I was just wondering if anyone was going to be attending the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb this weekend?.

I was there last year and it was awesome! I've been to Rally Australia at least 8 times, but in many ways I found Pikes Peak to be much better spectator wise... 1000hp cars on twisty dirt roads with 1000ft drops... Big rig trucks hanging the back wheels off the edge... rally cars, bikes, stock cars... mountain views...

The best part is you can see each car for maybe 3 minutes as it climbs, and it's still a bit of a secret so there's not too many spectators about... Go if you can!!

There is a bunch of Subaru guys from Colorado that are going and Me and supersube are going from Nebraska as well. Check the 2 threads in the Rocky Mountian forum.

Hey, go root for the Subaru in the High Performance Showroom Stock class! Geoff Maguire is an Australian (who lives in Texas) running an RS with an STi RA drivetrain prepared by CTC Motorsports. He's also running on DMS 50mm Giant Struts. I believe Geoff has been qualifying second behind Rhys Millen.

Colorado Springs, Colo., June 28 — Ralph Chandler Bruning Jr., son of the late great hillclimb champion, was killed Thursday morning during qualifying for the 2001 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Bruning's 1999 Chevy Monte Carlo, which had been his father’s car, left the circuit in a right-hand corner just three-eighths of a mile after starting a qualifying pass at 6:50 a.m. local time. Witnesses say the car went airborne and was impaled on a tree.

According to reports, event chief steward Bill Walters confirmed that Bruning had died from injuries suffered in the crash. Teller County Coroner Debbie Smith indicated that the 31-year-old apparently died of a broken neck and chest injuries after a tree entered the driver's compartment through a side window. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Bruning's father, the late Ralph Bruning Sr., won the Super Stock category at Pikes Peak eight times between '73 and '92. Bruning retired from driving following the '98 race as the category's winningest driver and succumbed to pancreatic cancer last year at the age of 54.

According to race officials, this was the third fatality in the 79-year history of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, but the first in which a driver succumbed immediately, prior to being transported to a hospital. Today's qualifying was suspended immediately following the accident, but race officials say qualifying will resume tomorrow, with the race to be run as scheduled on Sunday, at the request of the Bruning family.

Race spokesman Tim Bergsten said, "It is as if we've all lost a close family member today. Our prayers and sympathies go out to the Bruning family."
