I have recently blown my motor (rod bearings). I have been running a bit more boost (18psi w/AVCR) with forged pistons, upgraded fuel pump, adjustable FPR, catless exhaust, FCD, stock ECU. I don't know if I blow the bearings from det or just bad oil or a combination of both.
I live in Argentina and the only practical tuning solution is the UTEC (AU version). I'm planning on getting a Utec with the turner, as I will have to tune it by myself.
I'm a bit short of cash by now after paying for the rebuilt and I'm thinking on getting one product at a time.
What should I get first?
Many people have used the Utec alone, just loading the staged maps with no problem. Is this a "safe" option? Is the Utec datalogging and knock detection enogh for tuning?
Getting the Tuna first do nothing for the car performance but is always nice to know how you are running and if knocking is present. I could still "play" a bit with boost and fuel pressure if I know my AFRs until I could get my hand on the UTEC. (I have boost and Egt gauges)
What do you think?

Well.... the tuna will just tell you if you have a problem from fueling or knock. Kinda moot without the means of correcting for it.

So honestly, if you're going to get one, get both.

This will once again allow you to monitor both fueling/internal conditions, but do NOTHING to change them.

ie. add fuel if you are running leaning, cut timing if you see knock.

You dont need a tuna - but you need access to a wideband to do your tuning - (unless you have a lof of experience and know how to read spark plugs)

This is why I asked the first question. As Jorge has said, getting both is the right thing. I have no "practical" access to a WB, then I prefer to get the tuna. I am running an EBC. This is why I thought that getting the tuna first could be a nice way of monitoring the car AFRs and knock with the increased boost.

imo, if you know you're going to get both, get the tuner first. hook it up, run on it for a while, get it configured to read rpm...

i am working on a small circuit to adapt the tuner pro's additional analog logging input to a thermocouple, so that you can read egts, intake temps, oil temps, coolant temps, etc. if you're handy with a soldering iron, we're talking about 20 USD worth of parts for the electrical portion.

having the tuner hooked up will let you play with the wideband afr logging, and the built-in knock sensor amplifier will allow you to listen to how your engine sounds. getting the tuner first and using it to collect baseline information before you start tweaking isn't a bad thing. no one has EVER broken their engine from using a tuner without a utec, but PLENTY have the other way around! :lol:

imo, the txs basemaps are so generic they are useless, at least in terms of fueling. you might as well just run "normal" (ie non open loop) fueling and let the oem ecu control things, set your offsets to zero, and leave the utec out of it if you don't have a way of tuning fuel yourself... and as you know without a wideband you're shooting in the dark.

i would spend the money and get the tuner _pro_, btw. the extra analog and digital inputs along with the detcans makes it more than worth it for me.
