View Full Version : Transmission Gurus....lend me your knowledge!
Unabomber 11-02-2004, 11:22 PM I'm currently in the working state of a Transmission Upgrade FAQ. Since I have only been haunting/searching this forum for 2-3 weeks, I'd like the advice/opinions of those that frequently hang out here.
This FAQ will be catered to 5MT WRX upgrades either to synchromesh (a lot of info) or dogbox (little info). I plan on touching on diffs and rear ends as well as 6MT conversions. I don't plan on touching flywheels or clutches other than a standard "It's a good time to upgrade/swap them out since the tranny is out anyway" statement.
Are there any common questions about manual transmission upgrades?
Any common diff questions?
Any common rear end questions?
Anything else you think I should touch on related that I have missed or should just try to cover?
This is one really tough FAQ for me and I'd like some help if anyone has some for me. Links would be wonderful too! :)
Ron
***EDIT***
I have started the FAQ, for a sneak peek:

This forum is controlled by me and is where I am working on it until I feel it is ready for NASIOC. Please feel free to offer any assistance on that forum (you can post without a usermane/log in there :) ) or on this thread. Remember this FAQ is about accuracy, so feel free to drop a dime on me if I have my facts wrong. Also feel free to add anything I have missed so far, even if you think it's an obvious item that will be added later.
Trunk_Monkey 11-02-2004, 11:27 PM Has been covered somewhere but "do you need to get the STi rear diff when you do a 6mt conversion?"
I'll think about it and try to help you out.
BTW, you need a theme song...

Trunk_Monkey 11-03-2004, 05:06 PM The gold mine for dogbox info....

Some more dogbox info:

A thread related...

Is it just an upgrade FAQ or some "how stuff works" in there?
For general how transmissions work...
MT:

AT:

Seq-Shift:

Diffs:

Probably not that useful but worth a shot:

Unabomber 11-03-2004, 05:15 PM Thanks for the additional links. I've taken to including howstuffworks.com articles in my faqs as well, so I will include those. I will also be including the official Subaru "howstuffworks" websites as well, as some of the offical Subaru and Subaru Global sites have cool tutorials.
I look forward to a fun filled evening researching transmissions tonight. My Battlefield 1942 Desert Combat skills are declining..... :(
Trunk_Monkey 11-03-2004, 08:23 PM You have got to be the single most knowledgable person on subarus in the planet, I mean you researched everything, thats soo cool. I am also looking forward to the clutch-flywheel FAQ... :D
blubaru 11-04-2004, 12:15 PM How about 5mt conversions(Forester XT or Legacy GT)? Any info on these yet?
Unabomber 11-04-2004, 06:16 PM Thanks for the props. I'm only about 1/3 the done with this FAQ and will probably need to take a "transmission break" before I tackle clutches and flywheels. :)
As to coversions....I have no clue. Maybe I'll find something in my research, otherwise, you have to ask in a seperate thread. To my knowledge, there is no upgrades for those yet. :(

Trunk_Monkey 11-07-2004, 06:35 PM Might want to lightly elaborate on what syncros are...
I dont think you want to say sti ra set, then people will think 6 speed.
Idiosyncrasies =
1. A structural or behavioral characteristic peculiar to an individual or group.
2. A physiological or temperamental peculiarity.
3. An unusual individual reaction to food or a drug.
Expand dog box definition, as in what dog engagement is.
Maybe links to vendors for gearsets?
I personally know its a hassle to click a buncha links so if there is only a little information on some site, just stick it in the FAQ and chop the link.
Its really good so far, keep it up!
Tim Sanderson 11-07-2004, 10:21 PM Very nice and Thank you. You should get an award for being the most kick butt link maker. Good info.
