View Full Version : aftermarket exhaust for my 05 STI - help me decide
nkkilla 11-07-2004, 10:59 PM I'm going to get a cat-back exhaust for my 05 STI soon.. probably one of either TXS, Invidia, Blitz nur spec, scoobysport, espelir, or HkS. Then I decided I want the angled look and some level of loudness (100+ decibels). That narrows my choices down to HKS and Invidia..
can anyone help me decide between the two? or can anyone think of any other cat-back exhaust that I might like?
thanks in advance :)
kool168 11-07-2004, 11:15 PM invidia full TI catback!!!!
deep tone and only 10 lbs...
Nytmare 11-07-2004, 11:17 PM I think my HKS is McDonald's...
'Cuz I'm lovin' it. :)
w00t yeah I love my Hi-Power catback...and I'm sure it's even gonna be louder once I get my downpipe!
That's my .02!
nkkilla 11-07-2004, 11:22 PM does anyone know if Invidia's catback is quieter/louder than HkS catback? and is HkS hi-power the same overall design and functionality as the carbon-TI? (does that 200-300 dollar difference come only from the appearance upgrade?) thanks
boostjunkiestimt 11-07-2004, 11:28 PM txs!
antidote11 11-07-2004, 11:54 PM COBB Turbo Back
RandomDj 11-07-2004, 11:58 PM if u want the 'angled' look... the txs is nice and loud
nkkilla 11-08-2004, 12:24 AM hmm.. for some reason I've been thinking TXS exhaust was straight, not angled..
nkkilla 11-08-2004, 12:39 AM didn't TXS RFL exhaust have problem with burning the bumper due to its short tip and proximity to the bumper? Has that issue been fixed? btw.. now my choices are between TXS, HKS, and Invidia. all feedbacks are welcome :)
nkkilla 11-08-2004, 03:45 AM yea TXS's new model fixed the problem.. but doesn't TXS offer a catback system? not that it makes much difference anyway.. but I'd rather have a catback than just the axleback, and I don't plan on having the wastegate ported yet so I definitely can't get a turboback..
BANG4BOOST 11-08-2004, 04:00 AM the hks hiper is the same design exactly as the carbon ti
AK_2002_WRX 11-08-2004, 05:11 AM tanabe super racing medalion is pretty loud....angled also...here it is on my old car...

nkkilla 11-08-2004, 05:58 AM yea i remember my friend had a wrx with a tannabe SRM.. I've finalized my decision and it'll be between tannabe SRM and HKS hi-power catback. How are the fitment to the 05 STI stock downpipe? Are there any known problems? (other than HKS hangs too low) will I need kartboy hangers for either of them?
xtian67 11-08-2004, 06:09 AM INVIDIA looks and sounds awesome!
nkkilla 11-08-2004, 06:33 AM I took out Invidia cuz I couldn't find any comparative information for Invidia exhaust when compared to other exhausts..
X4 SRT 11-08-2004, 06:50 AM APS all the way. It's by far the best looking and sounding I've seen so far.
Subaru_Impreza 11-08-2004, 06:56 AM hks hi power...i love mine
nkkilla 11-08-2004, 07:58 AM where did APS come from  newayz.. my friend just mentioned a JIC exhaust.. anyone has any info on those?
Strictly Driven 11-08-2004, 08:55 AM didn't TXS RFL exhaust have problem with burning the bumper due to its short tip and proximity to the bumper? Has that issue been fixed? btw.. now my choices are between TXS, HKS, and Invidia. all feedbacks are welcome :)
You can pick up some Kartboy Longer Exhaust hangers to fix that problem. If you want a loud exhaust, between Invidia and HKS, I would say go for the Invidia. You want a nice deep boxer rumbler.... HKS.
As for the exhaust, I myself will probably go with the HKS Carbon Ti catback.

RandomDj 11-08-2004, 10:00 AM there are a bunch of people on here that have the TXS i'll have them chime in... both the TXS and the JIC Bullet have the big canister angled look... if you want to blow that 100 db (completely get you pulled over) mark then a downpipe is inevitable. :D
Uncle Scotty 11-08-2004, 11:07 AM Well....I hear a bunch of loud rice can suggestions......how about a Stromung or Scoobysport.....you will NEVER have anybody mistake you for a hunduha with one of these ;)
SupersayianNeo 11-08-2004, 12:15 PM You want loud get the TurboXs TBE....and you'll get your wish.....
And power that you'll notice....
iorikun 11-08-2004, 12:20 PM Loud fart cans = Rice.
It's like a BOV. With the stock turbo, it won't buy you much. Except unwanted attention.
BongMonster 11-08-2004, 12:35 PM I went w/ the Espelir JGT500 (cat back). I love it. Nice deep sound, throaty.

Chuck H 11-08-2004, 02:26 PM Then I decided I want the angled look and some level of loudness (100+ decibels).
Do you have any idea how loud 100+ dBa is? That's loud to the point where you're probably going to suffer hearing damage from driving it around all day. Most race tracks that require some sort of mufflers on race cars have a 95 dBa limit. And those cars are still pretty darn loud. 101 dBa is 4 times louder than that. You're going to be in the same territory as Harley's running straight pipes.
s2ktosti 11-08-2004, 02:45 PM Can someone explain the Fartpipe phenom? For the life of me I could never understand why you'd want something that A. Sounds rediculous and B. Looks worse.
Every time I see someone driving down the road I laugh my ass off. You might as well wave a giant yellow flag saying I'm young, come pull me over Mr. Policeman. Spend on some good performance items, keep it low and throaty... that's the way to go.
RandomDj 11-08-2004, 03:13 PM Well....I hear a bunch of loud rice can suggestions......how about a Stromung or Scoobysport.....you will NEVER have anybody mistake you for a hunduha with one of these ;)
i agree... but i made a suggestion on what this person wanted to do... if it was my setup... well thats another story for another time... when i get the money to do it :D
Rallycarperson 11-08-2004, 03:41 PM Yeah, I gotta agree with Scotty. Remember, just because something is loud, doesnt mean it sounds good. Personally, Im not a fan of fartcans. For those people who like loud exhausts without the fartcan look, try looking in the new Perrin Single tip.

nkkilla 11-08-2004, 04:42 PM okok I don't want something that's fartcan loud but something that's low-rumble loud.. hope this clears up.. and yes I know how loud 100 db is.. HKS turboxs tannabe blitz are all rated at over 100 db @ 3000rpm (from that chart I was looking at) I'm currently also thinking about JIC w/o resonator.. but first.. I need 600 more miles for break-in :(
RandomDj 11-08-2004, 04:53 PM try looking in the exhaust section and see what u think fits ur criteria... 600 more miles huh... breaking warranty that early
subiekid 11-08-2004, 04:54 PM Scooby Sport is nice but a tad expensive. Stromung/Cobb is great as well.
kubes 11-08-2004, 04:56 PM turboxs, awesome sound and look
WRX8XB 11-08-2004, 05:03 PM i just threw on my JIC spartan DE-2 on my MY05 STi sounds sweet, by no means as loud as you want, but then again im throwing a QTEC on to fix that...100+ dB at the flip of a switch!!
Catback voids warranty? that is one anal dealer...

Chuck H 11-08-2004, 07:25 PM I'm as much into performance as the next person, but can someone enlighten me on the appeal of exhaust that loud? It's not like it makes the car any faster. All it does is attract every cop in the state, and tick off every homeowner in town as you drive around at night waking everyone up with your stupidly loud exhaust. And then of course, you'll need a 1000W stereo blasting at full volume so that you can still hear it over the exhaust, which means annoying everyone else around even that much more.
Worxman02 11-08-2004, 08:14 PM I also don't understand the fartcan phenomena especially on subies. I'd think that people who would drive a rex would have better asthetics than a pep-boys exhaust (not saying that hks or invidia is crappy, just that they don't look so good imo). I'd go with the Borla catback, not the hushpower since you want loudness. I heard it on a WRX a couple weeks ago and its sick. So low and rumbly. It basiclly takes the stock sound (what you hear if you put your ear close to the exhaust tip) and enhances it and makes it louder. Definetly music to any fan of the boxer engine.
SINthetic 11-08-2004, 08:22 PM Another vote for the QTEC. Quiet when you want and hell loud in 5 secs!
AndrewSS 11-08-2004, 10:53 PM stromung or prodrive are good!
scoobysoon 11-08-2004, 11:20 PM I've got a STI-Upipe, B&B exhaust down pipe with race cat, Bola hush cat-back and the thing sounds incredible. Very low rumble, definately turns heads and can wake neighbors up if you rev it too high on your way back home.
SilverSurfer04STi 11-08-2004, 11:35 PM I've got a Cobb system. Sounds good: low, deep & more audible boxer rumble without being a ton louder than stock. Exactly what I was looking for.
Silverevo8owner 11-09-2004, 12:12 AM If it's loud you're looking for, get Blitz. Trust me, I have it. And I'm about to sell it because the neighbors complain. It's not ricey, and it sounds good. It's just simply a deep, loud exhaust. The quality it very good too, and it comes with a silencer you can put in and take out, which instantly reduces the volume to near stock, but has a nice rasp under WOT.
skoobywrx 11-09-2004, 12:34 AM I vote Stromung. Nice rumble at idle and a good tone at wot.
very good quality welds!

IrishSti 11-09-2004, 12:57 AM I went with TXS and absolutly love it. Not to loud at low RPM's so if im passing by a cop or something I just let off the gas a little bit and im fine, I have passed by MANY cops and not been pulled over, but once I get on the highway and let it rip then the sound is awsome (as long as I got the radar on of course). It's a really deep rumble which is the sound that I always had dreampt about before I even got my subaru, good luck with it!

vandysti 11-09-2004, 02:36 AM Went and got the alphawerks catback that came with the downpipe already built in...3.5 inch pipes with a 4.5 inch exhaust tip...as soon as install will post the sound clips...
scooby24 11-09-2004, 09:41 AM Invidia is the shlt. Looks bada$$ and believe me when I say that it's loud. It sounds sick as hell. I've heard HKS and TXS on STi's and they get a little bit of raspiness. The invidia is just clean, loud and deep.
import111 11-28-2004, 03:55 AM How about power gain wise? What is the best catback for power gain? I know every1 is gonna say get a turboback. I do not want to deal w/ boost creep or CEL's. Most catbacks I see advertise 5-20 hp gain. I doubt any catback will give 20 hp on a stock STI, but what would be the best catback exhaust for hp gain on an 04-05 STI?
Ryan
4EVO2NV 11-28-2004, 05:20 AM My espelir is 104db at 3500 rpm no load. Thats loud. Catless.
WRX8XB 11-28-2004, 12:10 PM but what would be the best catback exhaust for hp gain on an 04-05 STI?
Ryan
when it comes to catbacks the hp isn't that great, sound and volume (loudness) should be the main considerations simply b/c the power numbers are nominal and not very consistent.
But if you guys feel 4whp from your catback that's cool, i just wouldn't buy and exhaust that is loud as hell and makes 2 more hp
Drew (of course this is all personal opinion)
good luck
FiKtIOn 11-28-2004, 06:07 PM COBB Turbo Back
Cobb's exhaust is neither angled nor loud
antidote11 11-28-2004, 10:31 PM I don't recall saying that it was either ??????
I think COBB Stage 2 is the way to go !!
No CEL Issues or anything like that. Just power !! :D
sti-la 11-28-2004, 11:32 PM Just installed APS 3" tbe on my 04 STI and i love it. Nice deep growl to it. Not too loud.. Add the cat pipe if you want to reduce the noise a little more.. 1 vote fo APS. Plus great build quality.
Chuckie 01-05-2005, 02:33 AM what about the NEW HKS Silent Hi Power exhaust. Looks the same but is now full stainless and not as loud, with the same rumble :D

Md05STI 01-05-2005, 05:22 PM I have a JIC 505 Titanium catback with a Helix downpipe on my 05 STI. Nice deep sound and is about as loud as a HKS catback. A little pricey though.
Genya 01-06-2005, 01:46 AM Vote for tanabe here.
Focus4 01-06-2005, 02:14 AM i have a hks carb-ti and i love it. Its loud but its really not as loud as people say it is, even catless...
AK_2002_WRX 01-06-2005, 02:36 AM what tanabe are you usin Genya?
Hye-Teck 01-06-2005, 04:25 AM i have an APS and it nice a quiet when at idle but comes alive when you step on it.
had a close one today with a cop. He was writing someone a ticket and i was at about 3.5k rpm when passing him and he stopped was he was doing and just starred me down about 20 yards away.
14.5 drift 01-06-2005, 10:16 AM rnrracing sells a 3 inch alluminized mandrel bent turbo back for 600
AK_2002_WRX 01-09-2005, 04:51 AM just installed my tanabe racing super medalion from my old WRX....it is twice as loud compared to the old car:devil:
should i reset the ECU or just leave it?
Genya 01-10-2005, 03:04 AM Im using the Super Racing Medallion atm. Im in love with the sound. However I have a wrx 2.75 system instead of the new 3" sti version. May change at some point.
