I notice i odnt see any pistons avalible for the EJ22E...NA open deck with the stock SOHC heads...

G.Subramaniam - you may also want to check out TWE for pistons. They may have something that'll work for your EJ22

WJM - Do you have the single port or dual port heads on your EJ22?

ej22 heads should be single output.

Are high CR pistons with camwork enough or do pistons need head port and polish too ?

Boost-Free Subee-not all EJ22's had a single port. The 90-94 Legacy's w/ the EJ22 had dual port. Some EJ18's were dual port. The phase 2 SOHC EJ22's were dual port.

G.Subramaniam - If you want to make the most power possible, do the high CR pistons, cams and headwork (PnP etc). You could always increase your bore to 99.5 or 100mm so you get slightly more then 2.2L while keeping your 75mm stroke. If you plan on revving yoru motor; get some forged rods too. Less rotating mass = less frictional losses as well. This means more of the engine from the combustion process will be used to power the car.

i might end up getting a single port engine...but I have a dual port EJ22E sitting around with bad bearings. I will use those dual port heads.

Cost impact seems that Camwork by delta cams is probably the cheapest
I was told that labor cost for upgrading pistons is $1500
and my local technician told me that headwork only improves high end rpm performance
Will the pistons still be effective if headwork is not done

Yes. It will improve power output throughout the entire rev range.

Is labor cost for piston swap really $1500?
It may be cheaper to swap in a 2.5L

G.Subramaniam- Properly done headwork will yield results throughout the entire rpm. It really depends on what you're looking for in terms of gains. There's particular headwork for different applications. Having an optimized combustion chamber for N/A is different then for Turbo apps.

Yes, increasing CR will improve power throughout the entire rev range. It should also improve fuel efficiency.

Swapping pistons is quite involved. You'll have to remove the engine from the car anyways to do this easily. And when the engine is out, the heads need to come off. You could get a pre-built EJ25 short block and use your SOHC heads; however when you do this, you might as well upgrade yourself to the Phase 2 EJ25 and give yourself more options interms of power gains.

At least you'd bump from 137hp -> 165hp crank by the swap over.

If you've got the phase 2 heads, there are more cam options. There is also more aftermarket support in general.
