View Full Version : This is not happening..accident.
Scoober01 06-27-2001, 09:58 AM This is crazy. I was going south and about to make a left turn, I waited till it was clear and started turning. About half way through the intersection a crotch rocket comes speeding over the hill going north. I think, this guy is going to hit me. So I speed up a little through the turn. This guy decides he wants to turn on to the same street as me. I don't know how fast he was going, but he was going fast. So basically we are both turning on to the same two lane street from opposite directions. Because he was going so fast he drifted in to my lane. Now I'm making the turn looking over my sholder at this guy to make sure he's not going to hit me. He cuts into my lane and because of his speed, he forced me to move out of his way or he would have plowed into my left side. My driver side front tire rams the curb and I hop up on the median and the guy speeds off, no chance of catching him. I tryed to get the plate, but thoughs plates are so small by the time I looked up he was too far away. Now for the good part. My rim is dented from the curb, my tire has a rip in the side wall, the under side of my bumper is scrached all to hell, my borla headers hit the curb denting them and breaking 2 of the welds on the pipes and who knows what ells. Now I have to pay a $500 deductible and be without my car for two days. To say the least I am pi$$ed.
I soon will have a set of damaged borla GEN III header for sale and maybe a front bumper.
I just thought I would let everyone know to always be carfull, you really never know when somthing like this will happen. It happens so quick you don't even know.
So please every, drive safely and always watch out for the stupid people.....they out number us.

Keith 06-27-2001, 10:46 AM wow that sux man, I'm sorry to hear that. U should have just hit him, it would have been easier on ur car:)

Scoober01 06-27-2001, 11:00 AM When it was happening I didn't have time to think just to react. After it happen, yeah I was thinking, damn I should have just let the guy hit me. At least then I would have stopped him and he would be paying for the whole deal. But in the heat of the moment the only thing going through my head was PROTECT CAR.
Get this, I called my insurance CO and told them what happened and guess how they are going to handel it. They said, "Okay take you car to a approved shop and get a appraisal." Okay. " Then we will write a check to the shop," not to me to the shop.
I was thinking, I'll clame the headers bumber tires and a wheel,
then take the money and get a front lip spoiler to cover the scraches, new headers a rim and new tires, and maybe have some left over because I'm doing the work myself. But now I need to take it to a dealer. They will fix everything back to normal, and I'm out $500. Pi$$ed is not even going to cover it.
I'm &%*)(%$^&, but its okay, it could have been worse. Somone could have died, like the jack a$$ that ran me off the road. Now that would be bad, very bad.
O-Well, game on.

Charge 06-27-2001, 11:52 AM Did you ask if they would cut the check to you? Sometimes you have to. I got rear-ended Thanksgivin of 1999 in my old S-10. Completely bent up the tailgate door. Needed to be replaced. However, it still worked. Progressive(the at fault's insurance), tried to cut a check to a shop. I just explained that I would be replacing the car eventually, and since the tailgate still functioned, I would rather just have the cash. They agreed.
Sometimes you have to ask to get what you want!

ba_feitl 06-27-2001, 11:54 AM When you say fix back to normal .. is that stock normal or modified normal ??
going back to stock would really suck big time ...
Glad to hear you weren't hurt though !

2Point5RS 06-27-2001, 12:01 PM That sucks dude. who was turning left? the person turning right has the right-away. Since your drivers side is screwed up, it sounds like to me that he was going to run in to your passenger side, so you swerved left... what about oncoming traffic? was this a one way street? Something seems a lil bit weird about this... but maybe i misread something??  anyways, sorry about your luck man.

Lifino 06-27-2001, 12:16 PM Yeah, go out and get the highest appraisals you can find. In my experience(small dent back left 1/4panel on my old civic) I had to go to about six places. I had a range of about 1200 - 1800. I got two estimates both over 1800 and sent those in. Then I asked that they send the check to me, if I remember right I had to ask a few times and get them to explain to me why they wanted to write check to the garage, at which point they decided it was cool to write the check to me... They settled at 1200 and I took it to a guy who I know who did it for 1000... We're all happy now.
Basicaly the big part is shopping around and sending the highest possible appraisal in. After that knowing someone who can do it cheap(IE yourself) is always good.
Oh, bummer it even happened. I hate people who drive like that. I agree w/ Kieth, should let him hit you, then he pays the deductable, but the rearview is always 20/20(adjusted for spherical distortions)
good luck.

Scoober01 06-27-2001, 12:22 PM ba_feitl.... I mean back to the way it was. I'm getting new Borla headers, this was the only mod that was hurt. I still have the stock bumper, wheels and tires. Though I'm going for some p5000's.
Charge..... I'm going to ask, thank you for the advice. If I could get a check to me that would make this alot easyer on me and my checkbook.
2Point5RS....you are correct the other person was turning right and had the right-of-way. This intersection is located at the top of a hill. I stared turning and he came speeding up the other side only to run in to me at the top. I don't think either of use could see eachother till it was too late. He could have gone strait and avoided the whole thing, but he desided to turn, right in to me. I was already over half way through the intersection by the time I saw him. He was going very fast and its already a blind intersection. If he wasn't going as fast as he was I would have had plenty of time to get though the intersection before he even reached the turn. So I don't think right-of-way applys here.

2Point5RS 06-27-2001, 01:06 PM Damn dude... I wouldn't have rather taken my chances with the motorcycle than the oncoming traffic... But then again...I don't know if the thinking part would interupt the subcontious reaction. Good luck with your insurance company.

Jon [in CT] 06-27-2001, 06:36 PM Scoober01, that's a novel legal theory you're arguing:
"Your honor, because the oncoming car appeared to be exceeding the speed limit, I was therefore not obliged to yield the right-of-way to him when making a left turn."
mr_disco 06-27-2001, 07:00 PM It's not a novel legal argument. You're allowed to break the rules of the road to avoid accidents. For example, if someone is coming head onto you on a two way street with solid lines, you can go into the other lane to avoid him.
Scooby do 06-27-2001, 07:16 PM To bad about the car at least you didn't get hurt. You made the right desicsion, hit the curb, even if you don't think it is your fault. Cars are replaceable, hurting someone because you could have avoided them is not cool.

SAL-23 06-27-2001, 07:57 PM Man that sucks that some ppl are so careless, but it was right of you to avoid a possible accident with such reckless drivers. Just think about it you probably saved his life by making that move, and if you didn't you might have had to live with the fact that a person died from an accident that involved you in it. A car is not worth more than a life no matter how much of an ass the other driver is. Just my feelings.
strap 1 06-27-2001, 08:00 PM how do you think I feel, when my car was a week old I was at my womens house and it was parked in her driveway and a big delivery truck backed right in to it and put a dent in the front right fender, broke my bumper and headlight. I was so pissed I wish he would of hit the hood too and I would of put a carbon fiber hood on, so I know how it feels to have someone hurt my baby.

Scoober01 06-27-2001, 10:23 PM Okay small update,
Jon [in CT]....I'm sorry I don't mean to be rude, but did you read my post.

SAL-23......I think I made the best choice in the time given.
It was either let him hit me or hit the curb. I decided to take the curb, maybe hoping he would stop to see what happened.
I talked to my insurance CO and was able to talk them into cutting me a check for the headers..... and mid-pipe and exhaust. :D
The rest is being fixed at the dealer and they are billing my insurance CO, thats just the way my insurance CO is.
I'm getting a new full set of Dunlop SP Sport 5000's through them too.(because you can't replace just one with 10,000 miles on the others, and RE92's just suck).
So I'm happy, I still wish it had never happened but I get a nice set of new tires, a new rim, a new header and a new bumper with no chips or scraches.

Blindeye_03 06-28-2001, 01:56 AM I usually get alot of people trying to side-swipe me ALL THE TIME... I either slam the gas and lay onthe horn OR hit the brakes and lay on the horn....depends on how fast I am going..
But I have had to swerve into other lanes to avoid being hit by morons...
The track is soooooo much safer! :D

Rick G 06-28-2001, 04:51 PM I'm glad you didn't let him slam in to you, because he WAS on a MOTORCYCLE and could have lost his leg or at least broke it real bad.
Sorry about your car!:(
