View Full Version : Who has the higher dyno #'s
CitySubie 10-29-2004, 03:00 PM Let's try to ignore the difference in different dyno readings for this comparison.
A stock 2002+ WRX or a stock 2002+ RS with a WRX engine(EJ20) swap.
I want to know what kind of power is going to the wheels. The EJ20 has 227CHP, but how does the difference in drivetrain, gear ratio, etc. effect the overall WHP outcome?
DuoMaxwell 10-29-2004, 04:19 PM Me and unless you go with a 2.8 you will never catch me!!!!!
j/k

They will put down the same numbers.
On our Mustang Dyno:
02 wrx stage 2 ~230 whp
01 RS Hybrid (02 wrx motor swap, RS trans) stage 2 230whp
I realize the example is slightly different from your question, but the point is that if the dyno is set up properly, they will read similarly.

yeah same power
with the same setup they will read slightly differntly due to the rs having lower gearing
Homemade WRX 10-31-2004, 01:27 AM yeah same power

do you know what kind of loss our old drivetrains have?...just wondering

Slightly different in who's favor? I read in this forum many times that the lower gearing gives the advantage to the RS drivetrain. If so, can someone explain how and when (maybe in a certain gear, perhaps)?
pezman04wrx 11-03-2004, 12:24 PM Kinda depends on alot, but in basic terms I guess ... If you looked at a quarter mile run, and the WRX has to shift into 4th gear at th end, if the RS because of it's gearing could stay in 3rd gear it might take the WRX simply because of one less shift ... But who knows, if the RS had the WRX engine setup, technically it's the same car, just slightly different gears, very slight ... In all honesty, there's likely no difference when all is said and done ...
RyansJDMgc8 11-03-2004, 08:03 PM My RS is well into 4th gear in a quarter mile. A WRX is either about to redline 3rd or just shifted into 4th in a quarter mile.
The RS would show more horsepower with the wrx motor, not only due to the gearing, but the weight difference.
YaZahX 11-03-2004, 08:45 PM what does weight have to do with horsepower??
the power should be the same, because when u do a dyno run u are supposed to enter into the dyno computer what the gear ratio is of the gear u are doing the pull in, most people dont do that...
BHawk 11-03-2004, 09:21 PM Well the 01 and prior RS was a lighter car correct?

Some dynos react differently to weight so it effects the dyno reading. Not that dyno reading should matter that much as they are tuning tools not bragging caculators.

Simply put the better gearing means more of the torque gets to the ground. More deeply put...

Hello. 2002+ imprezas. The body/weight is the same, except the hood.
