View Full Version : How do you drive coil over plugs?

The coil over plug affair on a V7/V8 has 2 wires and presumably the ground bolt that screws into the cylinder head. I'm wondering if these are smart coils or just dumb windings and how to drive them with a haltech. They're @#$# expensive and time/costwise I can't afford to cook them.

Not all of them are the same - some are direct drive from the ECU and some are fired by an ignitor.

I think that the 02 WRX is a direct-drive, but is a three-wire system. The ones you describe (if it has the copper bung), are the ones fired by an external ignitor that is then triggered by the ECU.

If you can post a pic, that would be helpful.

I've found that these things are just plain coils in need of an ignitor. So I sat down and designed a simple ignitor circuit and they make sparks. :)
