View Full Version : right headlight out, bulb & fuse fine, what next?

The right side headlight low-beam on my 2003 WRX wagon is no longer working --- the right side high beam works fine and both the high and low on the left work fine. I first replaced the bulb only to find that the filament on the original bulb was fine. Next, I checked the fuse --- also fine.

I looked over the headlight system schematic and now am a bit unsure as where to look next. Since the headlight system on the 2003 WRX provides common power to both the high and low beams, if it were a problem with the +12VDC side of the circuit the right side high beams wouldn't operate either (they do). Since the right and left side low-beam grounds are tied near the F44 connector, if the switched ground side were a problem both left and right low-beams would be out (the left side is fine).

I've called the dealer as it is still under warrantee, but they can't fit me in until next week. I'd rather not drive around all weekend with a HL out. Any suggestions?

Have you always used only OEM or equal wattage bulbs? Some aftermarket bulbs can cause the headlight harnesses and connectors to overheat and melt.
Even if you've only used OEM bulbs, take a close look at the connector on that side and make sure the pins aren't damaged.
You're correct about the 12V, if the high beam works it can't be a power issue. It has to be either the bulb itself or a problem with the low beam switched ground on that side.
You're absolutely certain that the replacement bulb you put in was good? Have you tried swapping the known good one from the other side in there just to be sure?

The original OEM bulbs were in place at the time of the failure. The replacement bulb was a Sylvania XtraVision 9007.

I'll do that.

Another thing to try. I'll post the results.

Thanks

I have the 2002 service manual, but if the circuit is the same, both headlights share a common ground path.

Also, as mentioned above, if there were a problem with the +12v supply, the _high_ beam would also be out.

The only thing unique to the low beam that I can see is pin #3 of the "F7" connector right at the headlight. It should have a yellow wire with a red stripe.

Hey, I'm having the same exact problems with my 2001. What exactly was wrong with the connector and how'd you get it fixed? Thanks

Just some general advice...

On any connector like this, especially those that are prone to corrosion, use some dielectric grease on the terrminals before re-assembly.

I've seen this sold as "bulb grease" (to make light bulbs easier to remove when they fail).

I have this problem with the drivers side headlight on my '98 OBS. Did you replace the connector? How were you able to get a good connection?

I have tried manipulating the connector but it always comes loose again.
