Hey does anybody know if this gauge cluster is plug-n-play? They have the same 3 green connectors on the top but will everything work the same? (Check engine lights, blinkers, abs light, etc....)

Also is there any difference in the JDM STi Type-R Cluster vs. the JDM STi Cluster? All I can see is it has a silver face rather than white.

wouldn't see why there would be a difference, the Type-R is mearly a two door.

depends on the year of both cars some are plug and play others are not

Could you plug a v6 cluster into a v7 ecu?

Jaxx
10-29-2004, 03:45 PM
with considerable re wireing/re pinning

plug no

so if you wanted a v7 engine in a v6, you think it would be better just to wire it up to a v6 ecu?

Its possible if you feel you have the knowledge and know how. I have a ver 2 with a ver 7 engine. The wiring harness is from the Ver 2 but I use a Ver 2 power FC!!!

The type R/RA cluster will have the DCCD display, the regular STi wont. There are also brushed blue aluminum clusters out of the Limited cars. They look pretty cool.

I like that UK WRX cluster.

The 2 clusters have the same wire harness connections. Is there any chance that they would have different pin outs?

Jaxx

yes they will

for example a 2000 rs has a differnt pin out than a 2001 rs

suposdly a v.6 cluster will plug in to a 01 rs

either way, re-pinning a connector isn't that difficult is it? Just get the wiring diagrams from both cars and swap them over to the correct locations. Then, while your at it, you might as well get one of those "little black boxes" that converts KPH to MPH so that you can use your speedo...

Dam that sucks. I guess I will just re-wire it then. Anybody know where I can get the pin outs for the type-R cluster? Its a 1998.

there are others that do speedo correction and other stuff, but this was the first one i found in a search.

What would a 1998 STi Type-R be,(Wiring wise), a Version 5?

YaZahX
10-31-2004, 08:55 PM
the version 5 uses totally different plugs from the version 4...
IF somone wants me to repin a 5 somone has to lend me the 5 cluster-(i have the 99 cluster and wiring at my disposal if needed)

I dont think I've got a clear enough answer for my retarded self.
Simple form:
How Can I get a 1998 STi Type-R cluster into my 2001 2.5RS?

Lachlan

Plug it in. if it works, you're good to go! If it doesn't, you'll have to rewire the harness. I assume you already have it?

Look under modifications->interior. He gives a write-up of putting a ver 6 cluster in an RS. Apparently, he had to have Cobb Tuning modify his cluster to work. I assume that means rewire the harness or something like that.

I have a version 6 cluster at home and it works in my 01 RS, kind of. The lights and everything work but the speedo and tach dont move smoothly. They kind of bounce their way around the guage. And I cant seem to fill my intercooler sprayer bottle.

That usually means someone took off the needles, and put them back in wrong. I bet if you took it off, and pulled the needles up a little bit, they would smooth out. When your car is at an idle, is the RPM's and Speed in the right spot? (Zero MPH/750Rpm's)

not always- this has been reported before with other peoiple who have done the swap

Yeah but usually when a cluster needle wants to bounce around like that, only 1 goes bad. Either the speedo or tach. He says both are bad so that tells me its probably been tampered with.

UPDATE- I recieved the cluster today and I got screwed. It is not the right one. It doesn't have the same green plugs on the top. I even asked the guy if it had the 3 green plugs on the top to make sure and he said it did. This is the second time I got screwed by someone trying to sell me an older model STi cluster. Now that I got it, its a STi Type-R Version 4 cluster. I thought it was going to be a Version 5.

Well, if anyone is in the opposite situation as me, (Older Impreza w/ Newer STi cluster) Let me know and maybe we can trade. (JDMimpreza@msn.com)

You didn't get screwed. You can still sell it again.

If its a v4, I might be interested. Send me pics: james.white (-at-) uconn.edu

I will send pics in a couple days. I have to borrow a camera.

Will A Version 4 cluster fit a 1998 Impreza L?

YaZahX

told ya it was a v4 :)

the cluster should fit the 98 l(that was the year of the dash change) BUT u have to repin the cluster harness look at my write up for info

Yeah you were right but it was already in the mail by the time you told me. Oh well.
