View Full Version : Aftermarket Exhaust sound. Ex-Audi owners help me out here.
Scooby-Doode 11-07-2004, 11:05 PM I just bought a 2005 STi
I want to get a cat back, for now at least. One thing though. I don't particularly care for all the burbly type exhausts that are available for the scooby's. Don't get me wrong, I like that sound, its just not for me. What I am looking for is something that sounds more close to a UUC Velocimax 1/2/3 on the Audi S4. I love that exhaust, its a shame UUC doesn't make an exhaust for Subaru's. Any advice or would you suggest I go custom??
Thanks
powerslide23 11-07-2004, 11:21 PM You have a scooby get used to the 4 cylinder boxer sound.
awilson529 11-07-2004, 11:22 PM The "burbully" tone that are apperant to scoobies is the layout of the engine. Your best bet is to get some headers to stop the "burbullyness". Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Evil STI 11-07-2004, 11:44 PM I traded my 2001 Audi S4 in for my STi. The burble is a characteristic of the boxer four. Nothing you can really do to eliminate it, short of messing with the headers. If you dislike the raspiness found in some aftermarket systems, a good starting point would be to select a system that has a large resonator(< key ingredient) and muffler canister. Also, you get what you pay for, so don't skimp on quality.

after you got a catback, your car must be LOUD! and the boxer engine tone is NICE!
if you dun like that deep boxer engine tone, get a header.. your car will sounds like a civic
Groove1797 11-08-2004, 02:07 AM Have fun with that! your going to have to get used to it. I have a 03' 1.8t as my daily and sti's are very loud compared to the a4. the best course of action that is listed above is a large resonator. Secondly a set of "Equal legnth" headers with eliminate the boxer sound.

lol.. I know its a boxer. I just thought that most after market vendors use additional baffles in the muffler to add to the burbly sound.
Thanks for all the replies guys. Headers is something I am already looking into.

get some better header too... otherwise it will crack
Bumsarama 11-08-2004, 09:50 PM If I was you, I would purchase the Borla Hush exhaust for your STi. Rave reviews, about as close to OEM sound level as you can get without having an annoying loud exhaust while getting the same performance as the louder (see: ricer ) exhausts. Just dont expect much of a performance gain (if any) out of a cat-back exhaust, turbo-back is the only way to go for real power gains. :D

Try a remus universal muffler and a set of equal lenght headers.
finnRex 11-08-2004, 10:37 PM If you want a quiet cat-back, check out the Greddy Evo or Evo II. Very quiet. Also, to get rid of that boxer 4 rumble, check out the equal length headers like everyone else is sayin'.

CBRDSpeedfactory 11-09-2004, 01:16 AM cracks me up, i came from the audi deal also...actually my car should be in the latest issue of european car mag...s4 with rs4 widebody and k-16 turbos...
anyway...im still deciding on an exhaust also... I am going to try to get a borla sti exhaust but with the center resonator from the hush kit.... I will probably end up adding a high-flow cat to my downpipe, and possibly just run the normal borla sti exhaust.
I dont want it too loud either...I had the AWE Twin2 exhaust on my s4 with no cats, and its sounded great... not too loud.... my buddies wrx with headers and borla cat back with helix downpipe is loud and raspy...
our new header looks like it solves the raspy sound, smooths it out a bit, while maintaining the nice boxer porsche sound...it won't be released for awhile yet though. I also have a water/air intercooler we are finishing right now, that we will be testing on two cars. I wanted to avoid the front mount look and plumbing...all the more along the lines of a euro type setup. The sidemounts were nice in the s4...
anyway...i think everyone has a different opinion...

Chad I think I've preached your car here more than any where else. That wide body is SICK!!!, I've seen it at waterfest :D
My baby has seen more of the garage than the road :(, I've had it for 2 weeks and I only got to put 300 miles on it. WORK SUCKS!!!
The AWE twin and new borla for the B5-S4, both sound sweet, it also happens to be the type of sound I am looking for. I got time yet, I am in no rush to mod. I'll start looking at headers/exhaust combo's in the spring. Only thing I can suggest is you make some good quality video clips and tune in that mean exhaust sound.
Kingpin 11-09-2004, 02:53 PM Yep. Greddy EVO or EVO2. EVO2 is all SS and has one less silencer. Both are smooth sounding. Cant even hear them on the highway but at WOT you can hear some sound and its good sound. No Booming sounds at all. Very happy with this system and I have had 3 different systems on the car.

Ahh yes. I knew this would come out at some point. The whole "WELCOME NOOB" thing.  Get over it. I did hear all exhaust clips on that thread, and yes I think its pretty damn obivious its a sticky for a reason. Just because the title says noob and or my post count is at the kn00b level doesn't mean I am one :o :o . I've been on Nasioc much longer than Nov 2002. But thanks for the warm welcome and the initiation, I feel like I am part of the family. Now, let me comment on every thead possible so I can get my post count up. :p
PS... I prefer the Stromung.

ADR 04STi 11-09-2004, 07:08 PM Scooby-Doode : You must check out the Borla "STi" cat back. . .It has the XR-1 muffler! Single 4" tip. . not two tips. It sounds awesome. . I get alot of comps. Never droning or raspy. Deep bass. ..real low from our 2.5 powerplant. Not loud. . .not quiet as their "hush". Just perfect. Your STi will sound agressive when you get on it. . but will purr for daily or long trips.Youll be able to hear the legendary BOXER sound now. . stock just too quiet for me. You know the quality is there and 1,000,000 mile warranty.
Took me all last winter to decide . . .and couldnt be happier. This is my preference. .nothing against any other brand/types.

mr.zero 11-11-2004, 10:55 AM I have a pde dp with cat with a greddy sp2 exhaust, I personally thinks this is the best sounding combo on a sti. the exhaust note is really throaty but not loud. I get many compliments on how my sti sounds.
Mr.zero
CBRDSpeedfactory 11-11-2004, 11:24 AM does anyone have a sound clip of the borla sti with a downpipe?
If you guys care, my s4/rs4 is in the current issue of european car magazine...i have yet to see it, i wasn't there when they took the pics.
