Hooray. Sticky pleeeeease :) (The other rallyx thread was for "recruiting")

The Winter Woolies RallyCross, the second RallyCross sanctioned by the Arctic Alaska Region, will be at the Alaska State Fairgrounds on Saturday, November 13th. The Stewards of Rally request your ONLINE registration BY Monday, November 8th--this means you must NOT procrastinate--SIGN UP TODAY!

Early registration is available online and its discount expires at 8PM on the 3rd of November. Fees are $30 for SCCA members and $40 for our fellow RallyCross enthusiasts. For those who are not willing to register online, you may call Cheryl at 243-2122 to register PRIOR to 8PM on Wednesday, November 3rd to receive the $10 early registration savings.

Registration after the 3rd, is at the full registration fees of $40 and $50. These fees apply through the registration open at the event site, which is 10:00AM-10:30AM.

With winter looming, all competitors will need to bring boots, jackets, and mittens--you'll be working corners when you are not running the RallyCross. Come PREPARED to be out-in-the-cold!

Classes are 2WD Stock, 2WD Modified, 4WD Stock and 4WD Modified. DOT approved studded tires will be allowed, and approval is at discretion of the Stewards of Rally. Do NOT over-stud tires and think it will be OK! No rally tires will be allowed.

No plans are being made at this time for meals to be provided the competitors.

A reminder that all vehicles must be muffled and are subject to approval to the Stewards of Rally. As well, all attending under the age of 18--as a competitor or guest at the event--must have an SCCA minor waiver signed by both parents.

The registration form has been uploaded to this site. Please download it (you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is free from adobe.com), fill it out completely, and have it postmarked not later than November 3rd to receive the early registration discount. We APPRECIATE all who send in their registrations after the discount deadline--we need to plan on the attendance for pit area, timing, and other "ext

Must be nice to have that "Pull ebrake disengage rear wheels" option :furious:

I'm going to try and con my rich parents into buying me some studded tires. It'll be hard to be competitive if i don't.

Of course :p That'll make just that much funner. Hopefully the course designer widens the gates a lot to compensate for snow.

:\ If you know anyone that would remotely want to give rally-x a try, tell them to hit me or cheryl up.

Guys, out of the 50 (guesstimate number) AKIC members who own a Subaru, only 2 have registered.

Like I said, for having the perfect vehicle for this, that's a very sad number.

If you're worried about ruining your car, go slow, take it easy, learn how the track is. It's pretty amazing to me that more people Auto-X their subaru's than Rally-X.

So if you guys know anyone who would have any remote interest in rallycrossing, please let them know. This is absolutely my favorite sport, and it would be sad to watch it not be offered anymore due to not enough participation. I know a bunch of us watch the WRC and are absolutely fascinated by it. Rally-X allows us all to see what it's like, to a small degree.

Thanks a lot Craig for registering!

So, for some motivation, here's a couple pictures from the last one and I may have a video up in a bit.

PS: Don't laugh to hard at the beeping, there was bump in the middle of a turn that basically made you jump out of your seat, and since all of the steering wheel is basically a horn, I hit it several itmes.

I will be disconnecting them this time :furious:

Also, this shows how gentle rallyx is on a car if you're somewhat modest with your power like I was.

i really want to give this a try,i havent registered online yet cause i was wanting alittle more info.do the cars run the course 1 at a time? if so are we just racing against other drivers times? what constutes the moddified class vs stock? i think the biggest reason people are not wanting to run there cars is the same reason im slightly hesitant, rock damage to the car.i know the fairground dirt pretty well from racing motocross there severel times over the years and im pretty sure its not filled with big rocks and seems like a pretty fine dirt.if anyone that raced there car there recently can confirm the dirt conditions would be helpful.
im about 95% sure i will race as of now,i may have to sign up later due to cash flow this week though.

I also wonder about the modified vs stock issue. My mods are modest:
WRX rims and hankooks.
Aftermarket panel filter.

I thought I saw in the SCCA rules something about non-stock rims bumping you into "modified" class, can anyone confirm this?
Or, Jax, what bumps you into the modified class?

Couldn't see the "Horn Video" - -will try again later.

I was going to swap my brakes that weekend, but it looks fun. So, I'll do the brakes over Thanksgiving. :)

(Anyone who makes fun of my car gets a flaming bag of poo outside their door) ;)

I think running in the winter you will be fine, it should just be snow and ice you are running on, should not be much worse than driving around on Anchorage roads. :D

The main plus to an event like this is you get to see how your car handles in the snow in a safe and controlled environment. I will be looking forward to the next event.

do the cars run the course 1 at a time?

Yes, just like in the video I posted. 1 car goes, finishes, another one starts.

if so are we just racing against other drivers times?
Yes. I do beleive there are going to be a minimum for 4 runs, with 1 run (the lowest) being thrown out. I don't expect it to be disgustingly competitive, so don't worry about that.

what constutes the moddified class vs stock?

You know, I don't remember the specificities there. You might try e-mailing or calling Cheryl Babbe. I just know that my car is in the modified.

It's pretty easygoing on the cars. Since so much snow is coming down, we might not even see dirt! But yeah, the first rally-x came and went and my car looked the exact same.

Handbraking, I would think, is the slow way around a corner. The only way I could see a person using the handbrake and gaining time is if it was Jake:lol:, or they had a WRC style handbrake (i.e. one that is really easily accessible on a moments notice, unlike ours. I'm talking right next to the wheel). I could be very wrong, and I'm writing this pertaining to a snowy course. Gravel could be a different story since it's a lot grippier. On shallow turns, I would think a good amount of oversteer would be faster. On hairpin turns, it's a toss up. If the conditions and course structure allow for creating oversteer (i.e. really wide gates around a hairpin) I would think oversteer would be faster.

But as for ebrake drifting, I'm pretty sure the stewards would get pretty pissed if people goofed around. It might be a good question to pose to them though. Getting sideways, I'm sure we'll all be getting pretty sideways

Screw the e-break, power drift thru it, that is if you can go fast enough to do it yet maintain grip.

if i understand this right if your dccd is in manual position (lets say lock) for ripping down a straghit section then when you get to a tight turn your front wheels wont want to let you around a corner so you grab the e brake to get the back around and the dccd goes back to a auto mode allowing some slippage to the front wheels for tight cornering and then releasing the e brake you go back to your previous selected manual mode (lock).
if im wrong please let me know, its kind of vague in the owners manual.

If anything you should be more likely to do it now. Snow is most definitely harder to learn on, gravel gives you a lot more to work with and is a lot more forgiving with mistakes.

I don't really think you're going to need an ebrake or messing with the DCCD system while rallying. It has enough power as it is. Just use the Faint technique with the DCCD set a couple notches below 50/50. You want more power to the rear to kick the ass out anyway. Just my experience

Just read some of the posts above and wanted to confirm that WINTER WOOLIES RALLYCROSS is happening on Saturday the 13th.

The Stewards had received a call of "standing water" and "gooey" so two of them took time-off to go north today and check-it-out! The report is that it is just like our summer event and we'll be competing on the GRASS (not gravel). There appears to be good Matanuska black dirt under the grass. There is a small "puddle" which may become a "water hazzard" on the course--or not, depending on the course layout. And, there are some patches of snow (well, at least today).

A reminder to all competitors--dress warm! Please be at the site NOT later than 9:30AM to ready your vehicle for tech inspection.

Not sure who posted complaint of no snow--geez, last month we had NO EVENT! And, because of no snow--they are choosing NOT to support the event? YIKES!

Basically, go to palmer. You'll see "Inner Springer Loop" road signs. There will be two of them, they might say inner or outer, who cares. Anyway, you'll pass one of the springer loop's, don't turn on that one. I did last time and got VERY lost. The 2nd springer loop is what you'll turn on. You'll go down a road and on your right you should see the rally-x area. You'll see a huge barn type thing, and the grandstands and a huge open lot full of nothing. If you go past taco bell, you've gone too far. Here's a map I just did.

Well that's all I was saying, bro.

You don't want to use the E-brake or the "Auto" function because it'll shift power from left to right and from front to back. That's why you have more power to the rear going all the time when you're trying to stay sideways. You don't want to put your drift into the hands of a computer anyway.

Alright, here's my writeup since I'm finally at home. I fell asleep at my brothers in wasilla RIGHT after the race.

Anyway, compared to the last rally-x this was AWESOME. The course was almost 3 times as long, MUCH faster turns, straightaways, etc. The course didn't change at all compared to the last one. Some have said that the course got better through the day, some say it got worse. What I will say is that the two "snow corners" got EXTREMELY bad throughout the day. Every single time I tried to go through it I got horrible understeer and barely made it out. But, the course did get better in the fact that the grass got pushed down so you could see a little better, but with that came a little bit more slippery surface, which may or may not have been better depending on driving styles. The course really was great, I liked the fact that you drive the track around and back again.

SQUAD_907 was the man to beat after the first group drove. I was amazed at his times considering this was his first rally-x. He totally owned his STi through a lot of the corners, making it look like he'd done it all before. I was expecting Jake or Kent to have the fastest time, even though they were in the FWD neon, but Squad owned.

The 2nd group, comprised of myself, Kent, Jerry, Craig, Hirevn, and GT-Jilly's husband was pretty competitive. My first run, 119 seconds, was horrible. I looked up and saw that I was in the latter part of the pack. I saw Jerry's time and was happy, 126 seconds. Craig looked really fluid out there and his car sounded awesome. 2nd run came through and I saw that my time had dropped 7 seconds, and then I saw Jerry's and he was .1 seconds faster. 3rd run came through, and I set the fastest time for the day, 110 seconds. 4th run, I hit a cone and gave up, figuring that we had 4 more runs to do, I'd just let that one be the one I dropped. In hindsight that was a big mistake since we didn't get to run those, but such is life. I get done, and see that Jerry sets the fastest time for the day with 107 seconds, a full 3 seconds faster than my 2nd fastest time for the day.

GT-Jilly's husband, although not getting any of the fastest times for the day, was VERY consistent. He basically got 4 112 second runs. I'm pretty sure that gave him the win overall, but the times haven't been released yet. My brother, who was filming, was positive that he had the fastest time of the day. When I got to my brothers I watched the video before going to sleep. He was definitely the most skilled. His club/pro rally skills were obvious when he would brake just enough and give just enough gas to really get the car sideways and around corners. Although his pro/club rally car was FWD, you could tell that he knew what the hell he was doing.

Props to hirevn and AKOBS for putting down some impressive times in their first every rallyX.

I do beleive the standings put Derek in first and Jerry in second, but we won't know officially for a couple days.

Anyway, enough with the talk, here's a couple pictures.

I just called, they are having problems with the spreadsheet with the times. They are going to recount them and make sure they are correct before posting them up.

Alright, well, the times came in. And like I figured, Jerry had the fastest time, followed by me, and then derek. Pretty cool considering last time the 2wd guys had the fastest times, this time AWD owned it up.

In 4WD Modified, Jerry won with a cumulative time of 333.429 seconds, 2nd was Derek with 338.978, 3rd was me with 342.308, 4th was Craig with 352.215, and 5th was hirevn with 382.667.

In 4WD stock, Mr. Squad_907 took first with 343.924, 2nd was AKOBS with 347.007, 3rd was Marc Whinery with 360.467, and 4th was Jeff Lynn who broke a hub on his exploder with 736.542.

So basically, when combining the two (4wd stock and mod) it was:

00Maddog - 333.429
Derek - 338.978
eurojax - 342.308
Squad_907 - 343.924
AKOBS - 347.007
Kiwi_Fella - 352.215
Marc Whinery - 360.467
hirevn - 382.667

And then, fastest time it went:

00Maddog - 107.027
eurojax - 110.813
Derek - 110.872
Squad_907 - 111.968

Pretty awesome.
