View Full Version : which turbo kit?
suby ej25 06-27-2001, 11:57 PM sorry if this was covered...but i tried a search but it ended up having like a billion results.....i was just wondering from your experiences....which turbo kit for the my01 rs provided the most hp gain at the best price?...and how did the kit affect daily drivability?...i just want to get an idea of things before i go saving up all this money...and i figured that this would be the best place to get the info...thanks alot:D
suby ej25 06-28-2001, 12:47 PM i'm not really sure...i was going to save up so i could get all the work done at once.....i would build one my self but i don't know enough about what is necessary to build a safe, reliable turbo that won't fry my engine......if you guys could help me out on this i might consider trying my own set up..thanks
jdchmiel 06-28-2001, 01:26 PM I have a stage1 ludespeed kit on my '00
I dont know if anyone makes a kit that fits prefect, as everyone sems to have troubles. I am not trying to badmouth ludespeed, I got a it with good components at a good price, and some thought went into the design of it. If I had known it was going to take lke 8 months to get the kit, and it was not going to fit perfect, I would have made my own kit.
If you dont feel you can make your own kit, then no matter what kit you get, I would not suggest you install it yourself. A lot of cutting and rewelding is needed to make things fit.
Lygriek 06-28-2001, 02:56 PM I have been considering putting together a Turbo setup myself, and have been wondering...
other than the electronics, how much can be borrowed from the Subaru parts bin? What hardware will fit or can be easily modified to attached to the EJ25?
Up-pipe?
Down-pipe?
Turbo?
Intercooler?
Those are the real main pieces of the puzzle, right? Everything else should be easy to get or make, RRFPR, Fuel pump, Spark Plugs, Blow off valve, hoses, air filter, oil supply/return, brackets, guages, and possibly TECII or some other engine managment system.
Anybody have any information?
Thanks,
Michael (Lygriek)

EddyRS 06-28-2001, 08:19 PM If anyone is planning building their own turbo kit, and do not know much about turbos. My suggestion to you is to start by reading these 2 books first:
1. Maximum Boost - by Corkey Bell
2. Turbochargers - by Hugh MacInnes
By doing this, at-least you will have the basics you will need to start turbocharging your ride. Well worth the reading.
As for bolt on Subaru parts.......I think it would be easier if you had up/down pipes made to fit the stock headers, as with the WRX/Legacy Turbo setup, you will need to change the Exhaust manifold, as well as the oil-pump, and cross-member, just for starters. Also the "stock" turbo items will not be properly matched to the 2.5L displacement. I'd say, Find a GOOD welder, one who does really well work, and that is not so expensive, then buy the parts needed for the kit and create your own kit. Heck if it is good enough, you may even be able to sell it like these other people have. (Ludespeed, ASR, JC Sports, Minnum, and such)
Part of the fun is in the creation/designing. At least then you know EVERYTHING about your turbo kit.

LVSUBARU 06-28-2001, 11:20 PM What about the JC Sports kit??? I'm saving up for one now, and would like to know if it's worth it. I've heard nothing but good things about it. Easy install???? I've heard it's good.........
suby ej25 06-29-2001, 01:39 AM eddy
do you think that barnes and noble might have those two books?....and if i read those two books.....i'll be fairly prepared to start trying to come up with my own kit?....or atleast be a better judge of the kits tat are now availabe?

Wannabeturbo 06-29-2001, 12:32 PM Hey you save big money doing it yourself! Shop around the various turbo sights and also ebay. I figured it out last night and everything came to $2,017. That price is all the major stuff. I still have the hoses, and tees to buy but that is it. I got alot of pictures and ideas to run pipes and to go about it. Just look around save pics and get ideas. That is what I did and I just bought stuff when I had money and put it together when I have time. Trust me it keeps you from stressing less when you know exactly what you have to do next and also lets you prepare yourself for the next step and then you can assemble it alot quicker and not have an extended downtime w/out your ride.
But if you have money to blow go ahead and buy a 4-6k kit. That is cool too! But I have better places to spend my cash (girlfriend aka money pit!!!!)j/k
Good luck!

Jon Bogert 06-29-2001, 12:43 PM So what would a "turbo installation kit" be worth to you?
-Up pipe and down pipe to fit standard Garrett/Turbonetics turbos and Deltagate compatible wastegate, with flex joint but no cat
-Intake pipe that will fit a K&N cone filter
-Oil feed and drain hoses
-Pipe from compressor to throttle body
-hoses, fittings and clamps to make the connections.
You supply all the commonly available parts, some of which are avialable used, like:
-turbo
-deltagate
-voltage clamp or zener diode.
-fuel pump
-rrfpr or S-AFC
-K&N filter
Naturally you better know what you're doing to install this yourself, since you might have to trim hoses and do some customization. Or, you can take the components to a competant mechanic. What do you think?
EddyRS 06-29-2001, 01:04 PM Yea, I picked up both books there. I had to order Maximum Boost, but it only took 5 days to get, and I payed like $27.18 for it (you get a discount if you pre-pay when ordering).
I agree that it would be cheaper, but more work to build your own turbo kit. That looks like the route I may go....unless Minnum (or at least the company that was minnum) provides a kit for a reasonable price. I'm waiting on a responce.
See Ya
Off to work
Cheers

STiTuner 06-29-2001, 02:33 PM Damn you guys. I would say building your own kit can be a very bad thing... atleast in terms of expense. I bought a Garrett T3/4 turbo and a tial wastegate (that all have remanufactured by HKS) spent like 1 K on that.. I got Up-pipes and down pipes with it. but the quality of the pipes were real ****ty.. I mean real ****ty!!!!!!!!!!. So now I'm paying a local race shop to make me brand new pipes (mandrel bent this time) and have my car tuned by professionals. if you get a premade kit you're getting something that has had a bit of R&D done, true nothing will ever fit perfectly but atleast you got a head start and maybe the things that will have to be corrected will only be mior instead of the **** I'm going through.
Brad
