I own a 97 subaru legacy gt it has a 2.5L engine it is a wagon and to say the least it is lacking power. I was wondering if there are any swaps that I could do. Also if my stock 5 speed tranny would bolt up to any of these stronger engines. I have also heard that putting 2.2L heads on a 2.5L engine will improve power? I have no idea if this is possible or if it is true any info would be great. Sorry I don't know alot about subarus but I really want to learn.

Thanks
Scott

If you just bought this, or havn't owned it long, reset the ECU.

Disconnect the battery negetive terminal, press and hold the brake pedal for atleast 2 minuets, to discharge the ecu capacitors, and let sit unconnected overnight.

Then hook it back up and drive like you normally drive. The ECU will re-learn and adapt to your driving style.

I was pretty unhappy with my car, power wise, untill I did this. It's still no power house, but it drives more like I want it to.

2.2L heads suck... so that will not help you make more power.

since you are new, I will gently suggest that your read the FAQ's at the top of this forum. ;) And add that Subarus are like Legos. ANY of the engines you read about here can be put into your car. Your tranny will bolt up to ANY of those engines and they will drop right in. But engine swaps are big $$$ operations. Unless you have super deep pockets, I would suggest starting out with the standard bolt ons( see normally aspirated and Legacy forums) to raise the power. If you are still yearning for more once that is done, then decide if you want an engine swap. A swap will cost you $3-6k in parts, plus another $2-3k in labor if you cannot do it yourself...

matt is absolutely right. unless you are looking for more than 250 hp, there is no need to swap that motor. not only, the stock tranny won't like too much power. I just ripped every tooth off of 2nd in my RS, (thank god i had another tranny handy) with just a set of built heads, good for about an extra 40-45hp @ the crank.... now imagine doing a fully boosted motor. BANG!!! crunch crunch crunch...

250 HP out of his motor? Its doable, but not nearly as cheap or reliable as a swap.

Also, his tranny is fine, believe it or not. ;) Driven carefully, it will be fine.

What are these heads you speak of. I have never heard anything like that. 40 hp from a turbo kit, but never from heads. Info please.
