View Full Version : Midpipe quality: Stromung vs. TWE?

Hey all.

I've been window shopping for new 2.25" midpipes for my car, be it through new vendors, used buys, or whatever. I now have my choice down to three:

1. used Stromung
2. new TWE
3. custom job (Meineke, etc.)

#3 was originally my only choice, but since a pre-fab one will be stainless, and not crush-bent, that's the better option.

The Stromung cost is less than the TWE since it's used, but is there a particular quality about the TWE that makes it really worth it? I guess it's "just" a midpipe, so maybe it doesn't make much difference, but...

It's worth asking. :D

Stromung is full SS, while the TWE IIRC is mild steel. As long as both have an ID of 2.25" get the one made with better material.

Edit:

Nevermind, both are SS.

The TWE retails for $120 while the stromung is $150 or so. Which TWE is it, normal or high output?

Remember that the Stromung is used. Its price is lower.

The TWE is the normal output unit.

unless it's damaged a used one is no worse than a new one performance wise.

Do flanges normally have to be welded together, or just bolted?

One guy a while back mentioned that the pipe he had, the flange had to be welded to the cat section. (Stromung I think...)

i have the stromung and all the rest of the exhaust is stock, you really dont notice a power difference but lately i've noticed a noise difference in it. Im still waiting to get an axel back, but I like it and it was a quick easy fit, just make sure your spring bolts are not rusted, if they are get new ones it'll save you a head ache

TWE exhaust are all stainless.

Only the headers are mild steel (thermal coated for protection).

Well I wouldn't imagine that much difference would be noted w/o having a full catback. I'm not sure what the OE pipe diameter is on the new-age RS, but mine's 1 7/8" so a 2.25" is a pretty decent increase.

Maybe I'll just invest in new bolts/gasket/donut so all those parts are replaced.

Piping is the same diameter on a new and old RS.
