View Full Version : 97 OBS w/rear drums to all discs??? mybluesubi 10-28-2004, 09:10 PM ok, I have a MY97 OBS with rear drums and wanna convert to rear discs and possibly get bigger discs in the front. USe it! simpreza2 10-29-2004, 06:26 PM WRX front calipers should bolt up for the front. I got some used with rotors and pads for $250 for my 96 OBS. Dont know about the rear, my OBS came with all disc. The only year too, luck me. :disco: cooparu 10-29-2004, 06:42 PM I have a 97 OBS, and will soon be doing the conversion. I got the complete brakes off of a 03 WRX. Now that I have larger rims, I can get to it. Have you seen this? http://wac.addr.com/auto/obs/disc/disc.html G.Subramaniam 10-30-2004, 05:40 PM Ion Performance, a vendor on Nasioc sells a kit for drum to disc conversion speedyHAM 11-01-2004, 07:00 PM Just about all subaru rear discs will bolt right up. I have done this swap using '90 legacy rears, '03 WRX rears, and '99 RS rears. Pretty much whatever you can find wil work- search the private for sale section and you can usually find a good deal or two. mybluesubi 11-01-2004, 08:07 PM So I can just go to a "junk" yard and get the rears off a legacy or impreza? I do hope 18's are big enough for the swap ;) Do you think they brake lines from the drums will fit the discs? I'd hate to think that the SS brake lines I just ordered would be a waste for the back. simpreza2 11-01-2004, 11:21 PM So I can just go to a "junk" yard and get the rears off a legacy or impreza? Your going to need to return the ss lines. When I ordered mine for my 96 OBS with 4 wheel disc, they had it messed up in the computer b/c 96 was the only year it came with all disc, they sent me a "regular" disc/drum kit and the fittings are different for dics and drum brakes. cjfike 11-01-2004, 11:29 PM I just did this swap. And yes using older parts do just bolt up but there are pitfalls that may hold up the car for a couple of days. You will need to buy brake lines for the RS of the year OBS you have. If you don't have 1) some kind of impact hammer get an electric one. 2) a spare set of bushings for the rearmost latteral arms (unless you are replacing them). Lots of liquid wrench. You need to get the hubs in the (knuckles) axle housing also. If you want the Subaru manual on the removal and reassembly on this send me a PM. Also check the method the E-Brake cables attach to your current back plates and make sure the swap-ins attach the same. E-Brake cables are very cheap for the OBS and older imprezza's if you can find them. Legacy cables are going to be too long possibly. Make sure you check if they hit the drive shaft where they bend 90 degress and enter the passenger compartment if you change them. There is a mod guide on this on this site somewhere or used to be. Do yourself a favor though and get 02 or newer WRX parts. linsavy 11-03-2004, 10:07 AM If you want to go whole hog. There was a complete R180 lsd with knuckles and 2 pot discs for sale in the forums. Only $1800 and it has a 3.90 rear end, just like your car. G.Subramaniam 11-03-2004, 11:01 PM Ion performance sold me a slightly used drum-disc kit for my 1997 impreza for around $750 |
