View Full Version : Turbo recommendation on EJ22T build-up
jpmarotta 10-28-2004, 10:47 AM Winter project: building a 2.4L from a stripped EJ2.2T block. Engine will be mated to a ver6 STi (not RA) built 5sp.
Been watching the 2.5L forum for a good closed circuit road course turbo, but most all the threads are based on drag-racing.
Application requirement is early and wide torque band and a HP sweet spot between 4500 -> 7K. Planning for ver7 heads with ver8 valvetrain, so redline will be around 7500. Looking for a target 320 -> 350 WHP.
Any an all feedback is appreciated.
Thanks,
Jason

Go with the green if you want top end power, the 18G will be extremely responsive, you may want to consider a 20G as well. 18G is capable of making the power you want, a green will make more like 380whp or more depending on your setup. I've never actually had a ride in a 18G'd or FP green'd car. I've seen Dyno sheets and dyno runs from both. All the greens I have seen were on STI's. Since people have run 18G's on the 2.0L US EJ20 I think it's safe to say it would spool very well. FIS in Texas has done some cars with a 2.5L and an 18G, they spool very well. A 20G might be a great middle of the road choice, But the green, from everything I've read, is just a great turbo. Everybody seems to like them, and I saw it spool to full boost by 3500 or so RPM on the dyno in an STI.

You're not hard to please. If you want power from 4500 and up you could go as big as a gt35R. You'll be happy with an 18g though, 320 all day long and will have a huge powerband (in comparison to the 35R :D )

Well, car is also a daily driver, so I'm opting for pump(93) gas and good, balanced, usable power. I also want the thing to be relatively reliable.
Just wondering if the 18G will on it's face on top since it's going to be a 2.4L?

Yes...
A green wouldn't, but then your talking much more lag. You could only run it at 320whp, but it's out of it efficiency there. At 320whp the 18g will be faster just because of the powerband and responsiveness. IF you get a green you know that you will also up the boost. This is where the tranny/diff/motor etc. start to get into trouble.
If you really only want 320, there is no need to get a bigger turbo than the 18g. You'll just get more lag and less responsiveness.
The nice thing about the mitsu turbos is you can start with an 18g...get your car sorted, tuned, and drive that setup for a while, then for a few hundred bucks you can go green later if you find out the 18g is too small.
Either way you can't really go wrong with either of those.
For 320whp you could also look at the 1820/sr40.
If you're considering the green take a look at the sr50/sr55/AVO500.
IMO though, i'd only put an 1820, 18g, Green on my car. (Well, UR stg5 kit, but let's be realistic:D) Maybe an sr55 with a few more positive results, but those three are so proven...you know what to expect and what you'll get.
totoherbs 10-29-2004, 04:49 AM Ya I think the 18g would fit you nicely. Something like a ported and coated large 18g from deadbolt. It will be very responsiveness which is more important then overall power in a daily driver. If you want even more look into a gt30-10 or a superzilla.
nativo 10-30-2004, 11:41 PM The kit you and I are looking for is the GP Moto GT32 kit. We've already ordered and based on what we've found out is going to be a killer kit on the track. We are building a GC8 with an STI v7 spec-C 6sp, 2.333L Motor with STI v8 heads with Brembos and the R-180 STI rear Diff. We are aming at the road racing/SOLO I/Track Days kind of set up and we are convinced that this kit will do just perfect.
Good luck

Homemade WRX 10-31-2004, 01:07 AM I don't know much on the 30R but would go with either the green or the 18G, the 18g will be more responsive but not as powerful

Ya... um its nice kit for like $5 or 7k? A gt32 by it self goes for $799(now you will need to have a new set of pipes made and run new lines... but thats not $2ks worth) and info on the kit is harder to come by then pulling teeth. They use a front mount/radiator combo... but still have yet to show pics or talk about the specs. Its a good turbo as respocive as something like a 20G but a whole lot meaner. But its a 400+hp turbo and, by what he said, hes not looking for that... Its also not going to like the 5 speed he wants to use.
