
Gruppe-S 10-27-2004, 04:18 PM Jblaine, dwx - Actually Fuji (Subaru) contracts out many of their components to various factories in their "automotive group" throughout asia. For example the post-production RA gears (since the car is no longer in production) is manufactured by a smaller factory in Japan (hence the crazy back orders!). The speedo gear is made by another, and actually does require special equipment and experience to manufacture (it's not really plastic). :)
Cheers,
Gary

jblaine 10-27-2004, 04:23 PM Now, the ultimate question is: Given 4 months, digital camera, and a budget of about $200 for tools, how hard would this be to install in a spare 5MT (by oneself)?
Gruppe-S 10-27-2004, 07:54 PM I actually wouldn't recommend doing it yourself unless you are fairly experienced in the rebuild. We do not do the rebuild inhouse, we contract it out to a transmission specialist as they have both the expertise as well as a transmission dyno to ensure proper operation. They also offer 1 month warranty for it.
Of course, I'm not a transmission specialist by any means, but I think the main problem is ensuring tolerance of the gears. You can buy a Subaru manual which will offer you the specs on how to do the rebuild, but depending on your experience, you may or may not want to attempt this yourself. :)
Cheers,
Gary

jblaine 10-27-2004, 08:15 PM Thanks Gary. Makes sense to me. Bummer though.
shukes24 10-27-2004, 08:51 PM looks like i missed out, which is fine since I won't install until next year :)
thanks for the deal guys! mine will be arriving in the next batch in 2 weeks :D
now just need to find a trans case
TrizzyDizzy 10-29-2004, 12:53 AM both sets sold?
Rizzo314 10-31-2004, 02:52 AM Do you have any sets left. I am really in the market for some new gears and this is what I am looking for.

bluerex1564 11-02-2004, 04:52 PM How much would it cost to have you install the gearset?
ebeck 11-02-2004, 08:50 PM Dealers charge about $500 to install if you dring the GB to them.
BrianH 11-02-2004, 10:05 PM while you're it is suggested you upgrade other stuff as well, synchros, bearings. Tack on a few hundred more dollars for all that. Also if your trans grenaded itself there could be other stuff damaged by the particles floating around in there.

Also, from what I've read is that you want a professional shop doing this. Even small specs of dust landing into the tranny can ruin it when rebuilding.
TrizzyDizzy 11-03-2004, 12:25 AM any more sets in gruppe-s? If theres a list, please put me on it:
