View Full Version : I have been grinding 3rd gear
WRXout 11-03-2004, 01:58 AM latley i have been grinding 3rd gear sometimes i wont sometimes i will, its not exactly a grind its more like i dont shift hard enough and i think i let off the cltuch to early then it clinks itself into gear and i can feel a shock from the shifter, but not a horrible grind to where i can hear it, what can cause grinding of gears? all i need to know is this and i can fix my driving ways
psyber_0ptix 11-03-2004, 04:52 PM i changed my fluids and when i took the drain bolts out, there was a LOT of metal deposits...
now with the new fluid, all seems to be smooth. it shifts nicely except in first gear...
if i sit at idle disengaged, then push it into first (even with little effort) it grinds horribly. then under casual driving, it grinds from 3rd -> 4th....
i dunno what the issue is, i used 75-90, i guess i will be looking into the ra gearset :\
WRXout 11-03-2004, 05:10 PM but i got an 05 sti with 2000 miles, mabe lack of tranny fluid? ill have to see..........imma goto the dealership today, i dunno if it grinds it just kinda catches but the shifter doesnt shake horribly or anything, and id ont hear a grind either but i feel kinda metal on metal
DaWorstPlaya 11-03-2004, 05:23 PM WRXOUT:
I hope you were grinding with a "hot" chick ... hehe ... anyways besides the joke, if you are grinding its probably because your synchros in the transmission are going bad or you have 75W-90 gear oil that is too slippery. You can try putting 1 qt. of pennzoil sychromesh mixed with 75W-90 gear oil to prevent further wear and make them last longer. Alot of people have had the grinding go away after adding synchromesh. If they still continue to grind after adding synchromesh your synchros are probably shot and you'll need to replace the synchros in your tranny.
Psyber_optix:
Its your synchros not your gear set. Try the Pennzoil Sychromesh blend....
peace :)
Got Groceries? 11-03-2004, 05:41 PM Listen to DaWorstPlaya, he's right. Several thousand miles on 1qt Synchromesh + Castrol HypoyC, not a single first gear from idle crunch. HOWEVER, if it's an '05, and you take it for warranty work and they suspect Synchromesh (and do an oil analysis) they can void your warranty for not using factory spec oil.
Just noticed you're in an STi...I didn't know this was an issue with the 6MT...
WRXout 11-03-2004, 06:11 PM maybe its driver error im learning on it, it doesnt grind alot at all just i think when im trying to shift to fast or somethingi just dunno what causes a gear to grind so i can fix it, sometimes it slides in perfect sometimes not
Got Groceries? 11-03-2004, 06:50 PM If this is your first manual transmission, learn precision first...speedy shifts will come with time. It's much easier to modify your shifting for performance driving if you've learned proper techinque first. Much harder to unlearn a bad habit. Shifts from second to third gear, when you're moving the gearshifts in two directions (up and over) take just a tad more time and effort compared to a straight 1-2 shift.
Clutch FULLY in before moving the gearshift, gearshift FULLY into next gear before releasing clutch. Repeat. Be careful, I'd hate to hear about your transmission puking it's insides all over the road. :)
gtlegg 11-03-2004, 07:59 PM i got the same problem...ive had it going into 3rd and going into 5th as of lately...is it cause i try to go from 2nd to 5th to quick...i make sure my foot is fully on the cluth too...and sometimes its just so hard to put into gear. this is my first manual car so i dont know if that is normal, but id like to fix the problem, cause the slight grind/knocking noise of the stick annoys me...it rattles like a bitch ...and im not bad at stick ive been driving it for about 3 months now and picked it up pretty quick, but im open to constructive criticism to fix my driving
WRXout 11-04-2004, 01:11 AM gtlegg when i put it into 3rd it feels like half way into the shifter it feels like metal on metal then it slide in smooth, its wierd
gtlegg 11-04-2004, 04:57 PM thats the same way mine feels....it kinda feels as if i was putt the car into reverse where its hard to get into then slides it....i dunno if its normal man...i drive a 02 2.5rs to, dont know if that makes a difference, but lately its weird, it feels like im not shifting right at all, every gear im going into is like a **** shift except for 3-4 heh...i dunno man, i think i need some lessons in driving again....i just dont get it, it was never like this, then again i think some kid owned this car and beat on it, im a kid to but i dont beat on it that bad, only when near a civic all riced out that is slow
Got Groceries? 11-04-2004, 05:12 PM Also, not letting the revs fall off too much while shifting helps. I've noticed that if I try to shift like my old Civic (which had a silky smooth shifter) and let up on the gas too much, the RPMs drop enough to make the synchros work very hard. So I've slightly modified my shifting so that I barely let up on the gas, just enough to almost match throttle position for the next gear so I don't overrev. I'm not saying to keep your foot planted and bounce off the rev limiter or anything, just help to keep the input and output shafts sorta matched in RPMs.
The STi short shifter helps shifter feel, as do the Kartboy bushings (so I've heard) and the Pennzoil Synchromesh, but this (the 5MT anyway) is an old design. On top of that there's a big jump in gear ratios from 1st to second (on the WRX, not sure about the RS), and I always feel like I'm waiting for second to engage.
Got Groceries? 11-04-2004, 07:31 PM Oh, yeah...the Group N engine and transmission mounts help also.
gtlegg 11-04-2004, 08:36 PM i bought the pennzoil synchromesh ill see how that works, and ill try the shifting you do, i tend to let off the gas fully and then when i shift in the car bounces like i dropped the clutch, but then the rpms are good enough to just gas it and at other times ill do that and the rpms will just shoot up and ill still be going the same speed and then it kinda smells like a lit match
WRXout 11-04-2004, 10:08 PM i got it fine i just hit the clutch pedal faster and my vtec kick in an di shift perfect now
psyber_0ptix 11-05-2004, 11:08 AM OT: is there any way to adjust the clutch engagement point?
mine engages if its not ALL THE WAY down. even letting off a hair it starts to grab. its probably fully engaged 1/3 the way up the pedal stroke.
RumblingREX 11-05-2004, 12:14 PM WRXOut, I have an 05 with only 100mi on it and I noticed that exact same thing with 3rd gear. Double clutching, or clutch in waiting for synchros to match, or rev matching.. nothing seems to work. Once in a while I will get a cherry shift, but they are few and far between. I gave up and just shift normally. I plan to have it looked at for the 1000 mi oil change and start a record with Subaru just in case the synchros do go.
psyber_0ptix 11-05-2004, 12:44 PM ALSO, metal shreds are from the gears or synchro?
cause there was a LOT when i pulled the drain plug out. if it gets worse and i have to get the synchro's replace, i htink i will just upgrade to the ra gears anyways for the shorter ratio's.....
needsboost2005 11-07-2004, 07:41 PM As soon as I shift to first gear its getting harder to shift into gear. It also happens when i shift from 4th into 5 gear ( clutch full depressed). It's bein getting noticeable after I warm up the car for 2 minutes and drive slow till its fully warmed up. Even when the temperature is at 62 degrees it still does it. I checked teh transmission fluid and clutch fluid and both are on max levels.
Has any one had this problame. Its a 2005 sti with 8735 miles. It was not doin this till I passed teh 8000 mile mark.
Im taking it to the dealership on wednesday.
WRXout 11-08-2004, 12:17 AM i think its just a subaru thing, cause it doesnt grind it feels like it pushing back at me
