gotawd11 06-27-2001, 04:37 AM im in the process of aquiring a jdm sti engine. i wanted to ask al those who have completed this swap what type of parts and changes i will have to make to get this engine in to my rs. all information will be appreciated.
sorry for the yelling before, just wanted to get your attendion. :D
nqwan 06-27-2001, 05:07 AM next time try not using the caps, theres no need to yell at ppl
i dont kno much about the swap but i do kno that most of the trouble is with the wiring harness...
Here we go again...;)
First of all, make sure you have enuf $$$ to go though the swap,
cause there will be lots of thing that u'll def need for the swap...
i mean ALOT!! from all harness to cross member, wiring digram for both current MY and the MY of the STI that going into ur car.
there is no way i can remember all the stuff, but these are the must...
Engine with workable turbo and intercooler
Tranny (gearbox,flywheel,clutch disc and housing)
4 or more WRX Shafts
Wrx rear diff
WRX axle
WRX fuel pump (I have a Supra TT Pump, higher flow for future tunning)
Radiator
correct Ecu and all harness
all vacum hose and piping
WRX cross member
WRX engine coolant reservoir
New timming and engine belt
New spark plugs
STI engine and tranny mounts (option)
Aftermarket brakes and heavy duty brakes line
...and lots of bit and piece and time!

Clutch master cylinder
Doubt the stock STi ECU will work on its own, you will need either a stand alone ECU or some major piggyback parts.
Time
That should be about it. Have you ever done an engine swap before? This is way harder than the Honda swaps. Make sure that you budget about 10-15% in addition to the parts above for the gaskets that will be bad, the hoses that will be missing, bolts, brackets, the normal little things.

scooby5 06-27-2001, 05:45 PM As JeffG mention, make sure you have enough funds and that you make sure what the Engine comes with and its condition.
But you don't need a new clutch master cylinder. You will need a new slave cylinder that fits on the JDM gearbox that will use a pull type clutch, that is, of course, if you swap the gearbox as well.
The swap is by no means easy. If you go all hog, and use JDM parts like the power steering cooling pipe, you'll have some custom pipe welding to do.
I did the engine swap on my car by myself. Took much longer than if some people had been around to help me, but it was doable.
The only problem I had swapping the engine, was self-inflicted!
If you look at the picture, the engine was hoisted facing the wrong way (car's in the background) and I couldn't bring it down easily because I had the new exhaust header installed! Took some fancy footwork to unhook it and spin it around.

jeffg 06-27-2001, 06:17 PM would it be easier to swap the clutch master or the clutch slave to a differnent type? I am curious about this one.
Jeff
scooby5 06-27-2001, 09:51 PM Jeff,
I find it much easier just to swap the slave cylinder that bolts onto the gearbox.
The master cylinder involves going through the firewall.
In any case, as soon as you change the gearbox to a STi type with the pull type clutch, you need to change to the proper slave cylinder.
I've got installation pics of the new slave cylinder with the OE master cylinder if you're interested.
garface 06-28-2001, 02:13 AM I seem to have found the solution to your problem. Push this: http://www.calpoly.edu/~jdoty/capslock.gif
gotawd11 06-28-2001, 02:58 AM hey guys. thanks for teh good info so far. but what types of cars did you guys swap this engine into? will it be easier for a newer car? and the big question is was it worth it?
Maximum 06-28-2001, 04:11 AM Scooby5, what kind of headers did you use?
Scooby5 which car u did for the engine swap??Cause there isn't many Swap WRX in Toronto....especially an STI For what i know..
;)
SL1200MK4 06-28-2001, 07:46 AM KK, and Scooby5... I saw an yellow 2.5 RX with STi engine swap recently. Is that your car or does anyone of you know anything about it?
nikkicalves 06-28-2001, 10:11 AM The name of the place is calle Promax in toronto. I have seen the car, very nice runs beatifully. Everything looks to be in order and I am also looking into this for the future. STi rules and you can't beat the reliability.
Nick.
scooby5 06-28-2001, 11:31 AM KK,
I used a MY99 RS silverthorne as a base to do the swap. I did a complete JDM driveline (engine + gearbox + suspension + brakes) / interior / exterior swap, which takes quite a bit longer than a 'simple' engine swap. The car's been in my garage for a while now, so that would explain why you haven't seen it around Toronto. I've been fitting an Apex-i GT spec front mount intercooler to it, which is almost complete. I have to put the front end back on. You guys are welcome to drop by and peek at it while it's stranded :p
I found it easier to do the complete swap into a newer car since we have winters here, and it'd be a bit more messy to strip an older model that's been in the road salt. Otherwise, I don't think it matters much which MY you start from. Though doing it off a non-RS with a mechanical clutch mechanism (instead of hydraulic) would mean a bit more work. The car's not my daily driver, so I don't mind taking the time to do it right, which means I'm pretty anal about the swap and used JDM components just about everywhere.
Maximum,
The headers on the engine are MRT tuned length exhaust headers. A bit on the pricey side, but the workmanship is impeccable. http://www.mrtrally.com.au/performance/photo/mrt200.jpg
I also put the MRT 3" stainless steel sport exhaust system with SS tip.

This Fall, I plan on doing a front/rear Quaife ATB uprgade, and then I'll see if I have any money left
Maximum 06-28-2001, 12:44 PM Scooby5:
Whoa! You're really going all out. This thing is going to be a monster. We'll have to go cruising sometime!
KK:
I'm using a 1995 brighton, which I think is an appropriate car. It was cheap as hell (1500 USD), and is in pretty good shape all things considered (no accidents, and surprizingly no rust). However, I am doing a complete drivetrain swap, I mean everything. So unless you're going to go that route, an older model might not have the parts you'll need.
The yellow STI belongs to owner of Promax..
I am using a MY99 Rally blue for the swap...Complete JDM Switchover..
Running 1.1 Bar boost at 6200 rpm
0-60 under 5 sec
1/4 mile on street tires 13.04
All those number are record from my Apex Rev speed meter
Here's some of my mods:
WRX verIII engine , tranny and ECU
Supra TT fuel pump
Skyline GTR33 rad
complete custom 3"dwn pipe,custom 3" Apex N1 cat back, with 3" hi-flo cat
Subaru 4 piston brake
Blitz BOV
Blitz Dual SBC ID boost controller (Not installed)
Blitz ID meter Boost and oil pressure
HKS intake
17" P1 with 215/45/17 Dunlop W10
Pic will be here soon
;)
Maximum 06-28-2001, 02:52 PM Nice!
Ver.III 06-28-2001, 10:59 PM Nice , looks like a V3 or 4 . Do yourself the favour and get some header wrap on the up-pipe to the turbo. There is quite alot of heat that comes off that pipe . I have had a few valve cover gasket leaks on the right side of the engine because of the excessive heat.
Make sure your final drives in the front tranny and the rear diff are the same.
Looks like a lightened flywheel too . Cool . I had one buy I went back to the stock. It was a little unstreetable with the chattering and I also felt I lost a little torque in the mid-range.
Good luck.
Maximum 06-28-2001, 11:30 PM Hey Rich, what do you think about headers? Are they worth the money?
Ver.III 06-29-2001, 01:53 AM The headers are good . I love the sound . Just like the WRC cars ......like a Honda !!!
But its not something I would get right away. They are not cheap to buy. It may be something to consider down the road.
gotawd11 06-30-2001, 04:54 PM I was just wondering if you all could help me locate a reliable source for these engines as well, the person I have been talking to has had a little trouble with other buyers and I dont want the saem problems. DO you all know any companies that sell jdm subaru engines? thanks gotawd
Ver.III 07-01-2001, 12:53 PM Try Mike Sheilds from SPD . It may be a little pricey , but I know he is a reliable source for them.
scooby5 07-01-2001, 01:38 PM Ver III. You're right on the money.
The engine is version 4, with the intake port riding under the intake manifold, but the block is a version 3. The first batch of version 4 engines used the last remaining blocks from the previous year.
As for heatwrap, the header up-pipe is being wrapped and painted with some DEI (http://www.designengineering.com/product1.html) wrap and high temp silicone paint.
Front diff / rear diff combo are from the same driveline , as is the EMCD centre diff with the thumbwheel that's hooked up to the instrument panel.
The clutch / flywheel combo is from Possum Bourne (http://www.possumbourne.co.nz/Performanceparts/Subperfomframe.htm) and is a 1500kg Exedy with their own lightened flywheel.
Ver.III 07-02-2001, 03:06 AM Cool . Hope to bump into you on the road one day !! :D
......gravel that is !!
